Introduction
This book came about as a result of my awareness of a need for some clear, basic information about Home Water Filters. You see, I am a Master Plumber. In the past few years I have had more and more clients asking about water filters. As I started learning about water filtration, so I could make sure I did the best job for my clients, I found out the information was often confusing or even contradictory. If you do an Internet search for Water Filters, almost every result is from someone selling or promoting some specific brand or system. It is very hard to find any unbiased information. So, since I needed to do the research anyway for my own business, I thought it would be helpful to share what I learned so more families can benefit from my research.

As I write this, the United States, and indeed the whole world, is in the midst of an economic crisis that has seen double digit unemployment, record fuel prices and the highest rate of foreclosures ever experienced. But Americans are still spending billions per year on bottled water. Why would we spend so much money for something that can be had for almost free right from the tap? Because more and more people are beginning to realize that the water we drink can play a big part in our health. It is estimated that as many as 50% or greater of US homes use some type of water filter for their drinking water. The home water filter industry is billions of dollars strong and growing. Any time there are that many dollars at stake there is bound to be a lot of hype, and the water filter industry is no exception.

This book will help you learn why you need a water filter and how to choose the right one without spending more than you need to. In Chapters 1-4, youll learn about common tap water contaminants and why bottled water is really not a good solution to the problem.
Then, in Chapters 5-8, youll get the facts on the most common types of Home Water Filter Systems and the pros and cons of each. Chapter 9 is a guide to the best way to remove many of the most common specific contaminants. Finally, there is a resource guide at the end with recommended products and websites. It is my sincere goal that this book really helps you cut through the confusion and marketing hype so you can choose the best

Ok, its not earthshaking news that clean, pure water is pretty important. You probably learned in school that the human body is about 70% water. You probably also know that you can go for weeks without food and survive, but just a few days without water will kill you. So water is definitely one of the basic necessities of life.
What you may not know is just how important it is to make sure the water you drink and bathe in is free from harmful substances that can actually hurt you. You may think because you live in an industrialized country with water treatment plants that you are OK, but that may not be the case.

Now, Im not trying to discredit all the effort that goes into providing safe drinking water. It is certainly true that the water in most developed nations is way safer than in lots of so called third world countries. In fact, around 12% of the worlds population (almost 900 million people) does not have a dependable, safe source of water for drinking or hygiene. In fact, unsafe water is one of the leading causes of death and disease worldwide, with over 750,000 deaths annually from water related diseases.
So, public water treatment has had a big part to play in lowering mortality rates and improving health over the years. But there are still issues with the quality of water from these treatment facilities. In the next chapter you will learn a little more about just what to be aware of to protect your family.

In this chapter you are going to find out why it is a good idea to use some kind of water filter, even if you live in an area with municipally treated water. But whats the problem with tap water? If you are like me you were raised on city water and you are OK, right? The best way I have ever heard it put was from an instructor in a class I attended on water quality. He said it like this: Municipal water treatment is designed to produce water that wont kill you right now. The truth is that some of the chemicals and processes they have to use to make the water at least drinkable can have some pretty bad long term effects in the human body. Did you know that is 2005, the non-profit Environmental Working Group tested tap water in 42 states and found around 260 contaminants, including at least 140

unregulated chemicals that did not even have public safety standards or any approved way to remove them. The EPA was blamed for part of this problem by failing to create safety standards for many agricultural and industrial chemicals that can find their way into water supply. As another example, for several years it has been common knowledge that pharmaceuticals are present in tap water in many US cities. A 2008 AP investigation determined that as least 46 million Americans are drinking water contaminated with pharmaceuticals and a 2002 US Geological Survey study found that 80% of US streams were contaminated with pharmaceuticals. If that isnt enough to get your attention, the next chapter goes into more detail about some of the possible contaminants in your tap water and why you should be concerned.
