GOD'S WORDS Each day we are bombarded with thousands of words. From the moment our clock radios click on in the morning, until the last moment of the day when the television is turned off or someone bids us "good -night," our life is filled with words. Some words that we hear bring news that leaves us feeling low. Some words lift our spirits. Many of the words we hear are trying to get us to buy something. Some words are hurtful. Today the Church focuses our attention on hearing the word of God. Are God's words just more of the same--part of the endless stream of words that flow into our ears each day? The challenge today is to allow God's word to inspire us in new ways so that our outlook and attitudes align themselves more closely with the heart and mind of Christ Jesus. QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK Adults: What type of soil am I at this point in my life? What are the obstacles that may prevent me from yielding fruit? Children: If God were to plant a small seed in me would I be a good soil to let it grow?

Whats New?

Starting Monday, July 12, the English daily Mass will be at 7:00 am instead of 7:20 am. This means that Morning Prayer (from the Liturgy of the Hours) will begin at 6:40 am. As usual the Holy Rosary will be recited immediately after the daily Mass.

Almighty God, send your Holy Spirit to guide those who will advise the Holy Father in the selection of the next Bishop of the Diocese of Fresno. May he have the zeal of Saint Paul, the priestly gifts of Saint John Vianney, the wisdom of a loving father and brother, and most of all, the heart of your Son, Jesus. We ask that the Blessed Virgin Mary intercede for us, and Saint Therese, our patroness, join us in this prayer, which we make through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, shepherd of souls, who called the apostles to be fishers of men, raise up new apostles in your church. Teach them that to serve you is to reign, to possess you is to possess all things. Kindle in the young hearts of our sons and daughters the fire of zeal of souls. Make them eager to spread your kingdom upon earth. Keep our present religious and seminarians healthy, both physically and spiritually. Grant them courage to follow you, who are the Way, the Truth and the Life, who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.

The Holy Fathers July Intentions

General Intention: That Christians may contribute to alleviating the material and spiritual suffering of AIDS patients, especially in the poorest countries. Missionary Intention: For the religious who work in mission territories, that they may be witnesses of the joy of the Gospel and living signs of the love of Christ.

CHALLENGE TO CHANGE At this time of the year farmers and gardeners begin to see the fruits of all their labors. They sowed more seed than they needed, as not all survive and produce. The parable of the sower offers layers of new meaning. In Jesus' day, following the Law of Moses was said to assure abundant blessings. Jesus demonstrated that following the rules and living the life are not the same. Why does the seed of the word not bear fruit in everyone? Jesus quotes Isaiah, who describes people as dull of hearing with their eyes shut. Jesus says that if people really hear and really see, they might have to change. Do we really hear the word and allow it to take root in our lives, or do we push it to the edges or choke it? Disciples are the ones who water and nurture it, asking Jesus to help them produce abundant fruit. LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOW Where has the word of God landed in the good soil of your life, and how does it bear fruit? Where has it been choked out or lost?

Welcoming the Roman Missal (Third Edition)

Key changes to missal capture original meanings Casual observers of the Roman Catholic Church often remark that it hasnt changed in 2,000 years. Actually, just like any living institution, it is constantly changing. Over the centuries, where and when the Mass is celebrated, how saints are chosen, and the method of electing popes are some of the ways the Church has adjusted its traditions and policies. Now come changes to the Roman Missal, the book containing the prayers for the Mass. For years, the Church has been working to more accurately translate those prayers from the Latin in which the original Missal is promulgated into modern languages, including English. Msgr. Kevin Irwin, dean of the School of Theology and Religious Studies at The Catholic University of America in Washington, says those alterations were necessitated by two factors. First, the Committee charged with the English translation of the Roman Missal issued the post-Vatican II translations very quickly, he notes, referring to the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s. They realized, after a few years use of the Missal, that some translations should have been more accurate. Second, some feasts have been added to the Churchs liturgical calendar in recent years, for example, St. Padre Pios. Those Latin Masses need to be translated into English. Peter Finn, associate director of the International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL), compares the changes to the cleaning of an old painting whose images are brought to clearer light in the cleaning process. The translations have sought to achieve a suitable balance between the word-for-word, literal meaning of the Latin and the demands of good proclamation, style and intelligibility. One of the most significant changes, Msgr. Irwin says, involves the familiar phrase, And also with you, which the congregation recites after the celebrant of the Mass says, The Lord be with you. He explains that the congregation will now say, and with your spirit. This places the English translation in line with most other languages. The response is not to the person of the priest but to the Spirit of God, who ordained him to permanent service in the Church. It is an acknowledgment of the spirit and grace which is in him. Msgr. Anthony Sherman, executive director of the U.S. bishops Secretariat of Divine Worship, offers another example: Instead of saying we believe at the beginning of the Creed, Catholics will soon recite, I believe. The reason for the shift, he says, is to underline the fact that, although we share our belief together with our brothers and sisters, each one of us is called to make an individual profession of faith. All of us laity, clergy and religious will need to take time to review the changed words and come to appreciate what we may not have understood or appreciated before, he says. There are layers of meaning to liturgical texts, not just one meaning. These translations and the education we shall receive before they are implemented will offer us a chance to brush up our knowledge of the Mass and of our beliefs. Msgr. Sherman believes the changes will invite the faithful to pause and reflect on what, after so many years, we may have taken for granted. People will listen more attentively to the various prayers proclaimed by the priest and these will convey a much deeper richness, which can be the basis for meditation and prayer for the enrichment of ones spiritual life.
