RECS RaDonal and CCS Workforce Challenges

CCS has an ambiDous growth path with enormous global deployment and human capital needs. However, CCS workforce and insDtuDonal capacity is relaDvely small. Energy execu3ves worldwide consistently cite the shortage of scien3c and engineering talent among the industrys most serious challenges. CCS deployment needs compound pressing workforce challenges. CCS deployment requires skills at all levels and across sectors and disciplines (e.g., technical, project management, nancial, educa3on, regulatory, emissions trading, etc.). Before RECS, there were no interdisciplinary CCS educa3on / training opportuni3es, hands-on eld experiences or CCS career network plaXorms. 3

RECS Mission and Background

RECS fosters and advances educaDon, scienDc research, professional training and career networks for graduate students and young professionals in the CCS eld. Founded in 2004, as the worlds rst interdisciplinary, intensive CCS summer program, RECS is the premier U.S. CCS educa3on and training experience with global recogni3on. Background Technical collabora3on with the U.S. DOE Regional Carbon Sequestra3on Partnerships and na3onal labs. Faculty comprised of leading U.S. scien3sts, researchers and industry leaders and RECS alumni serve as mentors. Selec3on of 30 graduate students and early career professionals with diverse backgrounds (geology, chemistry, engineering, business, law, social sciences, etc.). Par3cipants mainly from U.S. with 3-5 interna3onal selec3ons. (Received 136 applica3ons in 2011.) Primary sponsorship from U.S. DOE, Oce of Fossil Energy and Na3onal Energy Technology Laboratory. Corporate sponsors have included ALSTOM, American Electric Power, American Coali3on for Clean Coal Electricity.

RECS Approach and Program Elements

InteracDve approach that combines classroom instrucDon with group exercises, industrial plant visits and hands-on eld acDviDes. Classroom instruc3on with interac3ve group exercises (i.e. climate change stabiliza3on game, modeling uid ow in subsurface, discussion teams, public engagement and communica3ons coaching, CCS deployment game, technology commercializa3on strategies, etc). Geology eld tour, fracture mapping exercise and core and well log analysis to visualize and enhance understanding of storage characteriza3on. Discussion of natural analogues. Power plant visit, opera3ons and capture integra3on discussions. Geologic storage test site visit with hands-on eld ac3vi3es (i.e. soil gas sampling, tracer sorbent sampling, CO2 sensor calibra3on, CO2 ux measurements, etc.). Industrial site tours such as McElmo Dome, Praxair CO2 produc3on facility.
