havebeenafewsightingsovertime.Thehawksbillpopulationissaidtobedeclining,butthere arelargepopulationsthatcontinuetonestinYemen,northeasternAustralia,theRedSea,and Oman(Ruckdeschel&Shoop,2006).Hawksbillseaturtlesmayhavealengthupto35inches andhaveamassupto220pounds.Thesmalldistributionofhawksbillsisnotsurprising consideringthefactthatthefamoustortoiseshelldesignthatmanyaresofamiliarwithwas actuallythehawksbillscarapace(Spotila,2004).Todaythetortoiseshelldesignhasbeen replacedwithfauxplasticdesigns,butmanypeoplestilladmirethebeautyofthetrue tortoiseshellobjectsanditisoneofthemainreasonsforthenearextinctionofthehawksbill (Spotila,2004). Seaturtlescanbeverydifferentintheirdiet,appearance,migration,nesting,andmany
othercategories,butallseaturtlesfacecertainpredators,especiallybeforeandaftertheyhave

hatched.RuckdeschelandShoop(2006)statethat,thenightthattheeggsarelaidholdsthe greatestpotentialforpredators;thepotentialdeclinesduringtheincubationperiod,andthen becomeshighagainastheeggsbegintohatchandtheirscentbecomesprevalent.Some predatorsinclude:ghostcrabs,raccoons,skunks,bears,fireants,dogs,birds,theoccasional armadillo,andhumans.Humansarethebiggestthreattothesurvivalofseaturtles(McLellan, Arps,&Donnelly,2009).RecentlyinJune2010CapeHatterasNationalSeashorewasstruck withhumanactsthatendedthelifeofonefemaleloggerheadthatwascomingontoshoreto nest.Repanshek(2010)reportedthatadriverwasdrivinghisvehicleonthebeachwhenitgot stuckontopoftheturtle,thenranoveritnumeroustimesashewastryingtofreehisvehicle. Itisclearthatmanypeoplehavelostasenseofrespectforthesewonderfulcreatures.Itwould befascinatingtotravelbacktoatimebeforethedepletionoftheseaturtlepopulation.
