Global Warming:-

INTRODUCTION:

Global warming is one of the most serious challenges facing us today. To

protect the health and economic well-being of current and future
generations, we must reduce our emissions of heat-trapping gases by using
the technology.
However, Global warming refers to an average increase in the Earth's
temperature, which in turn causes changes in climate. A warmer Earth may
lead to changes in rainfall patterns, a rise in sea level, and a wide range of
impacts on plants, wildlife, and humans. For some of us, the yellow blossom
of a daffodil and opening day at the ballpark are the first signs of spring. For
others, spring also means sneezing and congestion, a box of tissues, and a
trip to the doctor. Unfortunately, this is happening as climate is changing
because of Global warming.
Perhaps one of the causes of the Global warming is Green house effect as
greenhouse gases make the Earth warmer by trapping energy in the
atmosphere. Basically, these gases allow incoming solar radiation to pass
through the Earth's atmosphere, but trap heat by preventing some of the
infrared radiation from the Earth’s surface from escaping to outer space.

CAUSES FOR GLOBAL WARMING:

Global warming is a phenomenon that has been discussed widely

nowadays and global warming causes are one of the most studied subjects
presently in the world. Through out the world many governments, institutes
and universities are trying to find out what are the causes for global
warming. As the effects of global warming is becoming more and more
evident, many of us have started to realize that steps have to be taken to
control Global warming at the earliest and various countries and people have
started working towards it.
The main causes are discussed as follows;

1.Green house gases:

The major cause of global warming is the emission of green house
gases such as,
1.Carbon dioxide(co2).
2.Methane.
3.Nitrous oxide.
4.etc.
Carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide etc into the atmosphere cause air
pollution which in response cause global warming.

CARBON DIOXIDE:
The major source of carbon dioxide is the power plants. These power
plants emit large amounts of carbon dioxide produced from burning of fossil
fuels for the purpose of electricity generation. About twenty percent of carbon
dioxide emitted in the atmosphere comes from burning of gasoline in the
engines of the vehicles. This is true for most of the developed countries.
Buildings, both commercial and residential represent a larger source of global
warming pollution than cars and trucks.
Building of these structures require a lot of fuel to be burnt which emits a large
amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

METHANE:
Methane is more than 20 times as effectual as CO2 at entrapping heat in
the atmosphere. Methane is obtained from resources such as rice paddies,
bovine flatulence, bacteria in bogs and fossil fuel manufacture. When fields are
flooded, anaerobic situation build up and the organic matter in the soil decays,
releasing methane to the atmosphere.

NITROUS OXIDE:
The main sources of nitrous oxide include nylon and nitric acid production,
cars with catalytic converters, the use of fertilizers in agriculture and the
burning of organic matter. Another cause of global warming is deforestation
that is caused by cutting and burning of forests for the purpose of residence
and industrialization.

The man which thinks of himself as the most intelligent thing on earth is
destroying his own habitat. The activities of man has lead to an increase in
the so called greenhouse gases which include carbon dioxide, methane,
nitrogen oxide etc. the gases have created an effect of green house on the
earths surface which prevents the reflection of the rays from sun and thus
causes the increase in temperature. Carbon dioxide concentration in the air
has increased due to the emissions from cars, airplanes, power plants,
industries etc. another reason for it is the deforestation. Forests have been
cut down paying way for agriculture, industries and cities. The trees were
natural regulators of carbon dioxide which used to control its level's in the
atmosphere.

Fortunately, this grave situation is somehow under control. The governments

of various countries and its people have started to understand that they are
one of the causes for the global warming. Therefore combined efforts by the
different countries have started to control the global warming and to prevent
our habitat from destruction.
People now-a-days are becoming more educated about the global warming
causes and so it is more helpful for every society in general to work hand in
hand.

Global Warming Effects.

No matter what we do, global warming is going to have some effect on

Earth. Here are the 5 deadliest effects of global warming.

1.Spread of disease (This happens practicly because of migration, which

refers to directed, regular, or systematic movement of a group of people).

2.Warmer waters and more hurricanes (As the temperature of oceans

rises, so will the probability of more frequent and stronger hurricanes. We
saw in this in 2004 and 2005).

3. Increased probability and intensity of droughts and heat waves.

4. Polar ice caps melting (glaciers are a large sheet of ice that move very,
very slowly. Many glaciers in the world are now melting. For example,
glaciers are melting in Montana's Glacier National Park)

In the 14th century, Europeans lived through what is known as the "Little Ice
Age." The Little Ice Age lasted for several hundred years. During the Little
Ice Age, the advance of glaciers along with hard winters and famines caused
some people to starve and others to leave their homes.

Global Warming Reduction:

1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle:
Do your part to reduce waste by choosing reusable
products instead of disposables. Buying products with minimal
packaging (including the economy size when that makes sense for
you) will help to reduce waste. And whenever you can, recycle paper,
plastic, newspaper, glass and aluminum cans. If there isn't a recycling
program at your workplace, school, or in your community, ask about
starting one. By recycling half of your household waste, you can save
2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.
2. Efficient use of heat and air conditioning:
Adding insulation to your walls and attic, and installing weather
stripping or caulking around doors and windows can lower your
heating costs more than 25 percent, by reducing the amount of energy
you need to heat and cool your home.
Turn down the heat while you're sleeping at night or away during the
day, and keep temperatures moderate at all times. Setting your
thermostat just 2 degrees lower in winter and higher in summer could
save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide each year.

