‘We Are One’ in the Legacy of Dr. King (TriceEdneyWire.com)
Barbara Arnwine - As the nation marks the
43rd anniversary of Rev. Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, which occurred as a
result of his intervention and support of the Memphis Sanitation
Workers Strike, it is important for the American public to
remember the historic and continuing role of protecting and
maintaining workers’ rights as part of civil rights progress. We
all can continue learning from Dr. King’s leadership and
teachings. As he stated on March 18, 1968, in the midst of a
strike of 1,200 Black sanitation workers, “all labor has dignity.”
In contrast to Dr. King’s ideals, recent efforts by Wisconsin
Gov. Scott Walker and governors in other states to eliminate the
gains obtained by public sector workers will have devastating
consequences for racial minorities and civil rights progress. At
the core of the civil and human rights movement is economic
equality which is based upon civil rights enforcement and
strong protections for working Americans.
Indeed, the impact upon state and local government job
cuts would be particularly devastating to minorities, including
women, as they account for a substantial segment of unionized
public employment. Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows
that 14.5 percent of all public sector workers in the nation
are Black, and a total of 1.9 million African Americans are
members of labor unions, with African-American men and
women making up 14.8 percent and 12.2 percent of labor
unions, respectively.
Black men and women union members have significantly
higher incomes than non-union workers, which is greatly
attributed to union protections provided through collective
bargaining. Access to union membership is an effective
way to address measures to improve economic security for
minority workers and collective bargaining reduces the chance
of persistent poverty facing many in the African-American
community.

Law stood with leaders across the country to protect the same
Who is Qualified for Public Service in the Nation’s Capital?

Mary Cheh convened a
hearing to examine a former mayoral candidate’s allegations,
which some describe as an “HR nightmare” for the new
administration of Washington, D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray.
I am familiar with some of these issues as I served as the
chief of staff in the agency, the Department of Health Care
Finance (DHCF), where the primary subject of the hearing was
ultimately hired. However, I was just as caught-off-guard as
any by the charges leveled by the former mayoral contender
(whose campaign antics arguably took more votes from Gray
than Fenty).
Yet, I welcome the opportunity to discuss my involvement
with the mayor’s election, my qualifications to serve in District
government, and the events that led to my recent departure
from local public service. I also look forward to addressing a
related and more central matter—the issue of who is qualified
to serve in District government.
As customary in the start of new District administrations,
the local press conducted a routine examination of the mayor’s
cabinet selections. However, finding no issues of note with
the mayor’s seasoned crop of top bureaucrats, some began a
rather tabloid-like scrutiny of lower-level appointees, down to
the mayor’s special assistants. And out of the dozens of such
lower-level mayoral selections, a small handful netted info
sufficient to equate to “political dirt.” The result was a plethora
of distracting media reports including one entitled “Should
Criminals and Scumbags Get D.C. Jobs.”
Regrettably, I became the subject of such examination.
The Invisible Institution
In the season of slavery,
Rev. Jamal Bryant historians defined the Black
church as the “invisible
institution.” The name was given because Blacks assembled
to worship under a shroud of secrecy because such gatherings
were outlawed by those who had the mind to know if a slave
had a filled spirit, it would be a matter of time before he/
she came into a sense of self. To clear their conscience of
reducing African Americans to three-fifths of a human being,
our enslavers had to claim we didn’t have a soul. But, the
unquenchable passion of our fore parents to feel close to God
sparked an innovative flame that produced sanctuaries in
swamps, chapels in cotton fields and temples under trees far
beyond earshot of their oppressors.
In the 21st century, in spite of African-American churches
now having seating capacities that rival stadiums, television air
time in as much rotation as “Law and Order” reruns, campuses
bigger than historically Black colleges and pastors having more
impact than local politicians, it’s a complete mystery (with all
that visibility) why we are an invisible institution…AGAIN.
The Black church has, by and large, become an invisible
institution with acute laryngitis in the conversation regarding
gay rights, same-sex marriages/unions, and the HIV crisis that
has engulfed our communities. While we seem to vote on
the liberal side of the political aisle, the Black church would
make the tea party blush with our overt conservatism around
sexuality. The elephant in the room is making us look like
“Cirque du Soleil” as we juggle around our discomfort, which
fosters an environment for “down low” behavior from the choir
loft, the deacon board and even from the pulpit. Homosexuals
have always been a part of our ministries.
April 9, 2011 - April 15, 2011, The Afro-American
human rights and human dignity of working men and women
for which Dr. King gave his life on this day 43 years ago.
We showed politicians and their allies that “We Are One” in
the fight to protect the rights of working families and we will
not be silenced. Nationwide, civil and human rights activists,
union members and supporters, African Americans, Latinos,
Asians, immigrants, religious supporters, students, women’s
groups, and many others will contact their elected officials and
hold community vigils, teach-ins, public rallies and workplace
gatherings to demonstrate that workers’ rights are human rights
that affect everyone, and that we will not let these rights be
destroyed.
While we appreciate the need to address the critical
shortfalls in state budgets, let us give serious consideration to
the civil rights implications of current actions in Wisconsin and
other states. The fight for workers’ rights is part of the larger
struggle to achieve racial and gender equity in the workforce.
These principles should not be summarily dismissed as
simply a consequence of budget shortfalls. In fact, a failure to
adequately address these disparities undoubtedly will contribute
to the continued shrinkage of the middle class. For African
Americans, the numbers are particularly striking. According to

