Why did we spend so much political capital for [the federal hate crimes law] when, OK, its retribution, but it still does nothing to prevent hate crimes, said GOProuds JIMMY LASALVIA, who was attacked this week near Union Station.

morning, no one from the GLLU returned his message. Sgt. Carlos Mejia, the GLLUs supervisor, told the Blade on Monday that the unit is phasing out the pager number, which he said is part of an antiquated system that sometimes malfunctions. Mejia said the GLLU and the police department have distributed literature and public notices advising citizens to contact the unit on its new 24-hour smart phone number of 202-506-0714. LaSalia, in a phone interview, said he later reached the GLLU and that one of its members, Sgt. Joe Morquecho, interviewed him about the incident and made a report that lists the incident as a hate crime. He gave me the name of the detective handling the case and I was just contacted by a victims services representative, LaSalvia said. So the police departments been very good to follow up with me and talk to me about this. LaSalvia informed friends about the attack in a message on his Facebook page. Mejia said the GLLU ofce is not staffed 24 hours a day. One police source said civilian volunteers sometimes work in the ofce when the ofcers are out in the eld. The volunteers are instructed not to answer the door since they are not trained to work directly with the public, the source said. I realize now that this is something that should be reported, LaSalvia said. LaSalvia described his attacker as a black male appearing about 17 or 18 years old, about 5 feet 11 inches tall, and weighing about 145 pounds. He said the attacker was wearing gym shorts and had his shirt off, exposing a slim but muscular build. LaSalvia said the attacker had a medium skin complexion and very short hair almost like a shaved head. GOProud describes itself on its website as an organization representing gay conservatives and their alliescommitted to a traditional conservative agenda that emphasizes limited government, individual liberty, free markets and a condent foreign policy.
Although D.C. police have listed the assault against him as a hate crime, LaSalvia acknowledged that he and GOProud have emerged as critics of the federal and state hate crimes laws. We do not oppose hate crimes laws but I happen to think theyre a waste of time because they dont do anything to prevent violent crimes from occurring and they have outlasted their usefulness, he said. According to LaSalvia, hate crimes laws would have been useful in the past, when state and federal law enforcement ofcials often did not prosecute crimes targeting gays and other minorities such as blacks.

International AIDS Society calls for large-scale adoption of PrEP & PEP
ROME The worlds leading association of HIV health professionals has called for an end to the debate over studies that have shown both that use of early combination antiretroviral therapy by HIV-infected individuals and the daily use of HIV drugs by HIV-negative individuals signicantly reduce HIV transmission. The International AIDS Society will be highlighting the results of three African studies showing a signicant reduction in HIV transmission rates between partners in opposite-sex sero-discordant relationships, in which only one of the two partners is infected with HIV. Preliminary results from similar studies in American communities of men who have sex with men are beginning to show similar results. However, while the Global Network of People living with HIV heralded the success of the studies, the group cautioned the IAS to consider the health-risks of taking the sometimes toxic drugs, and encouraged the group to work to make the drugs more affordable as well as to consider the health risks associated with the regiments. The results of these studies highlight yet again the essential role of affordable ARVs in prevention. They are a major breakthrough allowing a new vision on current prevention efforts, Kevin Moody, GNP+ Coordinator and CEO, said in a statement. Serious concerns remain about the long-term health effects for HIVnegative people when taking antiretrovirals for HIV prevention.
Opponents of new California gay history curriculum mandate launch petition drive
SACRAMENTO The FAIR Education Act, signed last week in California mandating school districts include the contributions of people with disabilities and LGBT individuals in history curriculum is already under attack by a concerned group. On July 15, the group began the process of gathering 504,760 signatures to qualify a ballot measure asking voters to overturn the law (SB 48). The Traditional Values Association has suggested that the law will be used to indoctrinate children to not only accept but to endorse homosexuality. Equality California, however, whose members lobbied for the laws passage, believes its on the right side of history and said in a statement, We set out to ensure that California students learn fair and accurate information about the rich and diverse history of LGBT people and people with disabilities as well as their contributions to society.

