After carefully researching the surrounding area and the target user group ‘youth from 12 to 20 years’ we came to the conclusion that the differences
were bigger than the similarities. The first concept rule was formed: Instead of trying to meet the surrounding neighbourhood we would create conflict
with these buildings.
After this finding we searched for a way the youth used to distinguish itself. We found that most subcultures are based on music genres. It could be said
that youth uses music to distinguish itself from almost anything. This music is what we translated to sound, the source of any music. Which in turn be-
came our concept: a sound diagram:

This diagram was turned into a de-

sign grid for the building. As far
as possible from the surrounding
houses we placed our source point or
‘sound emitter’ this would be used

as the party hall. Out of this sound

bowl lines where drawn. Those lines
all reflected of the side borders once,
like sound would bounce of a wall.
Secondary to this we arranged all the
rooms on ‘sound production levels’
this way we arranged the rooms in
the building grid. 3D construction view of the final design

Reflection
Although it was my first real architecture and
design project, I believe the concept worked
out pretty well. We managed to find a link
in both the users and the surrounding neigh-
bourhood.
This was transformed in to a nice concept.
This is also where the cracks started to show,
although the analyses and the concept are
Interior materialisation alright, we did not know how to translate
the whole concept to good architecture. In
many cases we took a too direct way of trans-
forming concept (diagrams) into architectural
design.
Looking back on the final product I can see
that the interior could have been designed
better. Also the concept is mainly used in the
floor plan it is not adequately added through-
out the design. A more consistent design
would have been made if the concept was
used as a foundation for all levels of design
like sections, facade cuts, and detail sections
Exterior materialisation and not only for the floor plans.

Overview of the building

Using a game like Jenga gave us the ideal build-

ing blocks for creating the building. We used an
intensive series of composition research to find
the right composition for the building.
We choose to cut the blocks open and create
a wide view in the following way: each block
would be carved open on two sides, one long
and one short side. By placing the glass faced
somewhat back and by painting the side frames
white, a clear difference from the inside, and
the outside (carved open) was shown, as if a
tree was cut open. Materialisation, steel plating to mimic tree skin

Reflection
The dynamics of the team was the greatest
advantage for this project.
The analysis showed an clear goal we wanted
to achieve. Also the Jenga concept was eas-
ily formed. Finding the right composition was
however harder. There was no real ‘why’ cre-
ated, so any composition could be as wrong
as it was good. No parameters where given or
created.
The process as a whole was fairly linear, as
such we did not allocate more time for broad-
er research in many subjects.
The level of detail in which the project was
drawn was however very high. Although
this project was the first to introduce me to
the link between urbanism, architecture and
building technology, the focus remained on
the building technology and the link between
building technology and architecture.

Reflection
The pre-master track has been a solid test for
my skills. It took me long days to complete
the project but I’ve learned a lot.
In the first period of the project I have strug-
gled long to come up with the right concept
for my project. I was not familiar with the
research by design method used on the TU
therefore it took me a while to gain the right

concept. After finally finding the right con-

too fast. By trying to win back my lost time I
forgot to use the just formed concept as the
right layer to build my design on.
The second half of the semester however I

This semester has taught me great amounts
of knowledge and skill compared to other

had the opportunity to learn what I did, but

most of all that I did like architecture on a real
level as much as I always thought I would. By
continuing my study on the TU and abroad
5 on an exchange university I hope to gain a lot
more skill and knowledge on Architecture.
