SUBJECT ART MEDIA CLAY YEAR 8 DURATION TERM 3

TOPIC TITLE USEFUL ART THEME CERAMICS ARTIST(S) JEREMY RANDALL

RON KORCZYNSKI
OVERVIEW Pupils will further explore the tactile qualities of clay. They will review and build upon the hand-building techniques of slab work pinch
pots and coiling. They will develop an understanding for Art that can be used and create several sculptures that can be used as everyday
objects.

 Roll out a slab.
 Trace around the rectangular template.
 Apply texture and then cut out the slab.
 Soften the rim and bevel the edges for
joining. Ensure there is an overlap of about
2cms.
 Score, slip, join and compress so that a
stable cylinder is constructed.
 Upturn the cylinder and score and slip the
base.
 Create a triangle from the round base. Try
to keep the side even by watching the
triangular shaped hole that forms.
 Pinch the walls together to join the edges.
 Use a latten ball of clay to fill in the hole.
 Wrap the bag in plastic and expose the feet.
This will allow the feet to harden a little
before pushing out the shape of the pot.
 Clean up while waiting.
 Push out the walls of the pot from the
inside. Use gentle pressure with 2 fingers.
Keep checking from above to ensure the pot
is even.
 Fire, Glaze, Fire, Evaluate. What new
techniques have been learnt? What was the
success rate?

  FOCUSED PRACTICAL TASK – Advance Pinch Pot 

Teapot.
making-techniques/handbuilding-
techniques/basic-doesnt-have-to-mean-
boring-pretty-organic-forms-from-
simple-and-complex-pinch-pots/
 Review how to make a pinch pot.
 Ask students to join together 2 pinch pots to
create the shape.
 Seal carefully into a plastic bag for later use.
 Discuss how this shape could form the body of
a teapot. Look at a range of different and
unusual teapots.
 Students design a teapot based on the shape of
their ‘egg’.
 Students now use their ‘egg’ to build the rest of
the teapot.
 Create a base, cut a slab strip and with the ‘egg’
resting on an empty plastic cup, attach the
base. Add decorative elements according to the
design.
 For the lid, cut a round opening in the top of
the ‘egg’ and set it aside.
 In order to have the lid fit only one way, make a
small notch in the opening.
 Place paper towel around the edge of the
opening as a separator.
 Construct by placing a small ball of clay in the
notch, add a coil of soft clay to fit into the lid
opening so it slightly overlaps the opening.
 Attached the notch clay piece to the coil.
 Flip the lid over and add a ball of clay to the
underside of the lid to add some weight and
balance to the lid to help hold it in place when
tilting the teapot to pour tea.
 Cut a hole for the spout to attach around.

  To form the spout, flatten a cone of clay and 

form a spout around a brush handle.
 Trim the spout and attach it along with the
decorative elements to the teapot.
 Create the handle, by creating two “dog bone”
shapes and flatten them, leaving some
thickness at each end for joining.
 Assemble the handle and add the decorative
elements from the design.
 Add a handle to the lid following the same
style.
 Fire.
 Glaze.
 Fire.
 Evaluate. Does it work?
