Prior Experience with Universal Music applications and employees:
Universal Music was part of the various Universal Studios owning corporations fo
r many of the 19 years of employment at Universal. Specific assignments and resp
onsibilities included interaction before and after the separation of the Univers
al Music systems. Colleagues acquaintances include many prior and several curren
t Universal Music employees.
Business Analysis Background and Procedures:
Over 10+ Years of experience in Software design, development, Application testin
g, integration, and
implementation. As part of other roles, over 5+ years of collective experience a
s a Business Systems Analyst with extensive knowledge in software development li
fe cycle including Requirements gathering, Detailed design definition, Business
process flows, Documentation, Validation, UAT, Use Case development, participati
ng and sometimes facilitating JAD type sessions, walkthroughs with relevant stak
eholders.
Experience spans the application user interface to the internal byte level: usin
g applications, gathering and documenting requirements for applications, specify
ing, designing, programming, testing, implementing applications, reviewing out-s
ourced development, supporting and debugging applications and to some extent sys
tem problems, supporting platform network daemons, training users and technical
staff. Experience includes participating in several web-based application lifecy
cles as well as the following:
* Writing specifications and reviewing work for in-house as well as out-sourced
and offshore suppliers,
* Reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating business systems and user needs
* Interviewing business users, developing and writing detailed business and func
tional requirements documents, workflow diagrams for requested system enhancemen
ts and new features requests
* Ensuring that the development team has a complete understanding of the require
ments and adequately addresses them in the development process
* Assisting QA in developing user-acceptance test plans and sign-off document an
d procedures
* Solid technical understanding of web based applications
* Solid documentation skills, e.g.: scope documentation, business requirements d
ocumentation, functional specifications, user guides, etc.
* Writing detailed description of user needs, use cases, program functions, and
steps required to develop or modify computer programs.
* Experience in web-based application lifecycle.
* Familiarity with relational database concepts, and client-server concepts.
* Demonstrated creativity and flexibility
* Strong web application development lifecycle understanding
* Enterprise Architect understanding
* Strong business process and requirements definitions skills.
* Strong interpersonal and team skills
* Proven ability to multi-task - excellent verbal and written communication skil
ls with both internal and external customers
* Experience with some of the Business Analyst methodologies
* Experience with Project Management methodologies
* Experience with Microsoft tools (Excel, Project, PowerPoint, Visio).
The project management, development. and SLDC technologies and methodologies dif
fered depending on the company and project procedures. Paramount and Universal p
rojects took advantage of collaboration shareware provisions and repositories. R
equirements gathering often included both user interview, specification, and cur
rent system analysis. Roles ranged from sole and total responsibility for most o
f the tasks in smaller efforts, to more limited and specific tasks as member of
teams such as preparing the Deceased Residuals documentation for the Universal S
AP project. Whether developed in-house or outsourced, a key strategy resulting i
n achieving Critical Success Factors was defining the requirements, business pro
cesses, and design specifications in sufficient detail for the user audience and
especially the technical developers to correctly guide the process.
The latest work on Sony Payroll was not as formal but included some JAD-like ste
ps with multiple requirements gathering, review, and approval cycles before proc
eeding to the next step. At Paramount, there were several degrees of SLDC formal
ities, with the ACCENTURE led SAP project being the most formal. The Universal S
AP projects used very formal and thorough but proprietary ACCENTURE SLDC and pro
ject management software and procedures. Other projects at Universal, used a sli
ghtly less formal "4D" approach, Discover (Requirements), Design(specifications)
, Develop(Build), Deploy(Implement), as well as post-implementation review and f
ollow on projects. The Universal Re-Engineering Projects were led by Price Water
house and had many elements of JAD. For the several companies and projects, many
standard or equivalent techniques were used including Entity Relationship analy
sis and Diagrams, EXCEL inventories and Check Lists for business function and mo
dules, Erwin and other software repositories and tools like ACCENTURES proprieta
ry software which my analysis activities and work products fed. User interaction
included a range from some joint application development sessions, as well as t
eam and one to one interviews.
For example, at Paramount, one detail business process walkthrough method used,
was to present a slideshow of each screen interspersed with a few specific instr
uctions for the accounting group to show exactly what their enhanced procedure w
ould be. This joint meeting was preceded and prepared for with representative in
dividual meetings and RAD cycles to determine how the enhancement should work. R
eiterative cycles were spawned to further develop and refine the process before
the UAT phase. In several projects, detailed and exhaustive test cases were crea
ted, tested, and evaluated for match
of expected results to actual results. Some of the user cases were directly desi
gned and executed by the
users. System integration test cases were defined and scheduled with the user ca
ses in a joint effort.
Experience includes exposure to both Micro Soft and JAVA WEB technical details.
At Sony, problems with the Web Services GL Account Validation interfaces had to
be researched and the specifications written
And approved to correct. Also at Sony, the JAVA struts, Fire Fox, port listeners
and dispatchers, Catalina, Electronic Pay Stub Web system and modules had to be
reverse engineered to discover and fix where the sign-on user-id and password h
ad been hard-coded. Unix system administration training included the techniques
for setting up Mounting and using MS file structures and vice versa. Other train
ing classes included some Web Sphere and creating a sample CGI program. The JAVA
, .NET, Visual Basic, and other training classes and personal study such as the
C# language, fleshed out other object oriented and Web Technologies understandin
g.
In the Universal ACCENTURE SAP project, TIBCO middleware, platform network daemo
ns, UDP, TC/IP research for instance added to the technical background necessary
to fully appreciate and write specifications for the WEB environment and illust
rate the aptitude and personal responsibility taken to gain this technical knowl
edge in a continual program of self-development. The multi-million dollar Univer
sal ACCENTURE SAP Conversion project included involvement in all levels of the d
ecided upon Enterprise Architecture analysis, diagrams, and processes. Additiona
lly, there were some opportunities to feed information and influence the design
and implementations of unfinished details.
Visual image documents similar to wire frames based on site maps have been used.
Business analysis techniques though have had to be augmented to include good ve
rbal interaction and walk-throughs for the significant segment of users who don'
t catch the options, hierarchies, flows, and processes indicated in the diagrams
.
Interaction with other professionals has led to exposure to Rational Rose and ot
her business analysis tools.
Essential MS products have been used to varying degrees. (ACCENTURE used LOTUS N
OTES). EXCEL
Has been used extensively for inventory and checklists. Powerpoint has been used
somewhat. VISIO
Has been used for system diagrams and some business process pictorals. MS Projec
t reports have been used extensively, created by other members of the projects.
