Solid state equipment has operational characteristics differing from those of electromechanical
equipment. Safety Guidelines for the Application, Installation and Maintenance of Solid State Controls
(publication SGI-1.1 available from your local Rockwell Automation sales office or online at
http://literature.rockwellautomation.com) describes some important differences between solid state
equipment and hard-wired electromechanical devices. Because of this difference, and also because of
the wide variety of uses for solid state equipment, all persons responsible for applying this equipment
must satisfy themselves that each intended application of this equipment is acceptable.
In no event will Rockwell Automation, Inc. be responsible or liable for indirect or consequential damages
resulting from the use or application of this equipment.
The examples and diagrams in this manual are included solely for illustrative purposes. Because of the
many variables and requirements associated with any particular installation, Rockwell Automation, Inc.
cannot assume responsibility or liability for actual use based on the examples and diagrams.
No patent liability is assumed by Rockwell Automation, Inc. with respect to use of information, circuits,
equipment, or software described in this manual.
Reproduction of the contents of this manual, in whole or in part, without written permission of Rockwell
Automation, Inc., is prohibited.
Throughout this manual, when necessary, we use notes to make you aware of safety considerations.
WARNING
Identifies information about practices or circumstances that can cause an
explosion in a hazardous environment, which may lead to personal injury or
death, property damage, or economic loss.
IMPORTANT
Identifies information that is critical for successful application and
understanding of the product.
ATTENTION Identifies information about practices or circumstances that can lead to personal
injury or death, property damage, or economic loss. Attentions help you to
identify a hazard, avoid a hazard and recognize the consequences.
SHOCK HAZARD
Labels may be located on or inside the equipment, for example, a drive or motor,
to alert people that dangerous voltage may be present.
BURN HAZARD
Labels may be located on or inside the equipment, for example, a drive or motor,
to alert people that surfaces may be at dangerous temperatures.
When you connect or disconnect the removable terminal block (RTB) with
field-side power applied, an electrical arc can occur. This could cause an
explosion in hazardous location installations. Be sure that power is removed or
the area is nonhazardous before proceeding.
European Zone 2 Certification (The following applies when the product bears the
EX or EEX marking.)
This equipment is intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres as defined by
European Union Directive 94/9/EC and has been found to comply with the Essential Health
and Safety Requirements relating to the design and construction of Category 3 equipment
intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, given in Annex II to this Directive.
Compliance with the Essential Health and Safety Requirements has been assured by
compliance with EN 60079-15 and EN 60079-0.
Module Components
You received these components with your order:
• 1756-IF8H module
• Removable terminal block (RTB) door label
If you did not receive these components, contact your Rockwell Automation
sales office.
This module mounts in a ControlLogix chassis and uses a separately-ordered
removable terminal block (RTB) or a 1492 interface module (IFM) to connect
all field-side wiring.
This module uses one of these RTBs:
• 1756-TBCH 36-position cage clamp RTB
• 1756-TBS6H 36-position spring clamp RTB
Use an extended-depth cover (catalog number 1756-TBE) for applications
with heavy gauge wiring or requiring additional routing space.
When using an IFM, consult the documentation that came with it to connect
all wiring. This module supports these IFM catalog numbers:
• 1492-ACABLE-UD (current)
• 1492-ACABLE-UC (voltage)
• 1492-AIFM8-3
ATTENTION To comply with the CE Low Voltage Directive (LVD), I/O must be powered from
a source compliant with the following:
Safety Extra Low Voltage (SELV) or Protected Extra Low Voltage (PELV) limited
to 200VA.
ATTENTION The ControlLogix system has been agency certified by using only the
ControlLogix RTBs (catalog numbers 1756-TBCH, 1756-TBNH, 1756-TBSH and
1756-TBS6H). Any application that requires agency certification of the
ControlLogix system by using other wiring termination methods may require
application-specific approval by the certifying agency.
Power Requirements
This module receives power from the 1756 chassis power supply and requires
these two sources of power from the backplane:
• 300 mA at 5.1V DC
• 135 mA at 24V DC
ATTENTION The module is designed to support removal and insertion under power (RIUP).
However, when you remove or insert an RTB with field-side power applied,
unintended machine motion or loss of process control can occur. Exercise
extreme caution when using this feature.
1. Align the circuit board with the top and bottom chassis guides.

2. To key the RTB/IFM, insert the wedge-shaped tab with the rounded
edge first and push the tab until it stops.

WARNING If you connect or disconnect wiring while the field-side power is on, an
electrical arc can occur. This could cause an explosion in hazardous location
installations. Be sure that power is removed or the area is nonhazardous
before proceeding.
Wire the RTB with a 3.2 mm (1/8 in.) maximum screwdriver before installing
it onto the module. Shielded cable is required when using this module. We
recommend using Belden 8761 cable to wire the RTB. The RTB terminations
can accommodate 2.5…0.25 mm2 (14…22 AWG) shielded wire.
Connect the Grounded End of the Cable
1. Ground the drain wire.
A. Remove a length B. Pull the foil shield C. Twist the foil shield D. Attach a ground lug
of cable jacket and bare the drain and drain wire and apply heat
from the wire from the together to form a shrink tubing to the
connecting cable. insulated wire. single strand. exit area.

IMPORTANT We recommend grounding the drain wire at the field-side. If you cannot
ground at the field-side, ground at an earth ground on the chassis as shown.
