Impact on ad revenues
The world cup win of India is expected to have a positive impact on the ad rates for the
cricket crazy nation. IPL viewership, ticket sales and ad revenue have exceeded all the
Industry media expectations. With increase in advertisement rates (25-20%YoY) and increased
number of matches for this season of IPL, the total ad revenue is estimated to generate
Rs9bn ad revenue (~8% to the total TV ad revenue in CY11).
4
IPL 4
The viewership is expected to increase with renewed interest in cricket after the world cup
win. Moreover all the matches in prime-time TV slots make it more appealing to the viewers.
The average viewership is expected to be 5 (TRP) in this IPL season. From the past trend it is
clearly visible that with every season IPL has been gaining strength in terms of viewership,
advertisers, sponsors, ad rates and organizers.
IPL 4 is expected to have approx 15,714 ten-second TV advertisement slots for 74 matches.
Initial ad spot rate was Rs0-.55mn/10 sec slot. However our recent media check suggests that
the current ad spot rate for IPL is prevailing around Rs0.7mn/10sec slot.
As per ET’s brand study, the brand values of franchises have seen increase over the last year.
The highest brand value of a franchise belongs to Mumbai Indians with USD57.13mn. The
corporate side of Mumbai Indians will benefit most from the success of Mumbai Indians. The
immediate second position belongs to Chennai Super Kings. Kolkata Knight Riders have not
performed well in the previous IPL series but it is still able to maintain its brand value at
USD46mn.
We have seen two new teams added in IPL 2011 viz. Kochi Tuskers Kerala which has been
bidded at USD333mn and Pune Warriors at USD370mn (refer Exhibit 7). The increase in the
franchise costs signified the increase in the potential of the brands.

IPL 4
IPL have seen three different winners in three different seasons. Will this season show us
second win for any of the three teams? The competition for contenders has increase with two
new teams participating in the match.
In terms of consistent performance, we see Chennai Super Kings topping the top four charts
in all the series of IPL. Deccan Chargers, Royal Challengers and Delhi Daredevils have done
well to be among top 4 teams for two times in the last three seasons.
Refer to Exhibit 10, in terms of winning ratio of total matches won to total matches played in
all the IPL series (2008, 2009 and 2010), Chennai Super Kings tops the charts with 57%
winning ratio. This is followed by Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Daredevils and Mumbai Indians
with 56%, 55% and 53% winning ratio, respectively.
In IPL 2010 series, the winning ratio was highest for Mumbai Indians at 69% much ahead of
any other team. Mumbai Indians played the finals with the second best team of Chennai
Super Kings which had a winning ratio of 56%. This was followed by four teams with 50%
winning ratio - KKR, DC, RCB and DD.
In overall three seasons, Chennai Super Kings has scored maximum runs of 7,346 whereas
lowest runs have been scored by Kolkata Knight Riders. Delhi Daredevils have taken
maximum 291 wickets in all three seasons whereas KKR again being lowest in the tally.
