Founded in 1842, Walworth® has been leader in the valve industry since its inception, continuing to utilize the
latest technology for product improvement and the development of new products. Today, Walworth® offers
complete lines of industrial valves in a variety of configurations, sizes, pressure classes and materials.
Walworth® continues to meet and exceed the quality standards required for products used in Nuclear, Military,
Industrial and Process installations. These valves are manufactured under and comply with strict international
standards such as API, ANSI, ASME, ASTM, MSS, NACE, AWWA, BSI, CSA, etc.
Walworth® Engineers are continuously evaluating our existing product utilizing all of today’s advanced analysis and
engineering tools to assure that our valves conform to customer requirements as well as industry standards.
New designs are made following the same rigorous methodology and are tested in our laboratory under actual
load/pressure conditions. Additionally, they are subjected to cyclic operation under pressure to determine
wear/life expectancy.
All Walworth® manufacturing facilities operate under quality systems such as the International Standards
Organization ISO-9001 series and the American Petroleum Institute API Q1 Specifications for quality. These
systems have been in place for more than ten years and are audited for compliance by independent auditors
for ISO and/or API as well as by such customers as BP/Arco, Shell Oil, Exxon/Mobil, Texaco, Dow Chemical,
etc.
Casting and forging product quality is assured through close control of our own foundry and forging facilities.
The same type of close control is exercised over all of our suppliers through continuous verification of materials
and part, form, fit and function.
The Walworth® group of enterprises is dedicated to the design, manufacture and servicing of flow control products
that effectively meet our customers requirements.

1
The complete line of Walworth® products are manufactured under a controlled
Quality Assurance System with documented procedures that meet all industry
specifications and customer requirements. These procedures and controls include
raw material purchasing and verification, process controls, assembly, test and
shipping with all required documentation.

The Walworth® Quality Assurance System is documented in a Manual that has

been approved by ISO and API. Walworth® has been awarded an ISO-9001
Certificate and is licensed by API to monogram API 6A and API 6D product under
the API Q1 monogram program.

Each valve undergoes a design validation through a function and pressure test to
demonstrate conformance to requirements. This results in a Material Test Report
(MTR) documenting the chemical and mechanical properties for the pressure
containing parts that is traceable to the valve serial number. The results of any
additional non-destructive examinations (NDE) are also recorded and referenced
to the valve serial number.

All valves are identified and marked conforming to the requirements of ASME B
16.34 and MSS SP-25 both on the valve body and valve name plate.

Certified Quality Control

Fire Testing
Installation area for valves subject to fire testing under API
requirements. The test exposes the valve to a flame temperature
of 1400°F to 1800°F for 30 minutes with controlled limits on
leakage.

Test Loop
This is where valve designs are verified and validated,
by cycling the valves open-closed and opening under
pressure. This requires from four (4) to six (6) months
to complete 3000 to 5000 cycles.

Pressure Transients Test Loop

This test exposes plug valves to the extreams of both positive
and negative pressure transients to verify that the plug in a
balanced plug design will not lock-up in the body.

Fugitive Emissions Test

The measurement of emissions through the body/bonnet joint and
past the stem packing are made under full rated pressure. The
measurements are made in both the static and dynamic conditions
under both ambient and thermal cycle operations.

Control and Recording

A computerized system is used to control the test and to
record the results. This provides accurate and permanent
documentation.

Cast Steel Globe Valve with Rising Handwheel and Stem

Impactor Handwheel, the mechanism is based on

transmitting the momentum generated by the mass of the
handwheel through the impact/impulse generated during
the snap closure action of the handwheel. This type of Handwheel Nut
handwheel is used when a standard handwheel cannot Handwheel
create enough closing force to effect a seal. Handwheel Washer

• Stem Nut
Set Screw

Stem Nut replaceable in

the line. Stem

Revolving rising stem with

precision ACME thread.
Eyebolt
Stem Packing is designed for Eyebolt Nut
optimum control of fugitive
emissions leakage to the Gland Plate
atmosphere. The ultra low
emission leakage rate is assured Packing Bushing
by the fine finish in the
stem, the reduced diametrical
clearences and the stem
straightness control. Eyebolt Pin

Bonnet Stud
Body to Bonnet Joint designed Bonnet Stud Nut
to apply a uniform load to the
Bonnet
gasket to assure a leak proof
seal.

