Introduction
Ansoft Designer/Nexxim – User Guide
Welcome to Ansoft Designer Training Manual
– The key to Designer’s integration is Solver on Demand™, a unique capability that orchestrates the use of multiple
solvers while still giving you complete control. Designer extends this automation and integration even further by
enabling you to rapidly import work created in other types of design software as easily as if you created it within
Designer itself.
– Designer combines several powerful simulators to support designs in multiple physical implementations.

• Cosimulation of Designs
– The Nexxim Simulator - Nexxim® is Ansoft’s state-of-the-art circuit simulator for RF, analog, and mixed-signal
designs. Nexxim combines transistor-level simulation accuracy, high execution speed, and robust capability to handle
circuits with thousands of active and passive elements. Nexxim simulates in all three domains — DC, time, and
frequency — from the same set of device models. Nexxim offers the following simulation tools:
• DC analysis calculates the circuit’s DC operating point and is the basis for other analyses.
• Transient analysis calculates the time-domain behavior of the circuit. Nexxim transient analysis incorporates a
new, Ansoft-proprietary variable time-step integration formula and advanced error estimation and control. The
analysis can include S-parameter input data files for accurate analysis in the time domain.
• Harmonic balance analysis calculates the frequency-domain responses of the circuit. Nexxim harmonic balance
performs single-tone and multi-tone analysis that combines Krylov subspace methods with Ansoft-proprietary
preconditioning algorithms to achieve fast convergence.
• Small-signal analyses (AC, linear network, DC noise) are based on the DC solution. Nexxim’s proprietary linear
system solver is optimized for circuit simulation, and produces accurate answers without compromising speed.
Nexxim also supports small-signal frequency analysis based on harmonic balance.
• Nexxim provides a wide range of active, passive, and distributed device models. In addition to the classic variable
sweeps of temperature, voltage, and current, Nexxim allows you to perform sweeps of any model or parameter in
a circuit. Nexxim also supports both schematic and netlist circuit implementations. In addition, the Nexxim netlist
format is HSPICE™-compatible, so any industrystandard system-design netlist can be easily imported for
analysis.
– Cosimulation of Designs - Designs can be easily exported from one Designer simulator to another. For example, you
can use the Planar EM simulator to verify the layout of a Nexxim circuit design.
• In addition, designs can be shared among Ansoft’s High-Frequency System Simulator (HFSS®) and Ansoft’s Q3D
quasi-static parasitic extractor.
• Designer’s unique Solver on Demand technology allows flexible and highly accurate modeling and verification of
unrestricted structures used in high-frequency component, circuit, and system designs. The technology allows you
to simulate structures via circuit and system models or with a variety of Ansoft electromagnetic solvers at the
touch of a button. Solver on Demand incorporates
– Electromagnetic-solver results directly into larger network topologies. Solution data is cached and used in
place of re-simulating unless you change structure parameters. Solver on Demand allows you to maximize
your productivity through speed and accuracy.
• System Requirements
– For up-to-date information, refer to the Designer Installation Guide
NOTE: You should make backup copies of all Designer projects created
with a previous version of the software before opening them in Designer v4
• WebUpdate
– This feature allows you to update any existing Ansoft software from the WebUpdate window. This feature automatically
scans your system to find any Ansoft software, and then allows you to download any updates if they are available.
• Getting Help
– If you have any questions while you are using Ansoft Designer you can find answers in several ways:
• Ansoft Designer Online Help provides assistance while you are working.
– To get help about a specific, active dialog box, click the Help button in the dialog box or press the F1 key.
– Select the menu item Help > Contents to access the online help system.
– Tooltips are available to provide information about tools on the toolbars or dialog boxes. When you hold the
pointer over a tool for a brief time, a tooltip appears to display the name of the tool.
– As you move the pointer over a tool or click a menu item, the Status Bar at the bottom of the Ansoft Designer
window provides a brief description of the function of the tool or menu item.
– The Ansoft Designer Getting Started guide provides detailed information about using Ansoft Designer.
• Ansoft Technical Support
– To contact Ansoft technical support staff in your geographical area, please log on to the Ansoft corporate
website, www.ansoft.com and select Contact.
• Your Ansoft sales engineer may also be contacted in order to obtain this information.

Schematic/Layout Training Manual
• Synchronized Schematic/Layout
– Ansoft Designer provides One to One Component Correspondence between Schematic and Layout. Users can
work/edit components in Layout or schematic to suit preference. Components placed in the schematic automatically
appear in Layout and vice-versa.
• Solver on Demand
– The Desktop is common to Nexxim , Planar EM and System. Co-Simulation between Nexxim, System, Planar, HFSS,
Q3D & SIwave allows the inclusion of models at different levels of accuracy/abstraction on the same schematic. It also
allows for the use of multiple solver technologies through Ansoft’s Solver On Demand.

• Design Windows
– In the Ansoft Designer Desktop, each project can have multiple designs and each design is displayed in a separate
window.
– You can have multiple projects and design windows open at the same time. Also, you can have multiple views of the
same design visible at the same time.
– To arrange the windows, you can drag them by the title bar, and resize them by dragging a corner or border. Also, you
can select one of the following menu options: Window >Cascade, Window >Tile Vertically, or Window > Tile
Horizontally.
– To organize your Ansoft Designer window, you can iconize open designs. Click the Iconize symbol in the upper right
corner of the document border. An icon appears in the lower part of the Ansoft Designer window. If the icon is not
visible, it may be behind another open document. Resize any open documents as necessary. Select the menu item
Window > Arrange Icons to arrange them at the bottom of the Ansoft Designer window.
– Select the menu item Window > Close All to close all open design. You are prompted to Save unsaved designs.

Toolbars Training Manual
• Toolbars
– The toolbar buttons are shortcuts for frequently used commands. Most of the available toolbars are displayed in this
illustration of the Ansoft Designer initial screen, but your Ansoft Designer window probably will not be arranged this
way. You can customize your toolbar display in a way that is convenient for you.
– Some toolbars are always displayed; other toolbars display automatically when you select a document of the related
type. For example, when you select a 2D report from the project tree, the 2D report toolbar displays.
