High Common-Mode Current Sense Amplifier Delivers Maximum of 1 μV/°C
Offset Drift
Closed-loop pulse width modulation (PWM) current control is used in a variety of heavy duty hydraulic-electric and pure-electric
systems. These systems often operate in extreme temperature conditions, and system designers must maintain tight control
throughout the specified range. Equally important is protecting the control circuitry against high voltage transients and ensuring
immunity to electromagnetic interference. These requirements can often lead to expensive manufacturing calibration and the
addition of space-consuming input protection devices.

Solution
The AD8207 zero-drift, high voltage, bidirectional current sense amplifier meets the robust performance and survival requirements
for motor and solenoid control in industrial and automotive applications. It features breakthrough temperature accuracy specified
at a maximum of 1 μV/°C offset drift throughout the automotive temperature range of –40°C to +125°C, a 6× improvement over
competing devices for closed-loop PWM current control. The unique architecture
of the AD8207 accurately amplifies small differential current shunt voltages in the
presence of rapidly changing common-mode voltages ranging from –4 V to +65 V.
The new current sense amplifier rejects PWM input common-mode voltages, while
the zero-drift architecture yields the lowest offset drift performance available
today. The adjustable output offset is ideal for bidirectional current measurements.
The AD8207 is also tested for electromagnetic interference (EMI) compliance at
the component level, easing system-level EMI qualification.

Thermocouple Amplifiers Simplify Design with Integrated Cold Junction Compensation
and Highly Accurate Temperature Output
Thermocouple systems provide accurate and reliable temperature measurement and control, cost-effectiveness, and measurement
of a wide range of temperatures. However, to achieve good measurement performance, cold junction compensation and a high gain
accuracy precision amplifier are required.

Solution
The AD8494, AD8495, AD8496, and AD8497 are easy to use amplifiers for J and K type thermocouples. These amplifiers convert
the small voltage generated by a thermocouple junction into a 5 mV/°C signal that can easily be read by an analog-to-digital
converter (ADC) or microcontroller. These devices perform cold junction compensation using an on-board temperature sensor with
accurate measurement over a wide range of ambient (junction) temperatures. High common-mode rejection (0.3°C/V) allows the
devices to reject common-mode noise sometimes associated with long lead thermocouples.
These devices operate off a wide variety of supply voltages from single +2.7 V to ±18 V. In single-supply operation, they can directly
interface to lower supply ADCs, while higher dual-supply voltages can be used for industrial systems that require a wide common-
mode input range. With a single 5 V supply, the devices can
cover nearly 1000°C of a thermocouple’s temperature range.
A reference pin allows for level shifting of the 0°C output so Functional Block Diagram

ADC Driver Provides Fast Slew Rates for Time Domain Focused Instrumentation
Applications
In short acquisition time instrumentation, such as oscilloscopes, particle analyzers, and data acquisition systems, where dc
voltage level and high slew rates are of great importance and bandwidths extend to the gigahertz, driving an analog-to-digital
converter (ADC) can present a problem. Designed specifically to drive 8-bit and 10-bit gigasample flash ADCs, the ADA4960
ultrawideband ADC driver/differential amplifier is a natural choice for these applications. The device can drive signals from dc to
250 MHz with 70 dBc SFDR, to 500 MHz with 66 dBc SFDR, and to 1 GHz with 55 dBc SFDR. It also offers excellent slew rates
(differential slew rate = 8000 V/μs), as well as a low RTI noise of 3.6 nV/√Hz. The ADA4960 can support gain configurations from
6 dB to 18 dB, programmable with a single external gain setting resistor, which means that the nominal input impedance of
5 kΩ single-ended, 10 kΩ differential does not change with gain. It is available as a single channel device in a 16-lead,
3 mm × 3 mm LFCSP (ADA4960-1).

Best-in-Class Voltage Feedback Amplifier Offers Low Distortion and Noise Using
Only 5 mA Supply Current
The ADA4857 voltage feedback amplifier sets a new low power standard for systems that require dynamic range, precision, and
speed. The device provides the best combination of speed (850 MHz, 2800 V/μs), low noise (4.4 nV/√Hz), and low distortion
(–88 dBc @ 10 MHz) in the industry and uses only 5 mA of supply current. In portable high speed applications where power,
speed, and distortion matter, the ADA4857 delivers with ease. With up to 50% less heat dissipation, the AD4857 minimizes passive
and active thermal management design issues that require heat sinks, cooling fans, etc., allowing system designers to reduce
development costs and design complexity.
The ADA4857 also features a dedicated feedback pin (invented by ADI), which simplifies board layout and improves circuit
performance. The device is also pin-for-pin compatible with standard SOIC package op amps. The ADA4857 is available as a single-
channel device (ADA4857-1) in 8-lead LFCSP and 8-lead SOIC packaging, or as a dual-channel device (ADA4857-2) in a 16-lead
LFCSP package. All packages include an exposed paddle that provides a low thermal resistance path to the PCB—enabling more
efficient heat transfer and increasing reliability.

Software-Programmable Current and Voltage Output Drivers Bolster Industrial and

Process Control System Flexibility and Performance
Programmable logic controllers, factory automation, and industrial control systems communicate via a 4 mA to 20 mA current loop or
control actuators via bipolar voltage outputs. These systems require high performance programmable analog drivers that can be easily
tailored to optimize system designs.

Solution
The AD5748 and AD5749 are complete, easy to use, programmable single-channel analog output drivers. They eliminate the need
for additional external components, like shunt resistors or range selection resistor networks, simplifying system design. These drivers
take the analog output from a discrete low voltage DAC, such as the AD566x nanoDAC® family (AD5664, AD5660), and condition it to
provide the desired loop output. With hardware or software user-programmable current and voltage outputs, the AD5748 meets the
needs of highly configurable industrial systems. Both the AD5748 and AD5749 offer best-in-class performance specifications with TUE
accuracy of ±0.2% FSR and full-scale drift of ±2 ppm/°C over the full operating temperate range, enabling the realization of high
performance cost-efficient systems. ADI’s complete portfolio of footprint and software-compatible output drivers offers designers an
easy to use, flexible solution that facilitates the development of reliable, cost-efficient process control equipment.

High Resolution, Zero-Drift Current Sense Amplifier

High-side current sensing is used for a variety of precision closed-loop control and diagnostic functions. These range from power
amplifiers in base stations to power supplies in servers. Measuring a load current that can vary from several milliamps to many amps
through a small shunt resistor can be a challenge. On the low end of the current range, resolution of the amplifier is key to reducing
measurement error, while on the high end, power dissipation in the shunt is a limiting factor.

Solution
The AD8217 is a unidirectional high-side current sense amplifier designed to provide optimal resolution and accuracy over
temperature. It offers designers a flexible, low cost, and accurate solution, eliminating the need for costly temperature calibration.
The AD8217 features a maximum initial offset of ±250 μV/°C and an initial
gain error of ±0.1% allowing for accurate amplification of very small differential V DD
voltages throughout the common-mode range of 4.5 V to 80 V. The CMRR of the
