Operate safety equipment and use safe work habits. Weld components in flat posit
ions. Detect faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notify sup
ervisors. Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segme
nts, using processes such as plasma arc. Monitor the fitting, burning, and weldi
ng processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion, or
expansion of material. Examine work pieces for defects and measure work pieces
with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications. Recog
nize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such
as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment. Lay out, position, a
lign, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, co
mbination squares, calipers, and rulers.

lems and determine how to correct them, checking blueprints, repair manuals, and
parts catalogs as necessary. Adjust, connect, or disconnect wiring, piping, tub
ing, and other parts, using hand or power tools. Cut, thread, and hammer pipe to
specifications, using tools such as saws, cutting torches, and pipe threaders a
nd benders. Assemble and secure pipes, tubes, fittings, and related equipment, a
ccording to specifications, by welding, brazing, cementing, soldering, and threa
ding joints. Attach pipes to walls, structures and fixtures, such as radiators o
r tanks, using brackets, clamps, tools or welding equipment. Inspect, examine, a
nd test installed systems and pipelines, using pressure gauge, hydrostatic testi
ng, observation, or other methods.