Gay men selected to ll Utah House vacancy, run state Democratic Party
SALT LAKE CITY Utah Democratic Party leaders have selected two openly gay men for top positions in the state, including an appointment to the state House. Saturday, Democratic convention voters overwhelmingly chose art dealer and Equality Utah founder, Jim Dabakis state party chair, on a 528-71 vote. The party also selected former Equality Utah board member, Brian Doughty, to ll Jackie Buiskupskis seat in the 30th District after the openly gay legislator resigned when she moved out of her district. According to the Salt Lake City Tribune, Doughty resigned from the Equality Utah Board to pursue the seat.
New York couples wishing to marry Sunday will have to take a number
NEW YORK CITY While New York City will open some city clerk ofces a day early on Sunday to allow same-sex couples to marry, not everyone who has applied will get a license on day one of marriage equality in the Empire State. From Tuesday until Thursday at noon, hundreds of the 2,661 same-sex couples who have applied for licences were able to register for a lottery that will select 764 couples to marry in the city that day, which will break the record for most marriages performed in Americas largest city by more than 100. More than 60 judges from around the state are volunteering to be on hand to waive the 24-hour waiting period normally required for couples to marry after they have received their licences. Several cities besides New York City will also open on Sunday to perform marriages including Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse. Meanwhile, the city of Niagra Falls plans Sunday to hold a mass-wedding ceremony for same-sex couples on Luna Island with the falls lit in rainbow colors as a backdrop for the event.
of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the next few weeks, she added. A spokesperson for the Justice Department declined to comment. In a brief led prior to order coming down from the Ninth Circuit, Log Cabin Republicans assert the court should keep the injunction in place because U.S. government cannot justify the continued expulsion of service members under Dont Ask, Dont Tell. The parties, and thousands of gay and lesbian servicemembers now serving honorably but in silence, would be left whipsawed, wondering from day to day what the current state of their constitutional rights might be, the ling states. Alex Nicholson, executive director of Servicemembers United and sole named veteran plaintiff in the lawsuit, said the Ninth Circuit did the right thing in rejecting the U.S. governments request to reinstate Dont Ask, Dont Tell in full. The situation with nally ending this outdated and discriminatory federal policy has become absolutely ridiculous, Nicholson said. This law is unconstitutional on its face, it is virtually dead in practice, and no one should be trying to resuscitate it at this point. The executive branch has been exceptionally unreasonable in the amount of time it has now let the legislative certication process drag out. It is simply not right to put the men and women of our armed forces through this circus any longer. Under the repeal law signed in December, Dont Ask, Dont Tell will be off the books when 60 days pass after the president, the defense secretary and the chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff certify the U.S. military is ready for open service. Troops have been participating in training since February to prepare for Dont Ask, Dont Tell, but certication has yet to take place.

or even if it would happen this Congress as she acknowledged that the votes are present in committee to move forward. Theres no timeframe right now and this is I believe we have votes from all Democrats, so whether well pass it out on a majority basis, I dont know, Feinstein said. Feinstein maintained that the purpose of the upcoming hearing would be to demonstrate the hardship that DOMA has on married same-sex couples. Under questioning from the Washington Blade, Feinstein also responded to criticism about the scheduled witnesses for the hearing being all white and the lack of representation of bi-national couples at the
hearing. Gay activist Dan Choi has spoken out against the selection of the witnesses for being what he called exclusively white and privileged, even though the hearing notice indicates the same-sex couples set to testify have suffered economic hardship because of DOMA. Every couple has a different story to tell, Feinstein said. Thats for sure. The point is, these are all legally married people. And the point is marriage is the preserve of the state, not the federal government. Just as all family matters, abortion, adoption, inheritance are really state law. Thats why one state is different from another state.

