Reset
To reset your iPod:

• 1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
• 2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until
the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this
step.

Tip:

o If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface.
Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part
of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu
button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
o If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter
and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to
your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go
to sleep.

Retry
Retry your iPod with a different USB port on your computer, not a USB port on your
keyboard or hub.
Restart
Restart your computer, and make sure that you have the latest software updates
installed.
Note:

• To update your Windows software, select Windows Update from the Tools
menu of Internet Explorer.
• To update your Mac OS software, select Software Update from the Apple
menu.

Reinstall
• To update and reinstall your iPod software, first download the latest version of
iTunes.
• Next, open the new version of iTunes and connect your iPod to your
computer.
• Select your iPod in the source list and click "Check for Update" under the
Summary tab. iTunes will check to see if your iPod needs to be updated and
perform the update for you.
• If this does not resolve the issue, try completely uninstalling iTunes and then
reinstalling the latest version of iTunes. For more information select from the
following:

Mac OS X|XP|Vista

Restore
• Note: Because Restore erases all of the songs and files on iPod, make sure to
back up any files you've saved on the iPod disk. All of your songs, videos,
podcasts, audiobooks, and games can be loaded back to your iPod provided
that you have them stored in your iTunes Library.

How to restore your iPod:

• 1. Make sure you've reinstalled the latest version of iTunes.

• 2. Open iTunes, and then connect your iPod to your computer.
• 3. After a few moments, it will appear in the source list in iTunes. If the iPod's
display doesn't show "Connected" or "Do not disconnect" you may need to put
the iPod into disk mode to proceed.
• 4. Select your iPod in the source list and you will see information about it
appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes windows.
• 5. Click the Restore button. You will be prompted with one or more restore
options that may prompt iTunes to automatically download of the latest iPod
Software. The 4 possible restore options are:
o Restore Option 1: Restore - Restores with same iPod Software version
already on iPod.
o Restore Option 2: Use Same Version - Restores with same iPod
Software version already on iPod even though a newer version is
available.
o Restore Option 3: Use Newest Version - Restores with the latest iPod
Software on your computer.
o Restore Option 4: Restore and Update - Restores with the latest iPod
Software on your computer.

Note: For Mac users, A message will appear prompting you to enter an
administrator's name and password.

• 6. A progress bar will appear on the computer screen indicating that the first
stage of the restore process has started. When this stage is completed, iTunes
will instruct you to leave iPod connected to your computer to complete
restore.
• 7. During the stage 2 of the restore process, the iPod will show an Apple logo
as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod
remains connected to the computer or iPod Power adapter during this stage.
Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see since the backlight on the iPod
display may be off.
• 8. After stage 2 of the restore process is complete and the iPod is connected to
the computer, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear asking you to
name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences similar to when you
connected your iPod for the first time.

If the iPod isn’t synching automatically, then

switch auto-sync on, otherwise switch auto-sync
off
In your iTunes, go "Edit > Preferences". Click the Devices tab. Check "Prevent iPods
and iPhones from syncing automatically". Click okay.

After clicking on your ipod in the left hand menu, the ipod menu should show up on
itunes. Now click "Restore". At this point itunes will freeze, I think, if I remember
correctly. Wait about 2-3 minutes and it should begin working again. If not, restart
your computer and try the whole process again.

Check the iPod drive for errors in Disk Mode

It might be worth checking her for any disk damage. Put her into disk mode and
attach her to the PC. (Don't open iTunes.) Now try running a disk check over the iPod
as per the instructions in the following document. (Select both Automatically fix file
system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.)

You can help solve some computer problems and improve the performance of your
computer by making sure that your hard disk has no errors.

1. Open Computer by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Computer.
2. Right-click the hard disk drive that you want to check, and then click
Properties.
3. Click the Tools tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check Now. If
you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the
password or provide confirmation.

To automatically repair problems with files and folders that the scan detects,
select Automatically fix file system errors. Otherwise, the disk check will
simply report problems but not fix them.
To perform a thorough disk check, select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad
sectors. This scan attempts to find and repair physical errors on the hard disk
itself, and it can take much longer to complete.

To check for both file errors and physical errors, select both Automatically fix
file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

4. Click Start.

=====

Go into disk cleaner utility and delete all

temporary files on PC (iTunes temp files can get
corrupted).

Format the iPod to FAT32 in disk mode

Re-authorize the computer

iTunes crashing when iPod/iPhone is connected

Several users are experiencing problems wherein iTunes crashes when they attach
iPhones or iPods to their systems. In some instances the program will hang with the
spinning wheel, and in other instances the program will unexpectedly quit.

Apple Discussions poster Tom75 writes:

"When plugging my iPhone to my iMac (april 08 model) USB: iTunes keeps quiting
unexpectedly and I keep sending the feedback to Apple."

Users with this problem may only experience these crashes with one ipod device.
Some users with iPhones have been able to synchronize them properly, but when
connecting standard ipods the problems occur. Still, others have been stuck with all
their mobile devices causing the program to crash.

It appears at least for iPhone users this problem has to do with the authorizing
routines after upgrading to the iPhone 2.2.1 software. The following fix has been tried
for iPhones and seems to clear the problem, but doing similar things may work for
standard iPods as well.
Fix: Re-authorize the computer Open iTunes without the iPod/iPhone attached.
Then select "Deauthorize Computer..." from the "Store" menu and confirm
deauthorization by entering the iTunes store credentials. Then authorize the computer
from the same menu, and go to the iTunes store. Ensure the store is working by
getting some free content such as the single of the week, a TV episode, or a free
iPhone app. Then try syncing the new file to the mobile device.

Users may also try removing the iTunes preferences file as well, if the problem still
persists. After deauthorizing the computer, close iTunes and remove the
"com.apple.iTunes.plist" file located in the /username/Library/Preferences/ directory.
Then relaunch iTunes and continue authorizing.