report, 45 percent of those African Americans born into the
middle class, were living in the bottom income level as adults.
We should not forget that the existence of a strong middle
class has helped spawn economic growth in this country and is
important in the continued struggle for civil rights.
Furthermore, one of the most significant barriers to the

seek employment opportunities in the District government.)
Notwithstanding the exaggerations in some media accounts
of my case, I admit and take responsibility for the claims as
summarized above.
Nonetheless, the question before Councilmember Cheh is
whether the “issues” raised about my personal history, which
had no bearing on my work in the District’s Medicaid agency,
are nonetheless sufficient to disqualify me—a lawyer with a
track record of providing counsel on health and other policy
matters to members of Congress, the D.C. Council, and the
mayor—from appointed public service in the District. And if
the answer to the above question is yes, then this begs the next
question—exactly who is qualified?
Well, let’s do the math. According to 2009 statistics from
the D.C. court system, over 62,000 civil cases were filed
involving parties with student loan and other contractual
defaults, including landlord-tenant matters. In the same year,
over 13,000 cases were opened in D.C. courts for those with
various marital and other intrafamily disputes. And another 400
or so people in 2009 faced local court legal proceedings for tax
delinquencies. Based upon these figures, there is the possibility
that as many as 75,000 people with bad credit or bad personal
relationships in the District could be disqualified from any level
of appointment in D.C. government, despite their professional
credentials or work performance.
Who else can we add into the bag…how about “criminals?”
The Black church can no longer afford to be invisible
on these issues when same-sex unions and/or marriage, in
a growing number of states, quite possibly will not just be
administered at the courthouse, and when it’s our members
who are seeking the applications. We can’t afford to be
invisible when R&B artist Nikki Minaj encourages our teenage
daughters to explore the benefits of being bisexual, when
“don’t ask don’t tell” has just been told to be quiet or when
HIV has become the millennium’s bubonic plague.
Self-identified gays, lesbians, bisexual and transgendered
people are here. They are not just the stereotypical hairstylists,
choir directors and somebody else’s children. They are our
children! If we claim that Jesus died for everyone, are they not
included in that number?....YES, they are!
Now, as a third-generation preacher of the nation’s oldest
Black denomination the African Methodist Episcopal Church
and former national youth director of the NAACP, I have both
the Black church and civil rights tradition coursing through
my veins. And, as such, I have a bone of contention with the
gay community: Their false correlation between the gay rights
struggle and the civil rights movement. Since the church has
become invisible, no one seems to see this is historically and
philosophically out of order and context. While homosexuals
have been persecuted, they’ve never had to ride on the back of
the bus, drink from separate water fountains, receive subpar
education, be sold like animals or hung for looking somebody
in the eye. Furthermore, African Americans aren’t granted the
option of coming out of the closet; when we come out the door
the march towards social justice begins.
Still, we can’t remain invisible on this issue. While our
doctrine, theology and faith preclude us from embracing these

progress of racial minorities is educational equity. Hence, the
proposed cuts in Wisconsin and other states, especially those
to teachers, who are a part of public sector labor unions, would
exacerbate the already formidable fight for equal educational
opportunities for all children. Our least appreciated leaders,
teachers and others serving in the public sector should not
shoulder the sole blame, nor
the majority of the burden of
the economic crisis much of
this country faces. This is about
ensuring that our children are
taught by the best teachers, that
our safety is in the hands of the
best workers and that we are
selecting from a well-qualified
pool of candidates to serve in the public sector.
In these times of fiscal difficulties, all Americans should
follow Dr. King’s example in prioritizing and supporting the
critical rights of all workers to demand a fair and equitable
workplace.

