Highlights 2010/2011

This is a tradition that must be lived up to. And in fact, Daimler Buses sold more than 39,000 vehicles of the Mercedes-Benz, Setra, and Orion brands worldwide in 2010. With an approximately 13 % share of the global market, we were once again the undisputed Number One in the bus business last year.

Shaping Future Transportation

Sustainable Success In 2011 we will be celebrating some major anniversaries. Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler invented the automobile 125 years ago. In 1895 the first Mercedes-Benz regular-service bus began to shuttle between Siegen and Netphen. Exactly 100 years ago Karl Kssbohrer built his first bus. And 60 years ago the first bus with a unitized body was built, marking the birth of the Setra brand.

Shaping Future Transportation. CleanDrive Technologies.

Shaping Future Transportation Daimler Trucks and Daimler Buses are forging ahead with measures for significantly reducing the fuel consumption and CO2 and pollutant emissions of their vehicles. The worlds leading commercial vehicle manufacturer is consolidating these activities in its worldwide Shaping Future Transportation initiative. This initiative actively incorporates the Daimler brands Mercedes-Benz, Setra, Freightliner, Fuso, Orion, and Thomas Built Buses. Its CleanDrive Technologies play a crucial role in this endeavor, encompassing efficient, clean drive systems and alternative fuels for all vehicle classes from light vans to heavy-duty trucks. Today approximately 400,000 Daimler commercial vehicles with CleanDrive Technologies are already on the road around the world. Daimler is the global leader for green commercial vehicles, having already delivered about 15,500 vehicles employing alternative drive concepts to customers by the end of last year. Hybrid technology plays a key role in these vehicles, as it reduces diesel consumption by up to one third, depending on the application. The hybrid portfolio of Daimler Trucks and Daimler Buses is unmatched anywhere in the world, ranging from the Fuso, Freightliner, and Orion-brand hybrid buses to hybrid commercial vehicles bearing the Mercedes star. Further expansion of activities Daimler Buses delivered a total of 16 Mercedes-Benz Citaro G BlueTec Hybrid articulated buses in 2010, five of them to the Stuttgarter Straenbahnen AG (SSB) public transit company. These hybrid buses are being used in regular route service. Additional buses are operating in Hamburg, Krefeld, Mlheim/Ruhr, Rotterdam, and Milan. The Citaro G BlueTec Hybrid is to date the only hybrid bus that can cover some of a routes distance while running solely on electricity, without using the diesel engine.

The Mercedes-Benz Citaro FuelCELL Hybrid operates without generating any local emissions and with a high degree of fuel efficiency, which puts it in the forefront of the push toward sustainable mobility. Starting in the spring of 2011, these environmentally friendly, energyefficient fuel-cell hybrid buses of the latest generation will be setting the pace in local public transportation for example, in the NaBuZ (Sustainable Bus Systems of the Future) project in Hamburg. Thanks to enhanced fuel cell technology and hybridization with lithium-ion batteries, the Citaro FuelCELL Hybrid bus has a range of approximately 250 kilometers and consumes almost 50 percent less hydrogen than its predecessor. Daimler Buses has already sold more than 3,200 Orion VII hybrid buses in North America; the vehicles are in use by customers in New York, Seattle, and Toronto. Daimler Buses has thus sold more hybrid buses than any other manufacturer in the world. On the road to zero emissions Through continued further development, Daimlers diesel engines have evolved into high-tech drive systems that will remain the backbone of the commercial vehicle industry for many years to come. Diesel engines have great potential, as evidenced by their steadily reduced emissions and continuously increasing fuel efficiency. As a result, emissions of particulates and nitrogen oxides, for example, have decreased by far more than 90 percent on average since 1990. Mercedes-Benz trucks and buses equipped with state-of-the-art BlueTec diesel technology combine these environmental improvements with economic benefits for the vehicle operator. The course plotted by Daimler extends from clean conventional fuels such as gasoline and diesel to natural gas and hybrid drives, as well as hydrogen for vehicles with fuel cell drives.

cruise control system, Active Brake Assist underscores Daimlers technology leadership in the field of active safety. Daimler also sets the pace when it comes to passive safety. In 2007, for example, the company achieved a milestone in passive safety for buses with the introduction of Front Collision Guard (FCG). This system, which stands for maximum protection for drivers and passengers of travel coaches, also offers protection to occupants of other vehicles by preventing them from being forced under an FCG-equipped bus in the event of a collision. The essential elements of FCG are an integrated absorber structure and a front module which upon impact moves the entire drivers area including the seat, steering wheel, and pedals toward the rear by as much as 20 centimeters. This offers an unprecedented level of safety for the driver and the front-seat passenger, while also demonstrating that buses are the safest means of passenger transport. Buses from Mercedes-Benz and Setra are the absolute leaders in active and passive safety worldwide. Various independent studies have found that vehicles equipped with active safety systems are less likely to be involved in accidents than those without such systems. When combined with standard-fitted safety systems, such additional measures can both actively and passively prevent accidents leading to damage and personal injury. Safety training programs for bus drivers are another way to lower accident figures and since 1993 more than 15,000 drivers have participated in programs certified by the German Road Safety Council (DVR).

Pioneer in active and passive safety For more than 50 years, developments from Daimler have been leading the way in the field of vehicle safety. These developments can be divided into active and passive safety elements. One example of an active safety system is the multiple award-winning Active Brake Assist (ABA), whose introduction in 2006 expanded the range of highly efficient assistance systems for active accident prevention. The system goes into action whenever there is imminent danger of a collision with a slower-moving vehicle ahead and the driver fails to react to this situation. After issuing several phased warnings, the assistant automatically engages an emergency braking maneuver, thereby actively working to prevent rear-end collisions and helping to save lives. Currently unparalleled in the industry, ABA has been available in Mercedes-Benz trucks since 2006 and in Mercedes-Benz and Setra brand travel coaches since 2008. Each Safety Coach we deliver brings us one step closer to our vision of accident-free driving, says Daimler Board of Management member Andreas Renschler, who is responsible for Daimler Trucks and Daimler Buses. Thats because its been proven that safety systems help reduce the number of accidents that occur. Along with other active assistance systems such as the Electronic Stability Program (ESP), the Lane Assistant (SPA), the Continuous Braking Limiter (DBL), Brake Assist (BA), and the ART proximity
