Question 1.

What elements would you include in providing a layered security system for a three-building corporate campus that includes a five-story building housing a financial services company in the following scenario? Some of the elements that I would include in providing a layered security system are make it layered different from each other. The reason each layer of the security is different, if

the attackers manage to breach one layer, they will not be able to use the same techniques to breach other layers. The elements I would include in providing a layered security system ensure the honesty of the system is not compromised. I feel all three buildings will have layered security system that offers the most comprehensive defense by providing multiple security barriers. The way I would work the layered security system even if one layer is penetrated, a program or programmer would have to breach several other layers each one being more complicated than the one before. This would make it harder on the offenders when they are trying to break in. I feel that it is very unlikely that an attacker has all the skills and tools on hand to breach each layer of defense. I think that is the key element in my layered security system. My security system has a lower likelihood of failing than single tier security systems.

The campus is located adjacent to a river that flows into Chesapeake Bay and sits on ground 8 feet above sea level. The building is in a suburban location, sited on approximately five acres adjacent to an interstate highway ramp. Parking is included within the campus boundary and approximately 250 employees are present daily, plus approximately 50 visitors. The loading docks can be accessed from the parking lot via side roads. Building 1 contains the headquarters offices of the financial service company; Building 2 contains the physical files and computer equipment room; and Building 3 holds administrative offices and storage facilities. The computer room is in the basement to provide a cool operating environment. The storage facilities hold equipment and supplies used to maintain the grounds. See the map on the next page. Light poles are indicated by the + symbol.

Question 2.

What CPTED strategies would you use for a typical hospital? Consider the area around the building(s) as well. Be sure to refer to the CPTED principles stated in the lecture notes.

The strategies I would use for a typical hospital would be having a good natural surveillance around the hospital. I would like 90% of the building made out of glass so it will give the perception that people can be seen. This will be free of cost, and will deter crime and potential offenders. As people are moving around the hospital, they will be able to observe what is going on around them, because the area is open and well lit. I would also use low landscaping, remove all dark and lurking places, and add more streets lights. Also I would add features that maximize visibility of people, parking areas and building entrances. Next I would work on the hospital parking lot gate to prevent potential offenders from getting too close to the hospital. If the parking lot was open, an offender could park close to the entrance to the hospital, then make a speedy getaway after committing the crime. I would also work on the flow of foot traffic. I would try to stop all pedestrians from walking into unauthorized places in the hospital. I would like to create one public entrance. This entrance would have a 24/7 guard and receptionists desk where visitors will be greeted. I would also work on all roof access to eliminate offenders from coming though the roof. I would like to put a big tall fence with gates around the hospital; this will make it difficult for anyone to enter without permission. Also the tall fence will send a good message without using costly structures. Also while using territorial

reinforcement I would use the landscaping as a natural barrier between private and public areas. I would also use different color bricks for the sideways, so it will separate them visually from the street. I would also make sure trees and bushes are not use to obstruct the view, or provide hiding places for offenders. Maintenance can also go with territorial reinforcement. I always believe that a well maintained area send a good message that people notice and take care about what happens in an area. I think this discourages destruction and other crimes. A vandalized area then becomes more inviting to higher levels of crime. Property should be well maintained as a matter of safety as well as pride Overall I think my CPTED strategies will keep this hospital safe and secure. I think
my views are based on anticipating and thought processes of a potential offender, and creating an environment that discourages potential. I think by using CPTED it adds advantage of creating a sense of security and well being among employees.
