Philippos Schleswig-Holstein Soenderburg-Glucksburg was born on a dining room table on the Greek island of Corfu on June 10, 1921, the fth child and only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg. 1928-39 Philip was educated in UK, rst at Cheam then at Gordonstoun, a tough school in Scotland.

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, and Queen Elizabeth's husband, turns 90 today. He is mostly seen as a quiet and loyal presence in the shadows of the Queen, but he has come to make his own mark by some of the comments he has let slip over the years.

Prince Philip and Princess Elizabeth (his third cousing, both having Queen Victoria as a great-great-grandmother) met for the rst time at the wedding of Prince Philip's cousin, Princess Marina of Greece, to The Duke of Kent, who was an uncle of Princess Elizabeth. He was 18, she was 13.

Joined the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth as a cadet. He graduated top of his class and quickly rose through the ranks. At the almost unprecedentedly young age of 21, he was appointed rst lieutenant (second in command) of the destroyer HMS Wallace, which took part in the Allied landings at Sicily.
