Horsin Around

Objective: Students will determine the order of horses in the rodeo parade by using clues. Materials: Horse Page Markers (red, yellow, blue and green) Horse Markers Page Construction paper (red, yellow, blue and green) Clue Cards Small baggies Pocket chart (optional) Preparation: ! Run copies of the horse page. ! Color each horse a different color (red, yellow, blue and green) using markers. ! Run Horse Markers page- one on red, one on yellow, one on blue and one on green construction paper; cut apart, and store in baggies by color Procedure: 1. Discuss the rodeo and allow students to share prior experiences and knowledge. 2. Explain how the class is going to help you determine the order the horses will go in the rodeo parade. They will use clues and logical thinking to determine the correct order. 3. Place the red, yellow, and blue horse in a pocket card, Elmo, or on the board. 4. Read the Problem #1 clues on the Clues for Three Horses card. Allow students to discuss what information is gathered from the clue and arrange the horses accordingly.

5. Read the second clue and adjust position of horses if necessary. 6. When finished, discuss the method used for arriving at the solution. 7. Continue as a whole group activity, as necessary, with other clues. 8. When ready, place a group of the different colored horse markers at each table for students to share. 9. Read aloud the clues from the Four Horses clue cards while students or partners arrange the horses in the correct order according to the clues. 10. After all the clues have been read, go back and have students share their solutions. Discuss the methods they used for arriving at those solutions, and address any discrepancies.
