An Englishman in THRACE ...

18 months ago Ian Flaherty moved from his homeland, Englands second city Birmingham, and travelled 3000 kilometres to Krklareli to be with his partner. After the recession in the UK had left him struggling for work he decided that it was the right time for a change. On arrival to Turkey he immediately started a TESOL course with the aim to teach English. He successfully completed the course in July 2010 and is now qualified as an English teacher, one problem he did find though was the lack of good teachers and students work books. This inspired Ian to create his own general grammar teachers book as well as a students exercise book. Ian has been assisting English teachers in the city and helping the students with their English, specifically with their communication skills.

Before moving to Turkey Ian was always involved in computers and this is still where his heart lies. He taught himself many software applications and thus became successful as a systems manager, he also looked into computer hardware after being made redundant and took a job building and repairing computers and specialised in the instalment of customer specific software. Recently he has been allowed to indulge himself, once again, in his preferred trade by assisting his partner in her job. Aya URAL FLAHERTY currently works for the R&D Unit within the Education Department as a project coordinator. She is involved in projects with other countries from the EU and thus English is the chosen language, this is where Ian came in as a Volunteer Project Advisor. The majority of the projects are online and so Ian was able to use his computer skills to assist with the ICT side of the projects, also because of his newly gained teaching skills he was able to assist the students with their English in preparing their materials for the projects. One specific project which has just been completed was My Favourite Sports and Games where Ian created and edited a magazine as a grand finale so that others may see the work that the students did. This magazine is now available in three formats. A hard copy that the students can read and feel (this gives the magazine more life); an e-magazine in pdf format that can be easily sent around the world and uploaded onto web sites; and a video which can be shown at seminars (and is also free to view on youtube). This brings us to the present day ..... what lies in store for our resident Englishman next ??
