P. 4 Expansion joints
An expansion joint is an opening within a structure
at predetermined locations, designed to absorb
movements of the structure.
Movements are from different origins and may be
defined as follows :
- Thermal : caused by temperature changes within the
structure. Thermal movement is horizontal.
- Seismic : caused by earthquake activity beneath the
structure. Seismic movements are sudden, fast and
may be horizontal, vertical, shear or a combination of
all three.
- Windload induced: caused by high winds forcing the
structure to sway. Windload induced movement is
normally horizontal or shear.

Large tiled bay areas should be divided into smaller
sections in order to absorb substrate movements
and avoid cracks. Openings in the screed at regular
spacing create the field limits . Movement and
screed joints will fill those gaps and compensate
light compression and sliding floor movements.
Thanks to nice design and finsh (colours, materials…) they

will be part of the decoration.

A joint cover is a transition across an expansion
joint opening.
It can be a simple cover or an insert in the opening

engineered to fulfill a variety of additional functions
which might include :
- fit a pre-determined opening size ;
- absorb thermal or seismic building movements ;
- be compatible with various surface finishes ;
- support a given load (floor conditions only)...
