Good Pictures and objects associated with Spring: flowers, holidays, clothing items, activities, weather Plastic baggies of at least three of each of the pictures and/or objects Spring Fever Graph Sheet Spring Fever Web Quest Spring Fever Pic-A-Hole

Materials and Instructional Aides

Introductory Activities
Read book That's What Happens When It's Spring! By Elaine W. Good Discuss the various things the child in the story saw, heard, felt and did during Spring. Teacher will explain that during spring, there are lots of changes around them. The weather can be sunny, hot, rainy, windy, and cloudy People go to the park, go on walks, go watch a baseball game, play games outside, ride bikes The holidays some celebrate are Passover, Easter, and Memorial Day Light jackets, t-shirts, skirts, jeans, are some clothes people wear. Teacher will ask students what activities they like to do during spring and what do they usually wear.

Instructional Procedure
Teacher will hold up a baggie of the different pictures and objects Explain that these things can be sorted (separated) according to different categories (groups) Teacher will make graph on white board with different categories and count how many of each item goes with the category Teacher will explain how to make a graph with the X and Y axis

Instructional Procedure (cont.)

Teacher will then will create different math sentences to work on addition skills: Flowers + weather Activities + clothes Holidays + weather Clothes + flowers Students will work in pairs and make a graph with their packet Once graph is complete, students will write different addition sentences, and are encouraged to create their own sentences

Culminating Activities
Students discuss their graph and explain which category they had more of, and some sample addition sentences Journal Entry: I know its Spring Time when

Summer, Summer, Summer Time!!

Goal:
Understand the Concept of Summer Use Units of Measurement (inches) Create a Chart

Objective:

Students will state various characteristics associated with Summer (i.e. clothing items, activities, weather changes, and holidays) Students will be able to measure various items Students will be able to create a chart

Academic Standards:

S3.c - Demonstrates understanding of changes in Earth and sky. M2.i - Select and use units for estimating and measuring quantities. M4.a - Collect and organize data to answer a question.

Prerequisites

Various beach towels Suns in different sizes Poster of different waves Picnic food Summer clothing items Ruler Summer Time Web Quest Summer Time Floor Game

Materials and Instructional Aides

Introductory Activities
Teacher will begin by telling the students that she is going on vacation. I am going on vacation and I need help packing my suitcase and deciding what to dowho wants to help? Students will raise their hands, teacher calls on one, {name} Im going somewhere that is sunny and hot. What should I bring to where? Student will give a suggestion on what to wear, teacher will continue to call on other students to answer the same sentence. (ex shorts, t-shirt, sandals, sunglasses) Where can I go that is sunny and hot? Students will give answers (ex beach, park, pool, etc.) So Im at {location}. What can I do once Im there? students again will answer question. All answers are written on the white board. Explain to the students that everything they listed are associated with the season of summer. In the summer there are lots of activities to do and places to go.

Instructional Procedure
I have in my basket different pictures and objects and pictures that are associated with summer. I want to know how big each object or picture is. To do that, I am going to use a ruler. Who wants to pick the first object? Student will select an object from the basket and teacher will use the ruler to measure the object and show the students how each object should be measured. Today we are going to practice how to measure with a ruler. On each group table there is a basket full of different pictures and objects. With your members you are going to measure all the objects and write them down. When you are done, you are going to create a chart and put the objects in order from the smallest to the largest. Teacher also has written directions on each group table as well as a chart sheet.

Culminating Activities
Students discuss which of their items is the largest and which is the smallest Teacher call on students to measure different items in front of the class Journal Entry: My Dream Vacation is

Goal:

Nice Trip, See You Next Fall!!

Understand the Concept of Fall Create a Graph

Objective:

Students will state various characteristics associated with Fall (i.e. clothing items, activities, weather changes, and holidays) Students will be able to create a graph Students will be able to analyze and interpret data based on the graph

Academic Standards:

S3.c - Demonstrates understanding of changes in Earth and sky. M4.a - Collect and organize data to answer a question.

Prerequisites
Students know how to sort items according to categories Students know various items of clothing, activities, weather, and holidays Students have a basic understanding on how to create a graph

Leaves of different autumn colors Large poster Markers Baskets See You Next Fall Web Quest See You Next Fall Flip Chute

Materials and Instructional Aides

Introductory Activities
Teacher will begin by asking a question, Who likes to jump into a pile of leaves? students will raise hand Think back to when you jumped into a pile of leaves. What were you wearing? teacher will call on students If you werent jumping into a pile of leaves, what else could you have been doing? teacher will call on students Was is warm or chilly outside? teacher will call on students What holiday would you celebrate? Halloween Explain to the students that everything they listed are associated with the season of fall. For those of you who likes to jump into leaves, today is your lucky day

Instructional Procedure
Ive got a small pile of leaves in front of me. What colors are the leaves? teacher will call on students and answer while teacher writes the colors on the board. Now that we know what color the leaves are, I want to know how many of each color leaf I have. How do I do that? Teacher will call on different students to answer. Students answers should show that they have an understand of how to sort objects according to a certain characteristic. Teacher will sort the leaves into different colored piles and call on a different student to count the leaves in each group whichever way theyd like

Instructional Procedure
Teacher will make a chart using the colors and write in the number each student counted. According to this chart, I have {make various analyses according to the chart} In the corner of the room there is a large pile of leaves. Each group will go to the pile and grab a handful of leaves. Grabbing a handful means grabbing as many leaves as they can with their hands. Teacher will explain that the students have to sort the leaves by color then create a graph using the information they have about the leaves.

Culminating Activities
Teacher call on students to interpret their graph Journal Entry: My favorite Fall Time activity is

The Jacket I Wear In The Snow by: Shirley Neitzel White circles of different sizes (used to put together a snowman) Ruler Pencil Paper to make chart Markers/crayons

Materials and Instructional Aides

Introductory Activities
Teacher will read book, The Jacket I Wear In The Snow by: Shirley Neitzel Before reading the book, teacher will review what an author, illustrator, and title is. After story, teacher will discuss the different articles of clothing that the child wore. Teacher will ask why did the child wear so many clothes and get into a discussion about weather Teacher will then ask about what the child was doing in the snow and what else they could do in the snow Teacher will explain that they are talking about the winter and have a discussion.

Instructional Procedure
Who likes to build a snow man? students will raise their hands Ive got different sized circles to make my own snow man. First Ill put down the legs. I want to know how tall the legs are. How do I do that? students will answer with the understanding that the teacher will have to measure it Teacher will measure the legs and write it in the circle. She repeats with the body and head. How do I know how tall my snow man is? students will answer that they have to add all three circles. I have three numbers to add. How do I do that? students will respond with adding the two numbers then adding the answer with the third number.

Instructional Procedure
On each group table there are circles in different sizes, a ruler and an activity sheet. As a group you will decide who is the builder, the measurer, the recorder, and the adder. You will measure three different circles and write them in each circle of your activity sheet. The adder will then add up the circles to figure out how tall the snow man is. You will make three different snow men and put them in order from the shortest to the tallest. Dont forget, this is your snow man, so you can make it which ever way you want. Teacher also has written directions on each table

Culminating Activities
Teacher will call on students to talk about their different snow men and how they measured each circle. Journal Entry: If I were a snow man, where would I go and what would I do?