FDA-Approved Patient Labeling Patient Information ATRIPLA (uh TRIP luh) Tablets
ALERT: Find out about medicines that should NOT be taken with ATRIPLA (efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate). Please also read the section MEDICINES YOU SHOULD NOT TAKE WITH ATRIPLA. Generic name: efavirenz, emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (eh FAH vih renz, em tri SIT uh bean and te NOE fo veer dye soe PROX il FYOU mar ate) Read the Patient Information that comes with ATRIPLA before you start taking it and each time you get a refill since there may be new information. This information does not take the place of talking to your healthcare provider about your medical condition or treatment. You should stay under a healthcare providers care when taking ATRIPLA. Do not change or stop your medicine without first talking with your healthcare provider. Talk to your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you have any questions about ATRIPLA. What is the most important information I should know about ATRIPLA? Some people who have taken medicine like ATRIPLA (which contains nucleoside analogs) have developed a serious condition called lactic acidosis (build up of an acid in the blood). Lactic acidosis can be a medical emergency and may need to be treated in the hospital. Call your healthcare provider right away if you get the following signs or symptoms of lactic acidosis: You feel very weak or tired. You have unusual (not normal) muscle pain. You have trouble breathing. You have stomach pain with nausea and vomiting. You feel cold, especially in your arms and legs. You feel dizzy or lightheaded. You have a fast or irregular heartbeat. Some people who have taken medicines like ATRIPLA have developed serious liver problems called hepatotoxicity, with liver enlargement (hepatomegaly) and fat in the liver (steatosis). Call your healthcare provider right away if you get the following signs or symptoms of liver problems: Your skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow (jaundice). Your urine turns dark. Your bowel movements (stools) turn light in color. You dont feel like eating food for several days or longer. You feel sick to your stomach (nausea). You have lower stomach area (abdominal) pain. You may be more likely to get lactic acidosis or liver problems if you are female, very overweight (obese), or have been taking nucleoside analog-containing medicines, like ATRIPLA, for a long time. If you also have hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and you stop taking ATRIPLA, you may get a flare-up of your hepatitis. A flare-up is when the disease suddenly returns in a worse way than before. Patients with HBV who stop taking ATRIPLA need close medical follow-up for several months, including medical exams and blood tests to check for hepatitis that could be getting worse. ATRIPLA is not approved for the treatment of HBV, so you must discuss your HBV therapy with your healthcare provider. What is ATRIPLA? ATRIPLA contains 3 medicines, SUSTIVA (efavirenz), EMTRIVA (emtricitabine) and VIREAD (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate also called tenofovir DF) combined in one pill. EMTRIVA and VIREAD are HIV-1 (human immunodeficiency virus) nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) and SUSTIVA is an HIV-1 non-nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI). VIREAD and EMTRIVA are the components of TRUVADA. ATRIPLA can be used alone as a complete regimen, or in combination with other anti-HIV-1 medicines to treat people with HIV-1 infection. ATRIPLA is for adults age 18 and over. ATRIPLA has not been studied in children under age 18 or adults over age 65. HIV infection destroys CD4+ T cells, which are important to the immune system. The immune system helps fight infection. After a large number of T cells are destroyed, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) develops. ATRIPLA helps block HIV-1 reverse transcriptase, a viral chemical in your body (enzyme) that is needed for HIV-1 to multiply. ATRIPLA lowers the amount of HIV-1 in the blood (viral load). ATRIPLA may also help to increase the number of T cells (CD4+ cells), allowing your immune system to improve. Lowering the amount of HIV-1 in the blood lowers the chance of death or infections that happen when your immune system is weak (opportunistic infections). Does ATRIPLA cure HIV-1 or AIDS? ATRIPLA does not cure HIV-1 infection or AIDS. The long-term effects of ATRIPLA are not known at this time. People taking ATRIPLA may still get opportunistic infections or other conditions that happen with HIV-1 infection. Opportunistic infections are infections that develop because the immune system is weak. Some of these conditions are pneumonia, herpes virus infections, and Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection. It is very important that you see your healthcare provider regularly while taking ATRIPLA. Does ATRIPLA reduce the risk of passing HIV-1 to others? ATRIPLA has not been shown to lower your chance of passing HIV-1 to other people through sexual contact, sharing needles, or being exposed to your blood. Do not share needles or other injection equipment.
