Be Like Jesus

Devotional Reading: I Peter 2:18-25

Background Scripture: Philippians 2:1-11
Print: Philippians 2:1-11

Key Verse
Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

Objectives
Upon completion of this lesson, the students should know that:
1. In Christ, being humble is different from being humiliated.
2. We must not allow our surroundings to define us – we need to, through Christ,
define our surroundings.

Philippians 2
Philippians If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any
2:1 fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,
The if’s in each one of these four statements are not just
suggestions, probabilities, or possibilities, they are certainties. This
is almost strong enough to replace the if of each statement with
since.

If there be therefore any consolation in Christ,

consolation: 3874
παράκλησις Paraklesis (par-ak'-lay-sis);

2. importation, supplication, entreaty
3. exhortation, admonition, encouragement
4. consolation, comfort, solace; that which affords comfort or refreshment
a. thus of the Messianic salvation (so the Rabbis call the Messiah the
consoler, the comforter)
5. persuasive discourse, stirring address
a. instructive, admonitory, conciliatory, powerful hortatory discourse

Romans But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet
5:8 sinners, Christ died for us.

if any comfort of love,

I John Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
3:13
I John We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the
3:14 brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
I John Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no
3:15 murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
I John Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us:
3:16 and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

if any fellowship of the Spirit,

I Corinthians For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be
12:13 Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all
made to drink into one Spirit.

if any bowels and mercies,

I John But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and
3:17 shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of
God in him?
I John My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed
3:18 and in truth.
Philippians Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord,
2:2 of one mind.

Romans Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.
12:15
Romans Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but
12:16 condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.

Romans Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded
15:5 one toward another according to Christ Jesus:
Romans That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the
15:6 Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Philippians Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each
2:3 esteem other better than themselves.

Proverbs 10:12 Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.

Proverbs A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger

15:18 appeaseth strife.

Galatians If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

5:25
Galatians Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying
5:26 one another.

James Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him show
3:13 out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
James But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie
3:14 not against the truth.
James This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
3:15
James For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
3:16
James But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle,
3:17 and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality,
and without hypocrisy.
James And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.
3:18
Philippians Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.
2:4

Philippians Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
2:5

Paul illustrated his point by quoting a hymn that described Jesus’ total
obedience to the Father in Philippians 2:6-11

Philippians Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
2:6

Philippians But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was
2:7 made in the likeness of men:
The Kenosis theory is false. Jesus NEVER emptied Himself of His
deity.
Colossians Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit,
2:8 after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not
after Christ.
Colossians For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
2:9

Jesus Christ is the Word (God) who became a man. He added

human nature to His divine nature. He is both human and divine,
and, therefore, has two natures. Yet, He is one person, not two. He
is not part God and part man. He is presently a man, one person,
with two natures where one nature is wholly God and the other
wholly man. (Phil. 2:5-11; Col. 2:9; 1 Tim. 3:16; Heb. 1:5-13; John
1:1-3,14). Jesus will eternally remain as a man and intercedes for us
eternally as a high priest after the order of Melchezedek (Heb. 6:20;
7:25).

The correct doctrine is called the Hypostatic Union. That is the

belief that Jesus is both fully God and fully man, and only gave up
the glory that comes with being deity and being found in fashion as
a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even
the death of the cross.
His flesh was the veil according to Hebrews 10:20. Their were times
that the glory shone through the veil:
Mark And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; so as no fuller
9:3 on earth can white them.
Mark And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking
9:4 with Jesus.

He emptied Himself of the glory of being God:

Isaiah For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a
53:2 dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him,
there is no beauty that we should desire him.
Isaiah He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with
53:3 grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we
esteemed him not.
Isaiah Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did
53:4 esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
Isa 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our
iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his
stripes we are healed.
Isaiah All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own
53:6 way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

But He never emptied Himself of His deity:

John 2:24 But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men,
John 2:25 And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in
man.
Philippians And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto
2:8 death, even the death of the cross.

Isaiah He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is
53:7 brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is
dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
Isaiah He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his
53:8 generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the
transgression of my people was he stricken.
Isaiah And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death;
53:9 because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
Isaiah Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when
53:10 thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall
prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
Isaiah He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his
53:11 knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their
iniquities.
Philippians Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above
2:9 every name:
Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him,
Isaiah Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the
53:12 spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and
he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and
made intercession for the transgressors.

and given him a name which is above every name. We see three
names; Faithful and True, The Word of God, and KING OF KINGS,
AND LORD OF LORDS.
Revelation And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat
19:11 upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he
doth judge and make war.
Revelation His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns;
19:12 and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.
Revelation And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is
19:13 called The Word of God.
Revelation And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white
19:14 horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
Revelation And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should
19:15 smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he
treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
Revelation And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING
19:16 OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
Philippians That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in
2:10 earth, and things under the earth;
There will come a day of universal submission, but now is the time
to accept Him as your savior.
Isaiah Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God,
45:22 and there is none else.
Isaiah I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in
45:23 righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow,
every tongue shall swear.
Isaiah Surely, shall one say, in the LORD have I righteousness and strength:
45:24 even to him shall men come; and all that are incensed against him shall
be ashamed.
Isaiah In the LORD shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.
45:25

Romans But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought
14:10 thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.
Romans For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me,
14:11 and every tongue shall confess to God.
Romans So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
14:12

Philippians And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God
2:11 the Father.

Revelation Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they
1:7 also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail
because of him. Even so, Amen.
Revelation I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord,
1:8 which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

I Corinthians For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all
15:27 things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which
did put all things under him.
I Corinthians And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son
15:28 also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that
God may be all in all.
