Introduction

Troubleshooting components in EBS 5.0

Introduction
Instructions are given below on how to go about
troubleshooting components and circuits in
EBS 5.0.
For troubleshooting you need:
• SDP3
• Test box 588 887
• Extension cable 588 888
• Cable harness for EBS 99 605
• Overlay for EBS 99 608

305 249
• Manometer 99 399 (0-15 bar)
• Wiring diagram for EBS Test box 588 887

The test box and cable harness for EBS are used
to measure the components of the EBS system.
The measurements are used in addition to the
diagnostics tool when troubleshooting.
Start by asking the customer whether they
noticed anything unusual when the problem
occurred or whether there is anything else that
might be linked to the problem. Use SDP3 and
always work from the fault codes that are
available and anything else you can read off in
307 526

SDP3. Use those elements of troubleshooting

that are relevant to the vehicle you are
troubleshooting. Cable harness for EBS 99 605
We recommend reading the whole section for a
component before starting troubleshooting.

1 Connect SDP3 to the vehicle.
2 Check fault codes for the service brake
module.
3 Check the potentiometer signals and the
wake-up signal in SDP3.

There are inactive fault codes for the potentiometers. Fault codes can switch
between active and inactive. The potentiometer signals show the correct values in
SDP3 when the brake pedal is released or depressed.
Continue troubleshooting from the section "Potentiometer signals can be read off in
SDP3".

There are active fault codes for the potentiometers. No potentiometer signals or
potentiometer signals provide incorrect values in SDP3.
Continue troubleshooting from the section "No potentiometer signals or potentiometer
signals provide incorrect values in SDP3".

The wake-up signal is not activated in SDP3 when the brake pedal is depressed.

parameters
1 In SDP3 it may be difficult to see the
movement in the potentiometer signals
clearly as the pedal moves; with the test
box and a multimeter, this is easier to read
off.
2 Switch on the power using the starter key.
3 Measure between the following pins:
• Potentiometer 1: pins B6 and B4 (grey)
• Potentiometer 2: pins B3 and B4 (grey)
4 Gently depress the brake pedal and check
that the signal follows the movement of the
pedal.

Service brake module

The wake-up signal is not activated in SDP3 when the brake pedal is
depressed

1 Gently depress the brake pedal while
reading off the voltage for potentiometer 1
in SDP3.
When the voltage level on potentiometer 1
is between 0.9 and 1.75 V, the voltage of
the wake-up signal should drop to half of
the battery voltage.
When the brake pedal is fully depressed,
the voltage should again be equal to the
battery voltage.
If the voltage is equal to the battery voltage
throughout the pedal movement, there is a
fault on the service brake module. U30 = Battery voltage

Wear sensor

Wear sensor
1 Connect SDP3 to the vehicle.
2 Check the fault codes for the wear sensors.
Check which wear sensor the fault code
refers to and which control module the wear
sensor is connected to.

Note: The wear sensors that are connected to the

same control module have a shared supply 1
voltage. Fault codes for the supply voltage are
set for the wear sensor on one of the wheels,
which is misleading because the control unit
cannot distinguish which of the wear sensors is
causing the fault. 2 2

Control module

Control module in back-up mode

When the ignition voltage is switched on with
the starter key, the control unit supplies voltage
to all control modules for a short time. For
faults where the message "EBS check - press
brake pedal" is displayed in the instrument
cluster, it is possible to measure the voltage
because the control unit supplies voltage to the
control module while the brake pedal is
depressed and verification is carried out. For
other faults, voltage is supplied to the control
module only for a few milliseconds, which
does not allow any measurements to be taken.

"EBS check - press brake pedal" is displayed in the instrument

cluster.
Continue with step 1 below.

"EBS check - press brake pedal" is not displayed in the

section "Troubleshooting CAN".

Resistance = 0 ohm
Short-circuit, check the cable harness.

Resistance = infinite
Break, check the cable harness.

If the cable harness has no faults, there is a

fault on the control unit.
3 Connect the test box to the control unit
without connecting the cable harness to the
control unit, and measure the resistance
between the supply voltage and the earth
again.
The resistance should be
• 6 kOhms for a single control module
• 2.5 kOhms for a double control module
If the resistance is OK, continue with
"Troubleshooting CAN".
If the resistance is not OK, there is a fault on
the control module.

Control module

Troubleshooting CAN
1 Connect the test box to the control module.
2 Measure the resistance on the CAN cables
between CAN high and CAN low.
Pins C3 and C4 (red).
The resistance depends on how many
control modules are connected.

Number of control Resistance

modules
2 108-128 ohms
3 74-94 ohms
4 55-75 ohms

If the resistance is not correct

3 Check the CAN cable harness.
Tip: You can try disconnecting different
control modules and measuring the resistance
to find out whether there is a fault in the CAN
communication to any control module.
If there are CAN-related fault codes for all
control modules, the fault is probably in the
control unit.

Control module

Checking brake pressure

1 Fill the pneumatic system with air and
check that the pressure is sufficient under
test.
2 Connect manometers to the brake chambers.
3 Press the brake pedal to the floor and read
off the pressure on the manometers.
The brake pressure should follow the
movement of the pedal and should be equal
to the system pressure (bar) with the brake
pedal fully depressed.
If the control module is not in back-up
mode, compare with the pressure displayed
in SDP3 to ensure that the pressure sensor is
reading correctly.
Check that no air is escaping via the control
module silencers when the brake pedal is
fully depressed.

Low brake pressure

Check the supply pressure to the control
module.

4 Release the brake pedal and check that the

pressure drops immediately.

Pressure does not drop immediately

Check that the silencer is not blocked.

Trailer control module

Trailer control module

1 Connect SDP3 to the vehicle.
2 Check fault codes for the trailer control
module.
If the customer has found that the trailer brakes
too hard, there may be a fault on the trailer
control module pressure sensor even though
there is no fault code.
Depending on the guidance you obtain from
SDP3, continue troubleshooting from the
appropriate section.

Troubleshooting the trailer

control module pressure sensor
1 Check the signal voltage from the trailer
control module pressure sensor in SDP3.

If signal voltage in SDP3 = Yes, continue from section "Signal voltage shown
in SDP3".
If signal voltage in SDP3 = No, continue from section "No signal voltage in
SDP3".

Signal voltage shown in SDP3

1 Release the parking brake.
2 Apply the brakes a little and then continue
to depress the brake pedal and measure the
pressure in the trailer coupling with the
manometer and compare with SDP3.
Signal voltage does not follow braking
3 Switch off the ignition voltage and connect
the test box to the trailer control module.

5 Measure the voltage between pin 5, black
(earth) and the chassis to check the earthing.

Voltage = 5 V
Break in the ground connection between the
trailer control module and the control unit.

6 Test the cable harness, test in the joint and

the cab grommet to locate the fault.

Voltage = 0 V
Earthing is OK.

7 Measure the signal voltage at the trailer

control module by depressing the brake
pedal and checking pressure and voltage.
See curve.
Pins A5 and A6 (black)

If the voltage is lower than 0.7 V or higher than

4.5 V, or the voltage does not follow the curve,
there is a fault on the pressure sensor.
If the signal voltage at the trailer control module
is correct.
