Welcome to Ansoft Designer Training Manual

• What is Ansoft Designer?

– Ansoft Designer® is a suite of design tools to fully integrate high-frequency, physics-based electromagnetic simulation,
modeling, and automation into a seamless environment for circuit and system analysis. Whether your design challenge
is a Bluetooth® transceiver, a radar system, or an MMIC or RFIC, Designer gives you complete control over every
design task from within one simple, unified environment.

– The key to Designer’s integration is Solver on Demand™, a unique capability that orchestrates the use of multiple
solvers while still giving you complete control. Designer extends this automation and integration even further by
enabling you to rapidly import work created in other types of design software as easily as if you created it within
Designer itself.

– Designer combines several powerful simulators to support designs in multiple physical implementations.

• Ansoft Designer Applications

– Many applications are available in Designer, including various Communication Systems, High-Frequendc ICs, and
various Boards and Modules.
• Communication Systems - Designer connects communication-system architects to hardware developers with an
unparalleled baseband-through-RF design solution. With Designer, you can study complete systems in time,
frequency, or mixed-mode domain and generate and apply complex digital waveforms to arbitrary system
topologies. Flexible behavioral models or automatic co-simulation of nonlinear circuit(s) and/or electromagnetic
simulation provide solutions for initial prototyping or final design verification. Designer supports up-to-date, bit-
accurate, and user-configurable 3G waveforms,including 3GPP, WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, and IEEE 802.11 a and b.
• High-Frequency ICs - Designer teams advanced, high-frequency circuit simulation and electromagnetic modeling
with an automated design environment for RFIC and MMIC product development. The fully integrated solvers
embed IC structures that affect high-frequency operations directly into the overall circuit or system simulation.
Designer detects parasitic behavior, such as substrate coupling and chippackageboard interactions that impede
efforts to shrink die sizes. Consequently, MMIC and RFIC designers can reduce die sizes or apply advanced
structures, including flip-chip technology and ball-grid array (BGA) interconnects, to new or existing designs
without sacrificing their understanding of overall behavior.
• Boards and Modules - Designer’s virtual modeling capability makes utilizing high-density PCBs in next-
generation base stations or WLAN modules easier. Designer allows you to explore new materials, such as Low
Temperature Co-fired Ceramic (LTCC), or advanced board-manufacturing techniques without the cost of building
prototypes. Designer’s customizable vendor parts libraries and extensive electromagnetic solvers enable you to
truly understand the performance of circuits and subsystems of boards and modules, including surface mount
(SMD/SMT), chip-on-board, flip-chip, BGA, and/or chip-scale-package components.

Introduction
Ansoft Designer/Nexxim – User Guide
Welcome to Ansoft Designer Training Manual

• Multiple Solvers
– Designer combines several powerful simulators to support designs in multiple physical implementations.
• The Nexxim Simulator
• The Planar Em Simulator
• The System Simulator
• Cosimulation of Designs

– The Nexxim Simulator - Nexxim® is Ansoft’s state-of-the-art circuit simulator for RF, analog, and mixed-signal
designs. Nexxim combines transistor-level simulation accuracy, high execution speed, and robust capability to handle
circuits with thousands of active and passive elements. Nexxim simulates in all three domains — DC, time, and
frequency — from the same set of device models. Nexxim offers the following simulation tools:
• DC analysis calculates the circuit’s DC operating point and is the basis for other analyses.
• Transient analysis calculates the time-domain behavior of the circuit. Nexxim transient analysis incorporates a
new, Ansoft-proprietary variable time-step integration formula and advanced error estimation and control. The
analysis can include S-parameter input data files for accurate analysis in the time domain.
• Harmonic balance analysis calculates the frequency-domain responses of the circuit. Nexxim harmonic balance
performs single-tone and multi-tone analysis that combines Krylov subspace methods with Ansoft-proprietary
preconditioning algorithms to achieve fast convergence.
• Small-signal analyses (AC, linear network, DC noise) are based on the DC solution. Nexxim’s proprietary linear
system solver is optimized for circuit simulation, and produces accurate answers without compromising speed.
Nexxim also supports small-signal frequency analysis based on harmonic balance.
• Nexxim provides a wide range of active, passive, and distributed device models. In addition to the classic variable
sweeps of temperature, voltage, and current, Nexxim allows you to perform sweeps of any model or parameter in
a circuit. Nexxim also supports both schematic and netlist circuit implementations. In addition, the Nexxim netlist
format is HSPICE™-compatible, so any industrystandard system-design netlist can be easily imported for
analysis.

• Multiple Solvers (Continued)

– The Planar EM Simulator - Designer offers a planar electromagnetic simulator that characterizes full-wave and
radiative effects for multi-layered structures. The Planar EM simulator enables you to compute and view the following:
• Characteristic port impedances and propagation constants.
• Generalized S-parameters, and S-parameters renormalized to specific port impedances.
• Basic electromagnetic field quantities.
• Radiated electric fields.
• You draw the traces for each layer, specify each layer’s material characteristics, and identify sources and vias.
The simulator then generates the necessary current solutions and associated port characteristics and S-
parameters.
• Designer’s Planar EM simulator is applicable for multi-layer structures in microwave and millimeter-wave
integrated circuits and planar antennas. These structures may be modeled with an unlimited number of substrate
layers, metal layers, and infinite ground plane layers. You can build your configuration by stacking the three
different types of layers.
• As you set up the problem, you specify whether to solve the problem at one specific frequency or at several
frequencies within a range.
• The planar EM simulator features a number of design verification tools, including electric rule checking.

• Multiple Solvers (Continued)

– The System Simulator - Designer’s System Simulator is a frequency-domain and discrete-time simulator that uses a
highly intuitive design environment. The System Simulator is designed with an easy-to-use graphical and schematic
interface, and is capable of addressing a variety of complex DSP, RF, and wireless microwave design applications.
• The integration of system analysis into Designer’s desktop enables users to perform system simulations and
analyses using a highly intuitive interface that includes schematic entry, report generation, and graphical display.
• The simulation environment enables designers to include a higher level of detail in designs by co-simulating with
Designer’s circuit and planar EM simulators. The Designer System Simulator supports two kinds of fundamental
analysis:
– Frequency-domain analysis for single tone and multi-tone analysis of linear and nonlinear electrical systems.
– Discrete-time analysis for the simulation of functional and mixed-mode communication systems (functional
and electrical).

– Cosimulation of Designs - Designs can be easily exported from one Designer simulator to another. For example, you
can use the Planar EM simulator to verify the layout of a Nexxim circuit design.
• In addition, designs can be shared among Ansoft’s High-Frequency System Simulator (HFSS®) and Ansoft’s Q3D
quasi-static parasitic extractor.
• Designer’s unique Solver on Demand technology allows flexible and highly accurate modeling and verification of
unrestricted structures used in high-frequency component, circuit, and system designs. The technology allows you
to simulate structures via circuit and system models or with a variety of Ansoft electromagnetic solvers at the
touch of a button. Solver on Demand incorporates
– Electromagnetic-solver results directly into larger network topologies. Solution data is cached and used in
place of re-simulating unless you change structure parameters. Solver on Demand allows you to maximize
your productivity through speed and accuracy.
