Hymn of Praise
About Today’s Hymn of Praise…..
Alfred Ackley (1887-1960) In 1933 Ackley composed
He Lives to emphacally answer a young Jewish
man’s queson, “Why should I worship a dead
Jew?” According to hymnal editor George Sanville,
Ackley replied, “But Jesus lives! He lives! I tell you.
He is not dead but lives here and now. Jesus Christ
is more alive today than ever before. I can prove it
by my own experience, as well as by the tesmony
of countless thousands.” Later Ackley was also
inspired to write a sermon, tled, “He Lives!”
Alfred Ackley’s talent to compose sacred music is
recognized by acclaimed musicologists. Scholars say
HYMN OF PRAISE
Ackley showed musical promise at a young age. He
studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London
and played piano and cello, and developed the
gi of composing. In addion, Ackley worked with
Evangelist Billy Sunday and the Rodeheaver Music
Company and was awarded an honorary Doctor
of Sacred Music degree by John Brown University,
later graduang from the Westminister Theological
Seminary in Maryland and ordained a Presbyterian
minister.

Early on the first day of the week, while it
was sll dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb
and saw that the stone had been removed from the
entrance. 2 So she came running to Simon Peter and
the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said,
“They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we
don’t know where they have put him!”

So Peter and the other disciple started for the
tomb. 4 Both were running, but the other disciple
outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 He bent
over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there
but did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter, who was
behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw
the strips of linen lying there, 7 as well as the burial
cloth that had been around Jesus’ head. The cloth
was folded up by itself, separate from the linen.

Finally the other disciple, who had reached the
tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed.

They ran, neck and neck. The other disciple got
to the tomb first, outrunning Peter. 5Stooping to look
in, he saw the pieces of linen cloth lying there, but he
didn't go in. 6Simon Peter arrived aer him, entered
the tomb, observed the linen cloths lying there, 7and
the kerchief used to cover his head not lying with
the linen cloths but separate, neatly folded by itself.

SHARING WHO WE ARE
SHARING NEW LIFE

Are the followers of Jesus Christ an “other worldly” group? No, and yes! If, by “other worldly” we
mean being off in some dream world, the answer is definitely “No!” As Jesus and his disciples
went about their ministry, we know that they confronted issues of life and death, illness and
loss. They faced the hoslity of the entrenched establishment. On the other hand, if, by “other
worldly” we mean having a vision of a beer, more open, more just world, then, the answer is
“Yes!”

The message of Easter is not denial that the crucifixion happened; it is, rather, an assurance that
there is a hope that takes us beyond sorrow and loss. Life and the goodness and premise of life

can be restored. When a person who has had a serious injury or gone through a long me of
illness finally comes back to healthy living again, life seems all the more precious. Resurrecon
people are recovery people. We have known life’s problems, but we have discovered that with
God’s help, we can move beyond them.

As we share who we are, this is a valuable truth to remember. When we talk with others, it is
important to be whole people, human beings who have suffered and rejoiced, plodded and
danced, mourned and shouted for joy. We have discovered that there is a resurrecng spirit
that lis us up, when we have known the depths of despair. There is a God who heals and
restores.

Today, we celebrate the sharing of new life, recovered life, life that has a touch of the eternal.
We may not walk along the road to Emmaus as the disciples did, but along the roads that we
do walk today, we may experience God’s presence in a special, inmate way. Then, we share
our experience with others that they, too, may find recovery and new hope. Other worldly?
Yes, Easter calls us to something beyond this present existence, this present life. Jesus lives and
walks among us. Ahead lies a far beer world, as God’s gi.

McKenzie serves as
the 117th-elected and
consecrated bishop of
the African Methodist
Episcopal Church.
Her historic elecon
in the year 2000
represents the first
me in the over 200-
year history of the
A.M.E. Church, in which a woman had obtained
the level of Episcopal office. Later in 2004, she
again made history by becoming the first woman
to become the Titular Head of the denominaon,
as the president of the Council of Bishops. She
served her one year term that made her the
highest-ranking woman in the predominately
Black Methodist denominaons. Bishop McKenzie
is honored to serve as the presiding prelate of the
13th Episcopal District which includes the State of
Tennessee and Commonwealth of Kentucky. Her
husband, Stan McKenzie serves as the Supervisor
of Missions.
Bishop McKenzie launched an innovave
agenda in the 13th Episcopal District designed
to “Rebuild lives, Churches and Communies”,
through several new ministries. The Nehemiah
Naon, a men’s service ministry; Living Well
Everyday, a health and wholeness emphasis;
A.M.E. Works Day, community service projects;
School of the Prophets, enrichment and