ATRIPLA (efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) Do not share personal items that can have blood or body fluids on them, like toothbrushes or razor blades. Do not have any kind of sex without protection. Always practice safer sex by using a latex or polyurethane condom or other barrier to reduce the chance of sexual contact with semen, vaginal secretions, or blood. Who should not take ATRIPLA? Together with your healthcare provider, you need to decide whether ATRIPLA is right for you. Do not take ATRIPLA if you are allergic to ATRIPLA or any of its ingredients. The active ingredients of ATRIPLA are efavirenz, emtricitabine, and tenofovir DF. See the end of this leaflet for a complete list of ingredients. What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking ATRIPLA? Tell your healthcare provider if you: Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant (see What should I avoid while taking ATRIPLA?). Are breastfeeding (see What should I avoid while taking ATRIPLA?). Have kidney problems or are undergoing kidney dialysis treatment. Have bone problems. Have liver problems, including hepatitis B virus infection. Your healthcare provider may want to do tests to check your liver while you take ATRIPLA or may switch you to another medicine. Have ever had mental illness or are using drugs or alcohol. Have ever had seizures or are taking medicine for seizures. What important information should I know about taking other medicines with ATRIPLA? ATRIPLA may change the effect of other medicines, including the ones for HIV-1, and may cause serious side effects. Your healthcare provider may change your other medicines or change their doses. Other medicines, including herbal products, may affect ATRIPLA. For this reason, it is very important to let all your healthcare providers and pharmacists know what medications, herbal supplements, or vitamins you are taking. MEDICINES YOU SHOULD NOT TAKE WITH ATRIPLA The following medicines may cause serious and life-threatening side effects when taken with ATRIPLA. You should not take any of these medicines while taking ATRIPLA: Vascor (bepridil), Propulsid (cisapride), Versed (midazolam), Orap (pimozide), Halcion (triazolam), ergot medications (for example, Wigraine and Cafergot). ATRIPLA also should not be used with Combivir (lamivudine/zidovudine), EMTRIVA, Epivir, Epivir-HBV (lamivudine), Epzicom (abacavir sulfate/lamivudine), Trizivir (abacavir sulfate/lamivudine/zidovudine), SUSTIVA, TRUVADA, or VIREAD. Vfend (voriconazole) should not be taken with ATRIPLA since it may lose its effect or may increase the chance of having side effects from ATRIPLA. Do not take St. Johns wort (Hypericum perforatum), or products containing St. Johns wort with ATRIPLA. St. Johns wort is an herbal product sold as a dietary supplement. Talk with your healthcare provider if you are taking or are planning to take St. Johns wort. Taking St. Johns wort may decrease ATRIPLA levels and lead to increased viral load and possible resistance to ATRIPLA or cross-resistance to other anti-HIV-1 drugs. ATRIPLA should not be used with HEPSERA (adefovir dipivoxil). It is also important to tell your healthcare provider if you are taking any of the following: Fortovase, Invirase (saquinavir), Biaxin (clarithromycin), Noxafil (posaconazole), or Sporanox (itraconazole); these medicines may need to be replaced with another medicine when taken with ATRIPLA. Calcium channel blockers such as Cardizem or Tiazac (diltiazem), Covera HS or Isoptin (verapamil) and others; Crixivan (indinavir), Selzentry (maraviroc); the immunosuppressant medicines cyclosporine (Gengraf, Neoral, Sandimmune, and others), Prograf (tacrolimus), or Rapamune (sirolimus); Methadone; Mycobutin (rifabutin); Rifampin; cholesterol-lowering medicines such as Lipitor (atorvastatin), Pravachol (pravastatin sodium), and Zocor (simvastatin); or Zoloft (sertraline); these medicines may need to have their dose changed when taken with ATRIPLA. Videx, Videx EC (didanosine); tenofovir DF (a component of ATRIPLA) may increase the amount of didanosine in your blood, which could result in more side effects. You may need to be monitored more carefully if you are taking ATRIPLA and didanosine together. Also, the dose of didanosine may need to be changed. Reyataz (atazanavir sulfate) or Kaletra (lopinavir/ritonavir); these medicines may increase the amount of tenofovir DF (a component of ATRIPLA) in your blood, which could result in more side effects. Reyataz is not recommended with ATRIPLA. You may need to be monitored more carefully if you are taking ATRIPLA and Kaletra together. Also, the dose of Kaletra may need to be changed. Medicine for seizures [for example, Dilantin (phenytoin), Tegretol (carbamazepine), or phenobarbital]; your healthcare provider may want to switch you to another medicine or check drug levels in your blood from time to time. These are not all the medicines that may cause problems if you take ATRIPLA. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider about all medicines that you take. Keep a complete list of all the prescription and nonprescription medicines as well as any herbal remedies that you are taking, how much you take, and how often you take them. Make a new list when medicines or herbal remedies are added or stopped, or if the dose changes. Give copies of this list to all of your healthcare providers and pharmacists every time you visit your healthcare

