— Wine and Food Experts Make is Premier Event a Special Occasion:
We Welcome Laura Pensiero, Wendy Crispell, Josyane Colwell and Ty the Wine Guy —
— Renowned Wine Blogger Bill Dowd is Our Cordial Emcee for the Event —
(HUDSON VALLEY, March 25, 2011)—On Friday, May 20, 2011, 5:00-8:00 pm (Opening Night Gala)
and Saturday, May 21, 2011, 1:00-6:00 pm, the Hudson Valley plays host to the winemakers and artists that
continue the traditions that made this region famous. The beauty of the wineries and the lushness of the
Lyndhurst estate serve as background to this special weekend celebration of wine, art, food and culture.
We are pleased and honored to have with us some of the Hudson Valley’s treasured resources who are
reviving the area’s art and artistry of the grape. They are:
Bill Dowd, our gracious emcee for the event, is the publisher and editor of the "Dowd's Guides" portfolio of
online sites covering food, drink and destinations. Bill is the New York State wine columnist for
Examiner.com, writes a column called "Dowd On Drinks" for the Times Union, and is a competition judge
in the fields of food, wine and spirits. His book, Barrels & Drams: The History of Whisk(e)y, will be
published this fall (Sterling Publishing, NY). He points out that his “…family lineage connects him to the
great whiskey-making sites of the world – Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and Pennsylvania (where some relatives were
known for the quality of their moonshine).” In fact, he is a descendant of Rhodri Molwynog, King of
Gwynned, Wales (born in A.D. 690) who was known for having alcoholic drinks available for his fighting
men. The colorful and always interesting Mr. Dowd is sure to enchant us with tales of the grape and take us
on a magical journey!
At Gigi Hudson Valley, Laura Pensiero provides a bountiful Hudson Valley roadmap to delicious and
healthful eating – Mediterranean-style. A graduate of the French Culinary Institute (and recipient of its
Outstanding Alumni award), her mantra is to “help people eat healthily and above all, happily.” Her book,
Hudson Valley Mediterranean: The Gigi Good Food Cookbook (HarperCollins 2009) was among Food & Wine’s
Top 25 Cookbooks of the Year and bestowed an Honorable Mention for Best Food Books by Publisher’s Weekly.
Even Oprah chose Chef Laura’s “Hudson Valley Club Sandwich” as one of her “top ten favorite recipes of
the decade.”
Chef Laura will introduce us to her market and catering business, Gigi Hudson Valley, and then explain the
role of food in creating A Sense of Place, especially the full sensory experience found in the Hudson Valley.
She opens Friday evening’s festivities at 5:30 pm with a “Toast on the Veranda” of the Lyndhurst mansion.
For this special event, she will be creating a distinctive dish that will be paired with a sparkling Hudson
Valley wine and served to all on the veranda – a warm welcome for a congenial celebration!
Wendy Crispell, Certified Specialist of Wine, believes that “Wine is the unique expression of both nature and
the creative force behind it….” Working for Kevin Zraly at his Windows on the World Wine School to a
winning appearance on the Food Network and on to first place awards in international cocktail
competitions, her background is rich in all things culinary. She founded Wendy Crispell Wine to share her
enthusiasm for wine, cheese, spirits and food pairing, and is widely known for her Regions of the World
workshops aboard the vintage motor yacht Manhattan in the NYC harbor.
In her presentation on Friday at 7:00 pm, The Artistry of Wine, she will explain how the vintners, as artists,
choose their medium to craft a liquid narrative, the perfect example of dedication to their craft. Using scents
and textures she will teach us how to enhance our tasting experience and to heighten our senses of smell,
taste and touch to fully appreciate the artistry of each glass of wine.
The Provençal-born founder and executive chef of Le Moulin Event Planning & Catering, Josyane Colwell,
offers worldly sensibilities about food, presentation and ambiance. She creates seasonal organic menus,
combined for a perfect balance of ingredients that complement each other both to the eye and to the palate.
Clients such as Vera Wang and Victoria's Secret have enjoyed her French delectables. Her knowledge of wine
is equally on a par with her food sensibilities. On both days of the Celebration, guests will enjoy Chef Josy’s
singular dedication to food. Her epicurean expertise along with her stylish signature will leave a tasty and
tasteful impression on this event.
Michael “Ty, the Wine Guy” Taiani is "changing the wine experience one glass at a time." A food and wine
consultant and columnist, he is the founder of Wines By The Glass, offering his Hudson Valley clients and
wine club members unforgettable food and wine experiences. From a sales position at a reputable NYC wine
shop, Ty learned and trained from the best in the industry, becoming a wine consultant with a loyal
following, including celebrities. In 2005 he founded Wines By The Glass, and now his own wine classes are
always sellouts – they’re fun and informative for both novices and aficionados alike.
Our presenter on Saturday, Ty will do two presentations – 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm. In Get Experienced, an
interactive workshop featuring select Hudson Valley wines, he will teach us the basic guidelines for successful
food and wine pairings that can be created at home or enjoyed out-on-the-town. His other much anticipated
presentation will glorify the pairing of the correct wine with the ever-popular tastings of…popcorn.
