FREQUENCY RESPONSE OF COMMON GATE AMPLIFIER

AIM:

Design a CG Amplifier using Tanner Tool and analyze it’s frequency response.

OBJECTIVE:

To obtain the frequency response of a CG Amplifier and understand how it

works.

PROBLEM STATEMENT:

1. After Simulation, if Common Gate Amplifier is not working there will be

some fault in circuit then correct that and again simulate and check.
2. If output is not correct, then check the commands, models files which we
are included.
3. Plot the frequency response of the Common Gate amplifier and find the
output of amplifier in a frequency range.

THEORY

Common-Gate NMOS Amplifier

This configuration is used less often than the common source or source follower.
It is useful in, for example, CMOS RF receivers, especially when operating near
the frequency limitations of the FETs; it is desirable because of the ease
of impedance matching and potentially has lower noise. Gray and Meyer provide
a general reference for this circuit. Although the MOS transistor is most famous
for its use in digital circuits, it can also be used as an amplifying device. Common
Gate amplifier simply means the input and output terminals share the “Gate” of
the amplifying transistor. One possible circuit implementation of a common-Gate
amplifier is shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1.

We use graphical analysis to understand the frequency operation of the

common-gate amplifier. In Figure 2 (a) Small signal model of the circuit is given
which is used when

the circuit is operating on low frequency and at high frequency we have to

consider the hybrid –pi model which is shown in the figure 2(b)

Figure 2(b)

We show typical NMOS transistor characteristics. On the horizontal axis we plot

Vds which is equal to the output voltage Vout. On the vertical axis we plot the DC
drain current Id and vary the DC input bias voltage as a parameter. The MOS
transistor is a square law device with a drain current that depends quadratically
on the gate-source voltage in the constant-current region.

Plot a graph of the voltage gain or the output voltage with respect to the
frequency and see the result. Basically the frequency response shown in the
figure shows that the as we increase the frequency the effect of capacitance
comes in the picture and the gain or the output voltage changes. At High
frequency we have to consider the hybrid –pi model for the analysis for the
Amplifier.

SELF ASSESMENT QUESTION:

1) Design and analysis of Common Gate amplifier with diode connected and
attach its output.
2) Build Common Gate amplifier with PMOS current load and attach its