ATRIPLA (efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) provider or fill a prescription. This will give your healthcare provider a complete picture of the medicines you use. Then he or she can decide the best approach for your situation. How should I take ATRIPLA? Take the exact amount of ATRIPLA your healthcare provider prescribes. Never change the dose on your own. Do not stop this medicine unless your healthcare provider tells you to stop. You should take ATRIPLA on an empty stomach. Swallow ATRIPLA with water. Taking ATRIPLA at bedtime may make some side effects less bothersome. Do not miss a dose of ATRIPLA. If you forget to take ATRIPLA, take the missed dose right away, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double the next dose. Carry on with your regular dosing schedule. If you need help in planning the best times to take your medicine, ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist. If you believe you took more than the prescribed amount of ATRIPLA, contact your local poison control center or emergency room right away. Tell your healthcare provider if you start any new medicine or change how you take old ones. Your doses may need adjustment. When your ATRIPLA supply starts to run low, get more from your healthcare provider or pharmacy. This is very important because the amount of virus in your blood may increase if the medicine is stopped for even a short time. The virus may develop resistance to ATRIPLA and become harder to treat. Your healthcare provider may want to do blood tests to check for certain side effects while you take ATRIPLA. What should I avoid while taking ATRIPLA? Women should not become pregnant while taking ATRIPLA and for 12 weeks after stopping it. Serious birth defects have been seen in the babies of animals and women treated with efavirenz (a component of ATRIPLA) during pregnancy. It is not known whether efavirenz caused these defects. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you are pregnant. Also talk with your healthcare provider if you want to become pregnant. Women should not rely only on hormone-based birth control, such as pills, injections, or implants, because ATRIPLA may make these contraceptives ineffective. Women must use a reliable form of barrier contraception, such as a condom or diaphragm, even if they also use other methods of birth control. Efavirenz, a component of ATRIPLA, may remain in your blood for a time after therapy is stopped. Therefore, you should continue to use contraceptive measures for 12 weeks after you stop taking ATRIPLA. Do not breast-feed if you are taking ATRIPLA. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that mothers with HIV not breast-feed because they can pass the HIV through their milk to the baby. Also, ATRIPLA may pass through breast milk and cause serious harm to the baby. Talk with your healthcare provider if you are breast-feeding. You should stop breast-feeding or may need to use a different medicine. Taking ATRIPLA with alcohol or other medicines causing similar side effects as ATRIPLA, such as drowsiness, may increase those side effects. Do not take any other medicines, including prescription and nonprescription medicines and herbal products, without checking with your healthcare provider. Avoid doing things that can spread HIV-1 infection since ATRIPLA does not stop you from passing the HIV-1 infection to others. What are the possible side effects of ATRIPLA? ATRIPLA may cause the following serious side effects: Lactic acidosis (buildup of an acid in the blood). Lactic acidosis can be a medical emergency and may need to be treated in the hospital. Call your healthcare provider right away if you get signs of lactic acidosis. (See What is the most important information I should know about ATRIPLA?) Serious liver problems (hepatotoxicity), with liver enlargement (hepatomegaly) and fat in the liver (steatosis). Call your healthcare provider right away if you get any signs of liver problems. (See What is the most important information I should know about ATRIPLA?) Flare-ups of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, in