Answer ALL questions.

PART A — (10 × 2 = 20 marks)

1. Distinguish between two dimensional pin-jointed perfect frame and

imperfect frame.

2. When is the method of sections is advantages over other methods?

3. Define strength and stiffness.

4. Define principal plane and principal stress.

5. Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams for a simply
supported beam carrying a point load if 10 kN at midspan. Span = 4m.

6. What are the advantages of overhanging beams over simply supported

beams?

7. A simply supported beam 4 m span, 400 mm width and 600 mm depth is

subjected to a maximum bending moment of 1000 kNm. What is the
maximum bending stress?

8. Draw the typical shear stress distribution in an I–beam cross section.

complete turns with a mean radius of 60 mm is subjected to an axial
load of 200 N. Determine the deflection of the spring. C = 80 kN/mm2.

13.(a) A copper rod 25 mm diameter is encased in steel tube 30 mm
internal diameter and 35 mm external diameter. The ends are
rigidly fixed.
The composite bar is 500 mm long and is subjected to an axial pull
of
30 kN. Find the stresses induced in the rod and the tube. E for
steel = 2 × 105 N/mm2, E for copper = 1 × 105 N/mm2.

Or

(b) A bar of 30 mm in diameter was subjected to tensile load of 54 kN and

the measured extension on 300 mm gauge length was 0.112 mm
and change in diameter was 0.00366 mm. Calculate Poisson’s
ratio and the values of three moduli.

14.(a) Prove that the ratio of depth to width of the strongest beam that
can be cut from a circular log of wood having diameter d is 1.414.

(b) A simply supported beam of rectangular section carries a UDL of

5.55 kN/m. The span is 3.6 m. If the depth of section is twice the
width and the stress is not exceed 7 N/mm 2, Find the dimensions of
the
cross–section.

mean.
The shear stress is not to exceed 60 N/mm 2 and the twist in a
length of
3 m is not to exceed 1.4°. Calculate the diameters necessary to
satisfy these conditions. C = 84 kN/mm2.

Or

(b) Design a close coiled helical spring of stiffness 20 N/mm and the
maximum shear stress is not to exceed 80 N/mm2 under a load of
500 N. The diameter of the coil is to be 10 times the diameter of

the wire.
C = 0.84 × 105 N/mm2.