Backseat designed to relieve Stem Packing

back pressure on the stem
packing when fully seated.
Replacing stem packing under Bonnet Gasket
pressure is not recommended.
Body

Conical Disc, integrally guided to

assure true alignment between Bonnet Bushing
disc and valve body. The loose
disc design allows the disc and
seat ring sealing surface to seat
correctly without damage.

Disc Locknut
Disc
Stellited Seat Ring, providing Disc Washer
increased resistance to ware,
abrasion and erosion Seat Ring
of the sealing surface.

Seat ring is seal welded to

provide a bubble tight joint..

Walworth® remains a leader in the development of new
valve technology just as it has been since it was established
in 1842. One example of our continued development is the
extensive testing of many different Packing Systems for
improved/lower fugitive emissions in our standard " valves.

A great number of different volatile organic compounds

(VOC) have been identified as potentially damaging to the
atmosphere and human health. These VOC’s are generally
found in processes used in refineries and chemical plants
and can be emitted to the atmosphere past sealing members of
various pressure vessels such as pumps, compressors, valves,
etc. Close control of these fugitive emissions has become a
law enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
and other International Environmental Control Agencies.
Fugitive emissions test at ambient temperature.
Walworth® has tested body to bonnet seals for zero
leakage and developed and tested new technology for stem
packing that achieves a lower than 50 PPM leakage rate.
This technology is standard in all Walworth® off-the-shelf
valves making our standard valve acceptable in countries
and facilities where strict control of emissions is required.

Walworth® can also furnish an ultra low emissions stem

packing utilizing a live loading system to achieve a consistant
long term very low emission leakage rate.

Fugitive emissions test at high temperature.

Equipment and installation for fugitive emission measurement with methane and helium gass at bott
ambient temperature and hight temperature.

Cover Stud

Body to Cover Joint designed to Cover Stud Nut

apply a uniform load to the gasket
to assure a leak proof seal. Cover
Seat Rings are seal
welded to provide a bubble
tight joint.

Disc to Hanger connection

allows the disc a controlled
movement independent Cover Gasket
of the hanger to assure proper
disc alignment with the seat at
closure.

The connection is
secured by a welded disc nut
to prevent disassembly due to Hanger Pin
vibration and closure impact.

Seat Ring
Stellited Seat Ring provides
Disc Nut
increased resistance to wear
abrasion and erosion of the Disc
sealing surface.

Walworth® gate valves are available with either flexible wedges or solid wedges to meet customer requirements.

Flexible wedge characteristics:

• Provides resistance to possible wedge/seat sticking from high temperature to low temperature fluctuations
by compensating for the resulting small body/seat movement.

• Facilitates seating and sealing and assures a long wear life.

• Susceptable to build-up when used with fluids having a high solids content.

Solid wedge characteristics:

• More susceptable to wedge/seat "sticking" and difficulty in opening when closed hot and allowed to cool due to the
resulting small body/seat movement.

• Less able to compensate for the normal wedge/seat wear over the long term.

• Will handle fluids with a high solids content without difficulty.

41
Walworth® Cast Steel Valves, are furnished with seal welded seat rings as standard. This permits
a leak proof assembly that is separately hydrostatically pressure tested assuring a positive seal.

Seal Welded Seat Rings

• Welded in seat rings become an integral part of the body maintaining the original wedge/disc
alignment for long life. Seal welded seat rings can be replaced and retired.

Threaded Seat Rings

• Threaded seat rings require a thread sealant that can be a problem at high temperature. This
could lead to an alignment problem if the seat ring were to become loose due to a loss of
sealant. The threads are also more susceptible to corrosion than the solid make-up of the seal
welded seat ring.

Stem Extensions and Floor Stands

Stem extensions and floor stands are used to facilitate
operation of a valve installed either underground, in a
vault, or on a platform. These arrangements are available
for either handwheel, chainwheel or gear operation. The
distance from the center of the valve port to the top of the
stem or center line of the gear operator must be specified
for stem extensions. The distance from the center of the
valve port to the floor level must be specified for a floor
stand mounting.

Lever and Counter Weight

A lever and counter weight is used on a swing check valve

to help control the valve opening under variable flow con-
ditions to prevent disc flutter and also to assist/control the
disc closing under a rapid flow reversal condition to prevent
disc/seat damage. A spring can also be used with a lever to
provide a more rapid closing as can a dash pot or snubber
to soften the closing seat contact during a flow reversal.
