 M-Tech Academic Project in Central Power Research Institute, Bangalore on “Application of

Voltage Source Converter based STATCOM for Control of Unbalanced Loads And
Mitigation of Voltage Fluctuations Caused By Electric Arc Furnaces in Real-Time Digital
Simulation”

Page | 1
Abstract:

Electrical arc furnaces (EAF) in an industrial distribution system result in random dynamic voltage drops
in the power supply. Operation of arc furnace is said to inject harmonic current into the power distribution
network causing voltage distortion which not only reduces power supplied to the furnace but also
adversely affects the quality of the source voltage. In order to overcome this problem, STATCOM- a fast
acting dynamic reactive compensation device is provided at a suitable location of the power supply
network. Dynamic performance of a typical arc furnace in an industrial distribution system is simulated
with respect to voltage harmonics by using RSCAD in Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS®)
environment. Through simulation study, sizing and control strategy of PWM-based STATCOM have
been arrived so as to improve the power quality as per IEEE Standard 519-1992.

Industrial Training Report (M-Tech during Year 2007-08):

 Industrial Training Report on “SCADA IN POWER SYSTEMS” in APTRANSCO, Vidyuth

Southa, Hyderabad.

Description:

In this project, various SCADA applications in Power systems, with emphasis on their use in LOAD
DESPATCH are analyzed. For clear concept and good field experience, SCADA systems are observed,
which are in operation and studied in detail the working of present SCADA system of Transmission
Corporation of A.P. Limited (APTRANSCO) in Backup State Load Dispatch Center (SLDC) located at
Vidyut Soudha, Hyderabad. With the vision of State Load Dispatch Center, Mamidipally, commissioned
recently under Unified Load Dispatch scheme with latest SCADA and EMS Functions, the data in a user-
friendly interface to the Grid Operator for easier analysis and decision-making is utilized.

Description:

The industrial security system is one of the developments made to control the process as well as to secure
the industry automatically. The industrial security system comes under the class of emerging embedded
technologies with micro controller as controlling processor. The Smoke sensors will always look for the
smoke sensing and will inform the micro controller in case of any Smoke is observed. The temperature
sensor maintains the heat at the specified level. LDR is used to sense the Light. According to the Sensors
the Micro controller will activate. This project is intended to design a system that supports wireless
communication-using RF. The data will be transmitted over the free space (Channel), is received by
another device (like micro controller).

RELEVANT WORKING EXPERIENCE

 Currently Working as Project Associate from November 22nd to Till Date under R-APDRP for
“SCADA/DMS Project implementation Consultant” in Utility Automation Research Centre
(UARC), Central Power Research Institute (CPRI), Bangalore.

1. The SCADA implementation Agency (SIA) in coordination with Utility carried out field
survey, design, engineering, supply, installation, testing & commissioning of
SCADA/DMS software applications, Dispatcher Training Simulator (DTS), hardware,
software, network, etc.
2. Integration with existing/under implementation IT system under R-APDRP and any other
relevant SCADA/DMS legacy system in the identified project areas of utility.

 Worked as a Research Associate for 6 months under the Research project “Energy Savings
by Advancing the Indian Standard Time by Half an Hour and maintaining the Time Zones”
under the Supervision of Prof. Dr. Sen Gupta and Prof. Dr. Dileep Ahuja in National Institute of
Advanced Studies (NIAS), Indian Institute of Science (IISC) Campus, Bangalore. The
