Today,thecityofTaguigisoneofthe17citiesandmunicipalitiesthatmakeupMetroManila,orthe NationalCapitalRegionofthePhilippines.

Demographics: Taguigisexperiencingrapidgrowth,primarilyduetoimmigrationfromotherareasofthePhilippines. Overthelasttenyears,Taguighassustainedanannualgrowthrateof7%,muchhigherthanneighboring Makati(2%)orevenMetroManilaasawhole(3.5%).Withacomparativelylowpopulationdensity(8,000 persons/sq.km.versusManilas12,500),thereismorespaceforexpansion.Also,therelativecostofa homeinTaguigislowcomparedtoMakati. Homeownershipintaguigishigh(76%)butlotownershipiscomparativelylow(58%).28%ofresidentsare occupying,landforfree,reflectingtheoccurrenceofsquatting.Singledetachedhomescomprise69%of thehousingsupply.

ThepopulationofTaguigisyoungerandlesswelleducated,andmorelikelytobeemployedinunskilled ordailywagejobsthantheMetroManliaaverage.Unemploymentislow(9%),whilegainfulemployment ishigh(80%).Itisnotablethattheonly1%ofthetotalworkforceinTaguigisnowengagedinfarming andfishing. Geology: Taguigconsistsof2terrainunits:awesternundulatingsectionandaneasternalluvialportion,which extendsintotheLagunadeBay.[SHOWONMAP]Theundulatingtogentlyslopingterrainisunderlainby agentlydippingsequenceofpyroclasticrocks,madeupoftuffs,tuffaceoussandstones,conglomerates belongingtotheGuadalupeformation.Taguighastwomajorgeologicformations,namelytheQuaternary Alluvial(QA1)whichiscomprisedofdetritaldepositsmostlysilt,sandandgravel;andtheGuadalupe formation(GF)ofwhichtheuppermember(DilimanTuff)isthintomediumbedded,finegrained,vitric tuffsandweldedvolcanicbrecciaswithsubordinateamountsoftuffaceous,finetomediumgrained sandstone. Geomorphology: TherearefivemaintypesofsoilsfoundinTaguig: BayClayLoam,whichisdarkbrownincolorandhasfinegranuleswhichisfriablewhendry,butvery stickywhenwet;GuadalupeClayLoam,nearlyblackincolorandcoarseintexture.Itisgranulartocoddy whendry,andveryfinestickywhenwet;MarikinaClayLoam,brownandfriable;QuinquaFineSandy Loam;andUnmodifiedSoil.ThesiteischaracterizedbyGuadalupeClayLoam. Physiography: AnextensiveportionofTaguigcoveringtheformerMilitaryCampofFortBonifacio,includingthesite,is composedofundulatinglowgradedtuff.Ontheotherhand,anareaborderedbyPateros,Pasigand LagunadeBayismadeofbroadalluvialdeposits,whilethesmallestsouthwesternportiontowards Muntinlupaismainlycomposedofminoralluvialdeposits. Waterresourcescharacteristics: SurfaceWater: TaguighastwomajorriversthatfeedLagunadeBay:theTaguigRiver,andtheNapindanChannel. TheNapindanRivernormallyflowsfromLagunadeBaytothePasigRiver,butcanalsoflowinthe oppositedirection,dependingontheriveritself,thewatertableinthelake,thetidalstageinManilaBay, andtheannualevaporationfromthelake. AccordingtodatafromLagunaLakeDevelopmentAuthority(LLDA),thelakehasatotalareaof90,000 hectareswithanaveragedepthof2.8m.Aquaculturecoversaround15,000hectares,10,000forfishpens and5,000forfishcages. Groundwater: Taguigissituatedwithinagroundwaterbasincontainingseveralconnectedandinterrelatedaquifers composedoftuffaceoussandstoneandconglomeratesbelongingtotheGuadalupeFormation.Its thicknessisapproximately1,300to1,200meters. Almost2000wellshavebeendrilledintheaquifersoftheGuadalupeFormationforthecommercialand residentialuserssomeofwhichgoasdeepas300meters.Basedonafeasibiltystudyforthebulkwater supplyconductedthroughMWSSin1996,locationsofwellfieldswithinTaguigareindicatedinthefigure below.