which the disease suddenly returns in a worse way than before, can occur if you have HBV and you stop taking ATRIPLA. Your healthcare provider will monitor your condition for several months after stopping ATRIPLA if you have both HIV-1 and HBV infection and may recommend treatment for your HBV. ATRIPLA is not approved for the treatment of hepatitis B virus infection. If you have advanced liver disease and stop treatment with ATRIPLA, the flare-up of hepatitis B may cause your liver function to decline. Serious psychiatric problems. A small number of patients may experience severe depression, strange thoughts, or angry behavior while taking ATRIPLA. Some patients have thoughts of suicide and a few have actually committed suicide. These problems may occur more often in patients who have had mental illness. Contact your healthcare provider right away if you think you are having these psychiatric symptoms, so your healthcare provider can decide if you should continue to take ATRIPLA. Kidney problems (including decline or failure of kidney function). If you have had kidney problems in the past or take other medicines that can cause kidney problems, your healthcare provider should do regular blood tests to check your kidneys. Symptoms that may be related to kidney problems include a high volume of urine, thirst, muscle pain, and muscle weakness. Other serious liver problems. Some patients have experienced serious liver problems including liver failure resulting in transplantation or death. Most of these serious side effects
ATRIPLA (efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) occurred in patients with a chronic liver disease such as hepatitis infection, but there have also been a few reports in patients without any existing liver disease. Changes in bone mineral density (thinning bones). Laboratory tests show changes in the bones of patients treated with tenofovir DF, a component of ATRIPLA. Some HIV patients treated with tenofovir DF developed thinning of the bones (osteopenia) which could lead to fractures. If you have had bone problems in the past, your healthcare provider may need to do tests to check your bone mineral density or may prescribe medicines to help your bone mineral density. Additionally, bone pain and softening of the bone (which may contribute to fractures) may occur as a consequence of kidney problems. Common side effects: Patients may have dizziness, headache, trouble sleeping, drowsiness, trouble concentrating, and/or unusual dreams during treatment with ATRIPLA. These side effects may be reduced if you take ATRIPLA at bedtime on an empty stomach. They also tend to go away after you have taken the medicine for a few weeks. If you have these common side effects, such as dizziness, it does not mean that you will also have serious psychiatric problems, such as severe depression, strange thoughts, or angry behavior. Tell your healthcare provider right away if any of these side effects continue or if they bother you. It is possible that these symptoms may be more severe if ATRIPLA is used with alcohol or mood altering (street) drugs. If you are dizzy, have trouble concentrating, or are drowsy, avoid activities that may be dangerous, such as driving or operating machinery. Rash may be common. Rashes usually go away without any change in treatment. In a small number of patients, rash may be serious. If you develop a rash, call your healthcare provider right away. Other common side effects include tiredness, upset stomach, vomiting, gas, and diarrhea. Other possible side effects with ATRIPLA: Changes in body fat. Changes in body fat develop in some patients taking anti-HIV-1 medicine. These changes may include an increased amount of fat in the upper back and neck (buffalo hump), in the breasts, and around the trunk. Loss of fat from the legs, arms, and face may also happen. The cause and long-term health effects of these fat changes are not known. Skin discoloration (small spots or freckles) may also happen with ATRIPLA. In some patients with advanced HIV infection (AIDS), signs and symptoms of inflammation from previous infections may occur soon after anti-HIV treatment is started. It is believed that these symptoms are due to an improvement in the bodys immune response, enabling the body to fight infections that may have been present with no obvious symptoms. If you notice any symptoms of infection, please inform your doctor immediately. Additional side effects are inflammation of the pancreas, allergic reaction (including swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat), shortness of breath, pain, stomach pain, weakness and indigestion. Tell your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you notice any side effects while taking ATRIPLA. Contact your healthcare provider before stopping ATRIPLA because of side effects or for any other reason. This is not a complete list of side effects possible with ATRIPLA. Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist for a more complete list of side effects of ATRIPLA and all the medicines you will take. How do I store ATRIPLA? Keep ATRIPLA and all other medicines out of reach of children. Store ATRIPLA at room temperature 77 F (25 C). Keep ATRIPLA in its original container and keep the container tightly closed. Do not keep medicine that is out of date or that you no longer need. If you throw any medicines away make sure that children will not find them. General information about ATRIPLA: Medicines are sometimes prescribed for conditions that are not mentioned in patient information leaflets. Do not use ATRIPLA for a condition for which it was not prescribed. Do not give ATRIPLA to other people, even if they have the same symptoms you have. It may harm them. This leaflet summarizes the most important information about ATRIPLA. If you would like more information, talk with your healthcare provider. You can ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist for information about ATRIPLA that is written for health professionals. Do not use ATRIPLA if the seal over bottle opening is broken or missing. What are the ingredients of ATRIPLA? Active Ingredients: efavirenz, emtricitabine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate Inactive Ingredients: croscarmellose sodium, hydroxypropyl cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, sodium lauryl sulfate. The Senate this week conrmed J. PAUL OETKEN to the federal bench by a vote of 80-13.
WASHINGTON BLADE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY
Oetken is rst openly gay male to be conrmed to the federal bench, but not the rst openly LGBT person. U.S. District Judge Deborah Batts, an out lesbian who currently sits on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, is considered the rst openly LGBT person to sit on a federal court. She was appointed during the Clinton administration. U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker, who ruled against Californias ban on samesex marriage Proposition 8 last year, has also come out as gay. However, he only told reporters about his sexual orientation after he retired from the bench. With only two openly gay people conrmed by the Senate to the federal bench, Solmonese said greater representation of LGBT people is still needed on the judiciary. The federal bench is greatly lacking LGBT diversity and with thousands of qualied LGBT attorneys in the [United States], there is no reason why the federal bench should not better reect the composition of our country, Solmonese said. The Senate conrmed Oetken to the position after 30 minutes of debate in which senators from both sides of the aisle praised Oetken and encouraged senators to vote for his nomination. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), who recommended the nomination to Obama, praised Oetken on the Senate oor for his excellence in legal work and the moderation of his views, but also made special note of his sexual orientation. As the rst openly gay man to be conrmed as a federal judge and to serve on the federal bench, he will be a symbol of how much we have achieved as a country in just the last few decades, Schumer said. And importantly, he will give hope to many talented young lawyers who, until
now, thought their paths might be limited because of their sexual orientation. When Paul becomes Judge Oetken, he will be living proof to all those young lawyers that it really does get better. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which approved Oetken unanimously by voice vote in April, said Americans should be proud of President Obama for taking this critical step to break down another barrier and increase diversity in the federal judiciary. All of us in the Senate can also be proud that Mr. Oetken was reported with the support of every member of the Judiciary Committee Democratic and Republican and will be conrmed by what I believe will be an overwhelming vote in the Senate, Leahy said. It is a sign that, as a nation, we have taken a new and welcome step on the path of ensuring that our federal judiciary better reects all Americans. Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), ranking Republican of the Senate Judiciary Committee, also spoke favorably of Oetken on the Senate oor calling the nominee qualied and noting the nominee hails from his home state of Iowa while encouraging other senators to vote for the nomination. However, Grassley didnt mention Oetkens sexual orientation on the oor of the Senate. I support this nomination and congratulate him on his professional accomplishments, Grassley said. Oetken has practiced law at Debevoise and Plimpton, and since 2004, served as associate general counsel at Cablevision. From 1999 to 2001, Oetken was associate counsel to President Clinton and specialized in First Amendment issues, presidential appointments, ethics, civil rights and legal policy. Additionally, Oetken served in various
