ContentResearchPaper Seaturtlesareconsideredtobeverygraceful,gentlecreaturesthatshouldbe

understoodandprotectedacrosstheworldandespeciallyinNorthCarolina.InMay,while flocksoftropicalbirdsaremigratingtotheNorthCarolinamountainstopropagatetheir species,somemuchbigger,slowermovingcreaturesarearrivingonourbeachestoreproduce theirs:Theeverfascinatingseaturtles(SeaturtlesinNC,2010,para.1). Therearesevendifferentspeciesofseaturtles:theleatherback,thegreen,theKemps

ridley,theOliveridley,theflatback,thehawksbill,andtheloggerhead.Onlyfiveoftheseven speciestraveltotheNorthCarolinawaters:theloggerhead,thegreen,theleatherback,the Kempsridley,andthehawksbill;theloggerheadisseenmostfrequentlyoutofthefive. Theloggerheadseaturtlegetsitsnamefromitslargeheadandpowerfuljaws.Amature

loggerheadcanbeupto40incheslongandweighupto440pounds.Theirmaindietconsistsof mollusks,crabs,othercrustaceans,andrarely,jellyfish.Eachtwotofouryears,theloggerhead willreproduceandlayupto600eggsperseason.Aftertheeggsarelaiditwilltake60daysof incubationbeforetheeggshatch.Ahatchlingwillnotreproduceonitsownuntilitisabout20 to30yearsold.AspecificloggerheadnamedAdelitabecamethefirstseaturtletobetracked, whichopenedmanynewdiscoveriesinseaturtlemigration.AccordingtotheStateofthe WorldsSeaTurtles(2005),loggerheadsmaytravelthousandsofmilesformigrationandarein dangeroflosingtheirhabitatandbeingaccidentallycaughtbyfishermen.Spotila(2004)givesa storyoffishermanwhotriedtohunta610poundloggerheadoffthecoastofConnecticut: Severalhourslatertheylimpedbackintoportaftertryingtospeartheturtle,fightingit withtheiroars,andstrugglingtostayafloatafterthebattle.Theturtlenearly

overturnedtheboatwithitsflippers,chewedtheoarsintostumps,andtoreagashin oneofthemensarms.Theturtlethensankintotheseaandswamaway.Themen resolvedneveragaintohuntloggerheads.Iftrue,thisparticularturtle,atleast,knew howtodefenditselfandliveduptotheloggerheadreputation.(p.163) Thegreenseaturtleunliketheloggerheadseaturtlehasbeensoughtafterformany

yearsbecauseofitsbodyfat,whichisthemainingredientingreenturtlesoup.Eventhough ithasbecomeillegaltocaptureandtradethegreenseaturtleoritseggsinsomepartsofthe world,itstillcontinuestohappen(TheStateoftheWorldsSeaTurtles,2005).Greensea turtlestendtobeaslongas48inchesandhaveamassof144to450pounds.Theirmaindiet consistsmainlyofjellyfishintheimmaturestateandeventuallysoftcoralsasthegreensea turtlesmature.Greenseaturtlestendtobeinmoretropicalareasandatonepointitwas estimatedthattherewere500milliongreenseaturtlesintheCaribbean(TheStateofthe WorldsSeaTurtles,2005). Theleatherbackseaturtleiscommonlycalledthegreatmarinerbecauseofitsunique

abilitytosurviveinbothfrigidcoldandwarmwatersoftheAtlantic(Spotila,2004).According toSpotila(2004),theleatherbackseaturtleisoneofthemostincrediblymaneuverableofall theseaturtlesandoneofthefastest.Theleatherbackdoesnothaveanyissueasittriesto escapefromasharkoranyotherpredatorofthesea.Leatherbacksrangeinlengthfrom52to 70inchesandcanweighupto2000pounds.Thecarapace(shell)oftheleatherbackisone featurethatmakesitdifferentfromtheotherspeciesbecauseofitsrubberytextureas opposedtoahardshell.Thedietoftheleatherbackismainlyjellyfish,andtheytendtotravelas

farasittakestofeast.Onecanbecertainthataleatherbackseaturtlewilltravelfarandwide throughcoldwatersforonereason,feasting(Appenzeller,2009). KempsridleyseaturtlesarealsopresentinthewatersnearNorthCarolina,but

accordingtoRuckdeschelandShoop(2006),Kempsridleyswilltraveltomanydifferentareas, buttheywillalwaysreturntonestinMexico.In2004,Spotilastated,Thesmallest,theKemps ridley,isnamedafterRichardKemp,oneofthefirstpeopletostudythespecies.Theridley partofthenameisabitofamystery.Ridleysdisplayanestingphenomenonknownasan arribada,ormassnesting.Duringanarribadaasmanyas100,000turtlesemergefromthesurf tonest(p.3).Kempsridleyrangesinlengthfrom24to28inchesandhaveamassupto130 pounds. ThehawksbillseaturtlesaretheleastprevalentintheNorthCarolinawaters,butthere

havebeenafewsightingsovertime.Thehawksbillpopulationissaidtobedeclining,butthere arelargepopulationsthatcontinuetonestinYemen,northeasternAustralia,theRedSea,and Oman(Ruckdeschel&Shoop,2006).Hawksbillseaturtlesmayhavealengthupto35inches andhaveamassupto220pounds.Thesmalldistributionofhawksbillsisnotsurprising consideringthefactthatthefamoustortoiseshelldesignthatmanyaresofamiliarwithwas actuallythehawksbillscarapace(Spotila,2004).Todaythetortoiseshelldesignhasbeen replacedwithfauxplasticdesigns,butmanypeoplestilladmirethebeautyofthetrue tortoiseshellobjectsanditisoneofthemainreasonsforthenearextinctionofthehawksbill (Spotila,2004). Seaturtlescanbeverydifferentintheirdiet,appearance,migration,nesting,andmany

othercategories,butallseaturtlesfacecertainpredators,especiallybeforeandaftertheyhave

hatched.RuckdeschelandShoop(2006)statethat,thenightthattheeggsarelaidholdsthe greatestpotentialforpredators;thepotentialdeclinesduringtheincubationperiod,andthen becomeshighagainastheeggsbegintohatchandtheirscentbecomesprevalent.Some predatorsinclude:ghostcrabs,raccoons,skunks,bears,fireants,dogs,birds,theoccasional armadillo,andhumans.Humansarethebiggestthreattothesurvivalofseaturtles(McLellan, Arps,&Donnelly,2009).RecentlyinJune2010CapeHatterasNationalSeashorewasstruck withhumanactsthatendedthelifeofonefemaleloggerheadthatwascomingontoshoreto nest.Repanshek(2010)reportedthatadriverwasdrivinghisvehicleonthebeachwhenitgot stuckontopoftheturtle,thenranoveritnumeroustimesashewastryingtofreehisvehicle. Itisclearthatmanypeoplehavelostasenseofrespectforthesewonderfulcreatures.Itwould befascinatingtotravelbacktoatimebeforethedepletionoftheseaturtlepopulation. DuringtheChristopherColumbustimeperiodtherewerethousandsofseaturtles.

AccordingtoSpotila(2004),ChristopherColumbussonFerdinandwroteofhowtheysaw islandsintheAtlanticthatwerefullofturtleswhichseemedtolooklikerocks.Ferdinandgives ushopethatonedayouroceanswillbeaspopulatedastheywereduringChristopher Columbustime.Theseaturtlepopulationhascontinuedtodeclinebecauseofincreasing humandevelopmentsinourcoastalareasandithasbecomeveryimportantthatwebeginto educateeveryoneaboutseaturtles(Ruckdeschel&Shoop,2006). Therearemanyorganizationsthatareinplacetoprotecttheworldsseaturtles;some

arelocatedinternationally,andsomearehereinNorthCarolina.Oceana,aninternational organizationfocusedonoceanconservation,hasimplementedaplasticspledge,apromiseto useasmanyreusableitemsaspossible(Oceana,2010).Seaturtleprotectionisanissueofsuch

magnitudegloballythattheWorldWildlifeFoundationcreatedaGlobalMarineTurtleStrategy thatwouldputforthgoalsforthenextdecade.Finally,locallyinNorthCarolina,therearetwo wonderfulorganizationsinplacetohelpprotectandeducateothers:KarenBeasleySeaTurtle RescueandRehabilitationCenterofTopsailIslandandtheLoveaSeaTurtleorganizationofPitt County.Notonlyarepeoplebecomingmoreeducatedaboutseaturtlesthroughtheseand otherorganizations,therearealsolawsinplacetoprotectallendangeredspecies. TheNationalOceanicandAtmosphericAdministrationstatesthatseaturtlesare

protectedunderstate,federal,andinternationallaws.Theprimaryfederallawthatprotects seaturtlesistheEndangeredSpeciesAct(ESA),andtherehavemanyinternationalagreements madeamongdifferentorganizations.Currently145countrieshavesignedtheConventionon InternationalTradeinEndangeredSpeciesagreement,buttherearesomeAsiancountries,such asJapan,thathavedecidednottosignandcontinuetotradeturtleproducts(Lawsprotecting seaturtles,2010).FinallySpotila(2004)states,Itseasytofocusontheproblems,butour energiesarebestspentonpushingthesolutions.Evenasthenumbersofseaturtlesdwindle, manyeffortsaremovingintherightdirection.Peoplehaveawakenedfromtheirslumber,and oftenwhenthathappensnothingcanstopthem(p.92).

indepth,itisobviousthatanodysseyismorethanjustasimplejourney.Thewordodyssey stemsfromtheGreekmythologicalking,Odysseus,whotraveledfarandwideinmanyofthe AncientGreekpoet,Homerspoems. Aftermuchresearch,odysseycanbedefinedasaseriesofcomplexexperiencesthat

onegoesthroughthatleadstoeitheradevastatingorremarkableending.Odysseycaneasily berelatedtothejourneythataseaturtletakesthroughitslifecycleandthechallengesthatit mayface. Asaseaturtleimmediatelylayshereggssafelyonthebeachtheyareinimmediate

danger.Anyanimalinpassingorevenirresponsiblehumansmayharmtheeggs.Aftertheeggs hatchtheybecomehatchlingsanditissaidthatonlyoneinevery10,000hatchlingswillmakeit toadulthood;thatitselfisanodyssey.Itisanamazingjourneythatthesetinyhatchlingshave tofaceassoonastheyareborn.Imagine,hatchingandthentacklinghugewavesandpredators togettoasafenetofseagrassmilesawayfromshore. Afterahatchlinghasgrowntofullsizeitisstillnotsafefromdanger.Adultseaturtles

canfacethedangersofhumanpredatorsonandoffland.RecentlyinCapeHatterasafemale seaturtlecomingtoshoretonestwasrunoverbyanillegalvehicleonthebeach.Thistypeof behaviorbyhumansisonlyasmallexampleoftheodysseythataseaturtlehastofaceona dailybasistostayalive.Itisamazingthatwestillhaveanyseaturtlesleftafterthehuge odysseytheyhavepushedthroughthroughouttime.Watchingaseaturtleasitgracefully swimsthroughthewaterisaremarkableendingtotheseaturtlesodyssey.

exploreseaturtlesandtheirpredatorstheywillbegintofindarealworldproblemthatison ourhands;seaturtlesareanendangeredspeciesbecauseofhumannegligence(McLellan,Arps, &Donnelly,2009).Throughoutthecampthestudentswillexploretheodysseyofseaturtlesin NorthCarolinawhilecreatingatechnologyinfusedproduct.Thepurposeofthisproductisto raiseawarenessonseaturtleconservationtotheGreenvillecommunitythroughtheLoveASea Turtle(L.A.S.T)organization.Beforecreatingthefinalproductthestudentswillcompletea varietyofthoughtprovokingactivitiesthatwillhelpthemorganizetheirthoughtsdaily.Each daythestudentswillusehttp://seaturtleodyssey.weebly.com/tonavigatethrougheachofthe onlinetools.ThisisasitethatIhavecreatedspecificallyforthisAIGunit.
