ELASTOMER BELLOWS SEAL

Applications
Type 1 seals are specified in more original equipment than any other seal from any manufacturer. They have the highest success rate of any seal of their type, and are suitable for a wide range of service conditions: from water to steam to chemicals and corrosive materials.

Temperatures: - 40C to + 205C/ - 40F to + 400F (depending on materials used) Pressures: 1: 29 bar g/ 425 psig 1B: 82 bar g/ 1200 psig See Chart 8 for speed requirements

For use in pumps, mixers, blenders, agitators, refrigeration compressors, blowers, fans and other rotary shaft equipment. For pulp and paper, petrochemical, food processing, wastewater treatment, chemical processing, power generation and other demanding applications. Both Type 1 and 1B can be repaired in the field to minimize replacement cost, downtime and lost revenue.

Design Features
Mechanical Drive The drive bands notch design eliminates over-stressing of the elastomer bellows. Bellows slip is eliminated. The shaft and sleeve are protected from wear. Self-Aligning Automatic adjustment compensates for abnormal shaft end play run out, primary ring wear and equipment tolerances. Special Balancing For higher pressure applications, greater operating speeds and less wear.

Non-Clogging, Single Coil Spring Provides greater dependability than multiple spring designs. Will not be affected by build-up of solids.

Low Drive Torque The design of the seal and material selection creates a low level of breakout torque which improves performance and reliability for fractional horsepower motors.

To determine the maximum pressure for the size of Type 1 or 1B Seal required, multiply the maximum pressure from Charts 3A and 3B by the factors in Chart 4 to obtain the maximum operating pressure. 1. Lubricating liquid is defined as having lubricating properties of gasoline or better. Non-lubricating liquid is defined as having lubricating properties of water or worse. 2. Pressure capabilities to 83 bar g/1200 psig are based on lubricating oil service, carbon vs. silicon carbide, and high pressure mating ring support.

Chart 4. Multiplier Factors

Selection Considerations Speed Sealed Fluid Temperature Up to 3600 rpm Above 3600 rpm Below 79C/175F Above 79C to 121C/175F to 250F Above 121C to 177C/250F to 350F Above 177C/350F Multiplier Factor x 1.00 Example for Determining PV Limits: Seal: 76 mm/3 inches diameter Type 1B Product: Water Face material: Carbon vs. Ceramic Temperature: 93C/200F Shaft speed: 1800 rpm Using Chart 3B, the maximum pressure would be 440 psig/30 bar g. From table of multipliers (Chart 4), apply the multipliers for the specific service requirements to determine the maximum operating pressure for this application. 600 x 1 x .67 x 1 = 402 psig/28 bar g The maximum operating pressure of this 2 inch Type 1B seal is 396 psig. 440 x 0.9 = 396 psig/27 bar g

**
x 1.00 x 0.90 x 0.80 x 0.65

** Multiplier = 3600/new speed Example: If new speed = 4000 rpm, Multiplier = 3600/4000 = .90
