West Windsor Township is an attractive and tranquil place that has, through the years, attracted a diversity of
people to settle within its boundaries. New Jersey became a royal colony in England in 1702 and remained such
until the Revolutionary War. After America gained its freedom, West Windsor Township was incorporated in
1797 encompassing seven hamlets: Port Mercer, Penn’s Neck, Clarksville, Princeton Junction/Berrien City,
Grover’s Mill, Dutch Neck and Edinburg. By the 1800’s, this prosperous farming community was prized for its
central location between New York and Philadelphia. Today, West Windsor is a major center for research, retail,
and corporate offices with a population of approximately 21,500 residents within its 27 square miles.
One of the most unique tales of West Windsor’s history has to do with the radio broadcast of “War of the
Worlds” by Orson Welles in 1938. The radio program placed the Martian invasion in Grover’s Mill, a section
of West Windsor Township. The town was identified as the landing spot of a Martian invasion. It is rumored
that bullet holes found in the local water tower originate from that fateful night when millions in the listening
audience missed the opening disclaimer of the broadcast. Given West Windsor’s proximity to New York and
Philadelphia and its easy access to the Route 1 Corridor, it is no surprise that both Earthlings and Martians
would like to make their home in West Windsor Township.
West Windsor Township has a long history of balancing development with environmental concerns. In fact, on
October 22, 2002, West Windsor received the “Green Town” award from the leaders of the Environmental
Education Fund and the New Jersey Environmental Lobby. West Windsor was chosen for the 2002 award
because of its activism in protecting water and air quality in the region. West Windsor has preserved almost 47
percent of its land as open space through dedicated parkland, farmland preservation and an Open Space Fund
that started in 1993. The Township’s commitment to the environment is long standing, and was formalized in
1972, when West Windsor formed its environmental commission. Other awards in the area of Environmental
Initiatives include:
