Bangalore Chapter Meet

October was a busy month for ALCOM. Close on the heels of Yaadein, the 85 batch reunion, we organized the Bangalore Chapter Meet on the 16th of October, 2010. The second Chapter Meet of the year was held at Hotel Atria in Bangalore, and was attended by 35 of our alumni. Chapter Meets are organized with the motive of having a common platform for discussing some of the most relevant issues with respect to the Institute and the Alumni. They are held by rotation in the major cities of India. The theme for the Bangalore Chapter Meet was Developing Brand IMT through Innovation. In this era of innumerable B-schools vying for a place among the top institutes of the nation, we are striving to maintain the distinction that IMT and its students hold. This Meet was a podium to deliberate on how further to build on our brand in newer and innovative ways. Also, how best to leverage it in order to build an efficient network among the alumni. The evening began with a welcome note by Mr. Prakash Pathak, Co-ordinator, Corporate Engagement Team of IMT Ghaziabad.

After this, Mr. Shankar Iyer (Batch of 85) was requested to introduce the topic for the evening and open the discussion. The discussion was carried forward by keynote speaker Mr. Krishan Kansal (Batch of 95). Many innovative ideas came up during the course of the evening, like ways of engaging alumni for an incubation cell for budding entrepreneurs within the Institute, soliciting the help of alumni in the fields of marketing and media to help create awareness about the Institute, etc. It was a lively discussion enriched by active participation by alumnus ranging from the 85 batch to the 10 batch. Mr. Shankar Iyer concluded the meeting by summing up the key points discussed, and requesting the alumni to be proactive in taking initiatives for the Institutes betterment. Dinner followed where alumni across batches mingled with each other and reminisced about their college days. The evening ended with a strong note of enthusiasm to strengthen the ties among the alumni. All in all, the event was a success, turning out to be a great opportunity for those present to connect with other IMTians, share opinions and collaborate.

In the first round the teams were asked to locate items in 360 degree panorama views of cities from across the world like Paris, Rome etc. the teams were required to show a lot of presence of mind as one of the teams were asked to find out the time in the city for which they had to locate a clock tower. The second round was a KenKen puzzle which is an arithmetic and logic puzzle along the lines of Sudoku. In the third round the teams were tested on their recollection power as they were shown images for thirty seconds and then asked questions on the basis of that. None of the rounds were elimination rounds and all the teams went through all the three rounds with scores being given for every round and the team with highest cumulative score at the end of the day was declared the winner. Winners walked away with cash prizes and meal vouchers at nearby restaurants.

Alum Musings
The blog in feature in this issue of Sampark is Receding Hairlines and Expanding Waistlines by Mr. Akshay Kaura, Founder and Managing Director, Wirehead Infotech Pvt Ltd. In the summer of 1985, 37 of us graduated from IMT, confident, but a little unsure of how the corporate world would receive us. Over the years we got busy with work, home and parent-teacher meetings and somewhere in all of this we disconnected with IMT. On its part IMT also steadfastly maintained its distance by mailing us our diplomas rather than make the effort to hold convocation. Over the years the only connect we had with the Institute was the admission notices one read in the papers or the annual B-School surveys. One read with some pride that like our careers, IMT's reputation had also taken off and it was counted amongst the best in the country. Our reconnect with IMT began about four years ago when the Alumni Relationship Committee (ALCOM) got in touch with some of us. Excitement peaked when the batch of 84 had their 25 years reunion last year and we began our search for "missing" batch mates. Apart from some 10-12 of us who were in touch over the years, we had no idea of the whereabouts of the rest of the batch. Anil Sharma started the ball rolling and Shankar Iyer managed to keep us together on IMT85@yahoogroups.com. A few months back ALCOM started planning for our 25 years reunion and a whole bunch of us reconnected. We were eager to meet and compare, amongst other things, our receding hairlines and expanding waistlines. Of course we also wanted to find out how IMT had changed over the years. The first indication of the change at IMT was the fact that we were stopped at the gate by the guards and asked to go to "Gate No

2". IMT had a second gate? (The only second gate we remembered was the gap in the barbed wire fence behind the hostel).

The second surprise was the three storied MDP block where we were going to stay. It had air-conditioned rooms and what not. Instead of getting nostalgic, we got a feeling of Deja vu. The hostel block looked straight out of the sets of "3 Idiots". The mess hall had "grown" to twice its size; there were basketball, tennis and badminton courts. An "Amphitheatre", which used to be the mysterious hole in the ground, during our times, flat panel TVs all over campus, a 24 hour canteen, a double storied "Library" open 22 hours a day. Except the white paint on the walls of the Academic block, nothing was as we remembered it. Our reunion action started on the 8th evening when Puru (R Purushothaman) and Uncle Tom (Sudhir Gandhi) reached campus. The party started with the right "spirits" when Sunny, Rajendra and Shankar reached the campus on the 9th morning. After lunch an impromptu game of cricket and volleyball happened because we wanted to recreate the spirit of those lazy afternoons spent on the cricket ground making sure "The JK" was not bowled out. Late afternoon and we assembled in the "conference room" where Cmde Acharya, the Administrative head at IMT, kick-started the festivities. The high point of the session was meeting Dr. Khan, who despite his age was still at it. We also celebrated Anil Jain's (Poonam's husband) 50th birthday by cutting a cake, thoughtfully provided by ALCOM. After the group photos the "gang" shifted to the MDP block again, for dinner and post that, bid goodbye to Dr. Khan and some of our mates. The rest of us shifted to the Amphitheatre for some more fun and games. We discovered IMT's Rock Band and rediscovered our own Sanjay Gupta who was ready with his karaoke and his songbook. His daughter also sang a couple of songs and we were unanimous that she did a better job of if than Mr Gupta. Soon Mr Sudhir Gandhi sprang a surprise by doing "The Salsa". He claims he

Sampark

took up Salsa to keep the bored housewives of KL from mischief! Sandeep Gupta and his wife Anjali, Puru and Ritu (Rajeev Bohra's wife) also got into the mood and did their version of "The Salsa". Venky surprised us with his rendition of Surangani. The biggest surprise of the evening came in the form of a dance (if you could call it that) by none other than Sunny Munshi who later claimed to have finished his yearly quota of exercise. The fun and games continued past four in the morning. Apart from all the "catching up" that we did, the reunion was made special by the members of ALCOM (by the way, all students). I am sure that I speak on behalf of all my batch mates when I say that we were looked after really well. By the time we left on 10th morning, our reconnect with IMT was complete. It has been about ten days since the event, yet all of us who were at the campus are still raving about the treatment we got and hoping that we will not have to wait another 25 years to be on campus again.

Q and Alumnus
Q: What were your most memorable moments in IMT? Answers: Sudhir Gandhi: The Ram Leela prepared during the induction was a very new experience for us. At IMT it was my first stay at a hostel. I met all my batch mates and had lots of fun. And we are kicking off in the same vein 25 years later. Its great to continue the same way we left it 25 years ago. Rajkumar Koul: One fine morning, following the night long drinking, we decided that we need to get back to being healthy and we went for a run in the morning. Sunny Munshi ran in bathroom slippers from here till chungi and back. Sunny Munshi: We forced Veer Kaul to take a shower after probably a month. He came back in 3 minutes flat and his feet were still dry. The man went through it so quickly that he did not even let the water reach his feet. Veer had a lungi that he wore for over a month without washing. One day I took his lungi and burnt it as it was becoming a health hazard. Shanker Iyer: Puru, I and Venky were part of the curd club. I used to prepare curd in my room and after we ate at the mess; we would bring rice back to my room and gulp it up with curd. Without it, our meals were never over.

Sunny Munshi: During our Operations Research examination, we realized that theres no way we could pass. So we went to the professors place hoping to have a chat. During the conversation we told him that we are going to Kashmir and if theres anything he would like us to bring for him. Get me some saffron he replied. How much? we inquired. Bring me a sack full was the reply. Rajkumar Koul: Towards the end of our course, we all ran out of money. Dr. Sethi the new professor had just joined. Sunny Munshi and I walked in to his office, Sir we want to open a mobile library since the library is closed on Sundays. He gave us Rs. 1000. The very night, a bunch of us went to Delhi, spent all of it and the next three months we made a great effort hiding from him.

Q: Anything you really loved in or around IMT? Answers: Sunny Munshi, Akshay Kaura, Shanker Iyer, Sudhir Gandhi and Rajkumar Koul: Chungi!!! Akshay Kaura: 2 teachers: Dr. CV Gupta and Dr. Khan. The whole batch remembers the answer to, What is depreciation?

Q: How important has an MBA been for your career? Ans: More than the degree, it was the course that created an impact. During my tenure at IMT, I learnt to gel better with people, present myself better. It gave me an all round development: People skills, law, economics, etc.