The mayor reminded us that the District has thousands of men
and women, of all races, who have returned home after paying
their debts to society for convictions of criminal offenses.
Yet for our statistical survey, let’s simply use the number of
criminal cases prosecuted in local District courts in 2009—over
25,000. That now brings the potential number of “disqualified”
Washingtonians to more than 100,000, over 20 percent of the
District’s adult population.
And if one were to further disqualify those with similar
run-ins with the court system over even a five-year period, that
would bring your potentially disqualified number to 500,000,
which statistically could disqualify all of the working-age
adults in the nation’s capital from seeking appointed posts in
District government.
Thus, the question for us as a society is: Where do we draw
the line?
Are we saying that if you stumble—regardless of what
you do to turn your life around; even if you (like me) earn
mechanical engineering and law degrees, manage to secure
positions of responsibility in both the private sector and the
federal government, and actively contribute to civic life in the
District—your “checkered” background will preclude you from
appointed government service in D.C.?
If this is the answer, then the District is committing gross
public waste by denying itself the full value of its greatest
asset—human capital.

With our complexed and painful history, one would think we
would operate at a greater level of compassion, but in large
measure we have become the new oppressors. When Jesus
healed in the New Testament, it was because he was moved
with compassion. In order for us to heal the divide, we must
move with compassion!
Compassion is not the same as affirming. Fundamentally,
we disagree whether acts within the LGBT lifestyles constitute
sin or whether lifestyles are a choice, etc., but we can’t disagree
with the value of somebody’s life. If we preach homophobia
we have stopped preaching hope for compassion! Resolutely
across denominational lines we have to agree that Jesus loves
sinners but died to do away with sin. So, regardless of the
fact that we believe acts within these lifestyles involve sin, the
church must love as Jesus loved!
As a mega pastor that had a major moral failure that led
to divorce, I know what grace looks like, and I’m sure it’s
available. The 8,000 persons that come to my church weekly,
the 4,000 that view online and the 40,000 who follow me on
social networking hate what I did but, through grace, love who
I am. They love me because of their compassion. Hypocrisy
would be for me or any other pastor or church to deny others
compassion because we believe they sin. After all, I thought
that was what the church was—a place to help people find the
love of God!
Let the Church say, “Amen....”

Poet Brings Home $2,000 in Poetry Slam Contest

More than 300 people lined the walls
of U Street’s Liv nightclub recently to see
participants compete for $2,000 in Graffiti
DC’s first-ever poetry slam contest.
The group, a brainchild of Benny Blaq
and Benny Blaq Entertainment, consists of

and Pages, with many more poets across the
Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia
region.

this many people,” Law said, as he watched
patrons line up at 7 p.m. for the 8 p.m. event.

Woman of Faith Celebrates 100th Birthday
On April 23, Fannie M. Goldston, a member of Tenth Street Baptist Church since 1946,
will celebrate her 100th birthday at the Navy Yard Conference Center, in Washington, D.C.,
surrounded by family, friends and church family.
Born April 20, 1911, in Liberty, N.C., Goldston, in 1945, moved to D.C., where she
enrolled in Madame CJ Walker Beauty College and won several awards for outstanding
hairstyles. She and her sister-in-law co-owned Gales and Goldston Beauty Salon for many
years. She retired in 1981 from the salon, located at 2300 Rhode Island Ave. N.E. She still
has one customer, her daughter Elrtia James.
Goldston joined Tenth Street Baptist under the leadership of Rev. Dr. J L Henry. She is
actively involved in her church, where she serves as church mother and a faithful member of
Adult Sunday School Class No. 1. She has also participated in the Outreach Ministry service
at the Washington Home on Upton Street, N.W. every third Sunday for more than 30 years.
