BUDVA its first ready to host

Class 1 Grand Prix

VICTORY 1 Former Champion

Mohammed Al Marri to replace injured World Champion Arif Al Zafeen

May 2008 n. 3

May 2008 n. 3

s the picturesque resort of Budva, one of the oldest and most historic Cities on the Adriatic Sea, prepares to host this weekends Hypo Group Montenegrin Grand Prix, round two of the 2008 Class 1 World Powerboat Championship and the first of four races for the Class 1 tour in Europe, the 2007 World and European Champions, Victory Team, has confirmed it will be forced to race without defending World Champion, Arif Saif Al Zafeen. Victory 1s, Al Zafeen, who won the opening Edox Pole Position and Grand Prix of the season in Qatar with Nadir Bin Hendi, is forced to sit out the race on medical advice after sustaining serious back injuries in a crash during a Formula 2 race in Egypt several weeks ago. But whilst the loss of Al Zafeen is a bitter blow for the team, Victory has been able to call on the services of former World and Middle East Champion, Mohammed Al Marri - a veteran of over 50 Grands Prix and with nine race wins and 26 podiums already to his credit - to step into the drivers seat. Victorys main championship rivals, Qatar, will see this enforced change as a possible opportunity to close the gap in the title race and to take their first win of the season, and although Sheikh Hassan and Steve Curtis will be running their

spare boat for a second consecutive race, a switch from Mercury V8s back to Skema V12 power-plants and considerable modifications to Qatar 96, may well give them the edge they need. Any outside challenge to Victory and Qatar in the race and to their early stranglehold on the top four positions in the championship standings, could well largely depend on the conditions that the teams will face in Budva, when they line up for the 23-lap, 94.50Nm Hypo Group Montenegrin Grand Prix. If the anticipated rough seas on the outside leg of the course around the Island of Sveti Nikola materialise, Foresti & Suardi, Negotiator and Jotun may well be amongst the challengers for podium positions. Giorgioffshores Nicola Giorgi and Giorgio Manuzzi will look to build on their very solid top six finish last time out and are confident of an improved showing when they line-up in Budva in only their second outing in their Michael Peters-designed Victory-hull, SeveneleveN, with the all new Spanish-outfit of Cirilli and Carrasco in Roscioli Hotels and Jerome Brardas American based team, Windmare Racing making their 2008 debuts this weekend.

01 MONTAVOCI AND SELMER CONFIDENT OF STRONG

SHOWING IN MONTENEGRO
Foresti & Suardi duo, Giampaolo Montavoci and Kolbjorn Selmer have spent the last two weeks clocking up the miles testing on Italys Lake Iseo, and are confident of a strong showing this weekend. It was important that we got as many miles in as possible to be ready for Budva, said Norwegian driver, Kolbjorn Selmer. The tests went well we tried out a new steering system and a variety of different propeller and ratio settings, and although the conditions in Montenegro are likely to be rough, unlike the flat calm of the lake the tests proved a valuable exercise for us. We made a solid start in Qatar but now we are back in the number one boat we are aiming for an even stronger showing and hoping for rough seas.

05 QATAR READY TO TAKE THE FIGHT TO VICTORY

Sheikh Hassan and Steve Curtis have an improved boat for this weekends Hypo Group Montenegrin Grand Prix and are ready to take the fight to their main rivals and championship leaders, Victory 1. Matteo and his guys have put a lot of work in to upgrade the spare boat for this race and for sure we will have more performance than in Doha, said Curtis. Sheikh Hassan and Curtis were forced into their spare boat with Mercury V8s for the opening race of the season, after a crash in qualifying wrecked their race boat but in Budva they run their favoured Skema V12 power-plants. Running our V12s will make a difference but whether or not we have enough (power) to match Victory is still questionable but if we get rough seas on the outside leg we will be in good shape. The pre-race tests have gone well, said team manager and Qatar 95 throttleman, Matteo Nicolini. Steve and Luca tested for two days and the performance (of 96) is very good. We made some hull modifications and also aerodynamic ones and Steve has worked on the boat to make his own adjustments to have a boat similar to what he has been used to in 2007.

02 MOHAMMED AL MARRI BACK IN THE DRIVING SEAT

After stepping back from competitive (Class 1) racing at the end of 2006, Mohammed Al Marri is back in the drivers seat in Montenegro, replacing the injured Arif Saif Al Zafeen in Victory 1 to partner Nadir Bin Hendi. Mohammed made his Class 1 debut in 2000, finishing runner-up in the title race, going on to win the World Championship the following year with Saeed Al Tayer. He has competed in 55 Grands Prix, winning nine, finishing on the podium a further 26 times and in 2005 won the Class 1 Middle East Championship.

06 CIRILLI AND CARRASCO READY FOR

BUDVA DEBUT
Having elected to sit-out the first race of the season, Domenico Cirilli will unveil his new all-Spanish team in Budva, with Sergio Mora Carrasco making his Class 1 debut this weekend. The team will run the Victory hull that Cirilli raced in 2007 with Scam V12 power-plants under the colours of new sponsor, Roscioli Hotels. Sergio has made a very strong impression with me, said Cirilli, a veteran of over 40 Grands Prix. He has great awareness in the boat and is very comfortable, driving at speed and in all conditions. We have put in a considerable amount of time in the boat just to get used to each other and I am already convinced that we will make a strong partnership.

03 MOSCOW TO HOST RUSSIAN GRAND PRIX

The first Class 1 Grand Prix to be held in Russias capital City, heralds the return to racing of the Worlds leading powerboat series to Russian waters for the first time in nine years. This is a significant event for the championship and we are delighted to have reached this agreement with Mr Anton Dolotin, President of Moscows Royal Yacht Club and to be allowed to run our race inside Russias capital City, the largest City in Europe., said IOTA General Secretary, Marco Sala. The staging of Moscows historic first Class 1 Powerboat Grand Prix on Sunday, 6 July, round 3 of the Class 1 World Powerboat Championship, will take place on the Khimki Reservoir, one of eight artificial lakes forming part of the Moscow Canal system which was built in 1937, linking the Moscow and Volga Rivers, but the only lake that lies within Moscows city limits.

07 RUNNING REPAIRS AND UPGRADES

Ugland Offshore Racing will be looking to kick-start its title challenge and put points on the board in Budva, after technical problem in the season opener robbed Jotun off a podium finish, and the MTI, Mercury powered raceboat has spent the last few weeks in the teams workshop in Fredrikstad in Norway undergoing a major overhaul. The time we have had between races was the perfect opportunity for us to upgrade certain areas of the boat and to make key modifications that will improve her overall performance, said team manager, Per Carsten Michelsen. We have worked on the hull and made modifications to the transmission, as well as completely rewiring the boat.

04 WINDMARE RACINGS BUDVA DEBUT

Jerome Brardas American based Windmare Racing is a second outfit to make its Class 1 debut at the Hypo Group Montenegrin Grand Prix this weekend. Brarda, who made his racing debut in Europe in the eighties before moving to the USA to compete in Superboats, and the Super Cat series, confirmed that the team will run a Tencara hull powered by Mercury-Class 1, 9litre, V8 power-plants.