educaonal training; as well as developing good
spiritual habits and a non-profit arm, Believe, Inc.
bringing a fresh wind to fan the embers of faith to
build posively on the past, lay a foundaon for
the future, and work diligently in the present.
She had previously served in 2000-2004 as
the chief pastor of the 18th Episcopal District in
Southeast Africa, which is comprised of Lesotho,
Swaziland, Botswana and Mozambique. Bishop
McKenzie instuted an ambious agenda
while serving there called “Strength to Climb”.
This included strengthening the District’s infra-
structure, by instung computer labs in two
AME high schools; creang seven entrepreneurial

business projects; 37 new church starts; facilitang
two USA-African teacher workshops and summits
and producing four new classrooms. The program
also gave school supplies for AME schools and
scholarships for clergy and high school students.
She completed nine buildings, purchased four
parcels of land, built eight new mission houses,
and built twelve new church buildings. She opened
a not-for-profit computer center in Lesotho, three
District offices/centers, iniated the AME Schools
Annual Conferences in Lesotho and Swaziland,
and provided scholarships for 31 students. She
also expanded services to 75 children orphaned
or affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic in a daycare
program in Botswana.
Bishop McKenzie has served as a pastor of three
congregaons from the rural to the urban center,
from seven members to over 1,700 members.
Most recently, prior to becoming a bishop, she

served for ten years as the pastor of historic Payne
Memorial AME Church in Balmore, Maryland
growing that congregaon from 330 to over 1,700
members, increasing the property value from 1.6
to 5.6 million dollars, launching 25 new innovave
ministries and instung and organizing Payne
Memorial Outreach, Inc, a million dollar faith
based non-profit organizaon. In addion, she led
the Payne Memorial congregaon to peon for
and secure a $1.5 million welfare-to-work contract
with the State of Maryland, the only congregaon
to bid and win. More than 600 men and women
were educated, trained and placed in jobs, leaving
Dayton, Ohio. Bishop McKenzie has been
honored for her community service, outstanding
achievements and being a religious role model by
a number of diverse civic, educaonal, business
and governmental leaders. In addion, she is the
Naonal Chaplain for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
Inc., an internaonal public service organizaon,
and life member of the NAACP; and has received
honorary doctorates degrees from Howard
University, Wilberforce University, Morgan State
University, Central State University, and Goucher
College and later in 2008 Wake Forest University.
Bishop McKenzie is the wife of Stan McKenzie,

Bishop McKenzie is the author of four District. Together, they have three children.
books. The first two, Not without a Struggle
and Strength in the Struggle concern leadership
and professional growth for women. Journey to
the Well helps women seek new direcons for
personal growth and transformaon following
the footsteps of the biblical Samaritan woman.
Both the hard and paperback edions of this
book have made several best sellers lists including
Essence Magazine’s “Best Seller List” for non-
ficon publicaons. Her latest book is Swapping
Housewives. It is the story of Rachel and Jacob and
Leah. The ancient biblical story has 21st century
implicaons for married and unmarried love.
Bishop McKenzie is a graduate of the
University of Maryland, College Park; holds a
Master of Divinity from Howard University School
of Divinity and has earned a Doctor of Ministry
degree from United Theological Seminary in

group. We have established a reputaon for
excellence as we are impacng many lives through
our educaonal workshops and formal presentaon.

• If you are like most people, you probably didn’t
wake up one morning and say, "Gee, I’d love to spend
every minute of my life dedicated to the needs of
another person.” Instead, you may be an accidental
caregiver. An accidental caregiver can be a relave,
friend from church, or even a neighbor. They come
to the aid of someone who needs help with errands,
meal preparaon, or light housekeeping. Their
responsibilies grow over me, and while they didn’t
plan to become a caregiver, they became one. For
individuals who currently find themselves living as an
accidental caregiver, Amani Trinity United Community
Health Corporaon has a series of caregiver workshops
that are held monthly covering a number of topics
specifically related to caregiving. For addional

provide assistance to the congregaon and visitors
of Trinity United Church of Christ who have medical
challenges in entering and exing the Church. For