3. Change a Light Bulb:

Wherever practical, replace regular light bulbs with compact
fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. Replacing just one 60-watt incandescent
light bulb with a CFL will save you $30 over the life of the bulb. CFLs
also last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs, use two-thirds less
energy, and give off 70 percent less heat.
If every family replaced one regular light bulb with a CFL, it would
eliminate 90 billion pounds of greenhouse gases, the same as taking
7.5 million cars off the road.

4. Drive Less and Drive Smart:

Less driving means fewer emissions. Besides saving
gasoline, walking and biking are great forms of exercise. Explore your
community mass transit system, and check out options for carpooling
to work or school.
When you do drive, make sure your car is running efficiently. For
example, keeping your tires properly inflated can improve your gas
mileage by more than 3 percent. Every gallon of gas you save not only
helps your budget, it also keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of
the atmosphere.

5. Buy Energy-Efficient Products:

When it's time to buy a new car, choose one that offers
good gas mileage. Home appliances now come in a range of energy-
efficient models, and compact florescent bulbs are designed to provide
more natural-looking light while using far less energy than standard
light bulbs.
Avoid products that come with excess packaging, especially molded
plastic and other packaging that can't be recycled. If you reduce your
household garbage by 10 percent, you can save 1,200 pounds of
carbon dioxide annually.

6. Use Less Hot Water:

Set your water heater at 120 degrees to save energy, and
wrap it in an insulating blanket if it is more than 5 years old. Buy low-
flow showerheads to save hot water and about 350 pounds of carbon
dioxide yearly. Wash your clothes in warm or cold water to reduce
your use of hot water and the energy required to produce it. That
change alone can save at least 500 pounds of carbon dioxide annually
in most households. Use the energy-saving settings on your
dishwasher and let the dishes air-dry.

7.Plant trees:
If you have the means to plant a tree, start digging. During
photosynthesis, trees and other plants absorb carbon dioxide and give
off oxygen. They are an integral part of the natural atmospheric
exchange cycle here on Earth, but there are too few of them to fully
counter the increases in carbon dioxide caused by automobile traffic,
manufacturing and other human activities. A single tree will absorb
approximately one ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime.

9. Get a Report Card from Your Utility Company:

Many utility companies provide free home energy audits to
help consumers identify areas in their homes that may not be energy
efficient. In addition, many utility companies offer rebate programs to
help pay for the cost of energy-efficient upgrades.

10. Encourage Others to Conserve:

Share information about recycling and energy conservation
with your friends, neighbors and co-workers, and take opportunities to
encourage public officials to establish programs and policies that are
good for the environment.
These 10 steps will take you a long way toward reducing your energy
use and your monthly budget. And less energy use means less
dependence on the fossil fuels that create greenhouse gases and
contribute to global warming.

Conclusion:
Scientists all over the world are making predictions about the ill effects of
Global warming and connecting some of the events that have taken place in
the pat few decades as an alarm of global warming. The effect of global
warming is increasing the average temperature of the earth. A rise in earth’s
temperatures can in turn root to other alterations in the ecology, including an
increasing sea level and modifying the quantity and pattern of rainfall. These
modifications may boost the occurrence and concentration of severe climate
events, such as floods, famines, heat waves, tornados, and twisters. Other
consequences may comprise of higher or lower agricultural outputs, glacier
melting, lesser summer stream flows, genus extinctions and rise in the ranges
of disease vectors. As an effect of global warming species like golden toad,
harlequin frog of Costa Rica has already become extinct. There are number of
species that have a threat of disappearing soon as an effect of global warming.
As an effect of global warming various new diseases have emerged lately.
These diseases are occurring frequently due to the increase in earths average
temperature since the bacteria can survive better in elevated temperatures
and even multiplies faster when the conditions are favorable. The global
warming is expected to cause irreversible changes in the ecosystem and the
behavior of animals.
The scientists tell us that the tundra is in danger of melting holds an amount of
extra global warming pollution that is equivalent to the net amount that is
previously in the earth's atmosphere. It is not easy to attach any particular
events to global warming, but studies prove the fact that human activities are
increasing the earth’s temperature. Even though most predictions focus on the
epoch up to 2100, even if no further greenhouse gases were discharged after
this date, global warming and sea level would be likely to go on to rise for
more than a millennium, since carbon dioxide has a long average atmospheric
life span.
Now its our duty to save this Earth from the above catostrofies.

REASON TO CHOOSE THIS TOPIC:

The average facade temperature of the globe has augmented more

than 1 degree Fahrenheit since 1900 and the speed of warming has been almost
three folds the century long average since 1970.

Polar ice is melting, due to which greenhouse effect is increasing causing

glabal warming.Temperature rise of 3 degrees in every coming year is being
estimated by scientists.
CURRENT STATUS OF INDIA: New Delhi (capital) has recorded highest of 45.3
degrre celcius in the month of april, breaking 30 years record.

So its our concern to save our future from changing view of climate and make
this earth a wonderful and save place to live.