capacities as an LGBT advocate. The nominee has been involved with Lambda Legal and the American Civil Liberties Union. Oetken also co-authored a U.S. Supreme Court friend-of-the-court brief in Lawrence v. Texas, which struck down sodomy laws throughout the country. Oetken isnt the only openly gay judicial nominee that the Senate has advanced closer to a position on the federal bench. Last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved by a vote of 14-4 the nomination of Alison Nathan, an out lesbian whom Obama also selected to serve on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Another openly gay judicial nominee, Edward DuMont, has been nominated for a position on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. The Senate Judiciary Committee has yet to take up his nomination. In a statement provided to the Washington Blade, Hagan, one of the senators who didnt vote on the Oetken nomination, praised the Senate conrmation of the appointee. I applaud the overwhelming bipartisan support for the nomination of Paul Oetken to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, Hagan said. A great day for the LGBT community and the nation. Sadie Weiner, a Hagan spokesperson, said the North Carolina Democrat didnt vote on the Oetken nomination because the senator was delayed while traveling by aircraft. On Monday, Sen. Hagan was in Charlotte to speak to a camp for highschool aged young women interested in pursuing studies and careers in high technology industries, Weiner said. Her scheduled ight from Charlotte back to Washington was delayed several times causing her to miss the Senate vote on Judge Oetkens nomination.

income tax, as well as FICA and Medicare tax, on that phantom income unlike her other married colleagues. Andrew Sorbo, a Cheshire, Conn., resident and retired history teacher, also testied about nancial troubles he faced after his spouse, Colin Atterbury, died of pancreatic cancer in 2009. Among other things, Sorbo said he was denied the right to be included in his deceased spouses medical insurance plan through the federal government. When I retired as a teacher in 2005, I had no alternative except to pay for my insurance coverage in full through my former school district, at a much higher cost than if I could have been covered under Colins plan as a spouse, Sorbo said. Last year, my insurance payments consumed almost a third of my $24,000 teacher pension. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), chair of the committee, spoke out in his opening statement for passage of the Respect for Marriage Act and said it would allow same-sex couples married under state law to receive federal benets. Nothing in this bill would obligate any person, religious organization, state, or locality to perform a marriage between two persons of the same sex, Leahy said. What would change, and what must change, is the federal governments treatment of statesanctioned marriage. The time has come for the federal government to recognize that these married couples deserve the same legal protections afforded to opposite-sex married couples. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), sponsor of the DOMA repeal legislation, maintained that the anti-gay law should be off the books because marriage, as well as other issues related to family such as adoption and divorce, have been under the jurisdiction of state law. Family law has traditionally been the preserve of state law, Feinstein said. The single exception is DOMA. Chief Justice [William] Rehnquist once wrote that family law has been left to the states from time immemorial, and not without good reason. He was right. Passed by Congress in 1996, DOMA was signed into law by President Clinton. Both Clinton and the bills sponsor at the time, former Republican Rep. Bob Barr, have come out for repeal of the law. DOMA has two components: one that prohibits the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriage and another that allows states not to recognize such marriages performed in other jurisdictions. As a result of the component of DOMA known as Section 3, married same-sex couples cannot participate in federal programs. For instance, they cant le joint federal income taxes, receive spousal benets under Social Security or obtain exemptions of the estate tax law upon the death of one of the spouses. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), who represents a state where same-sex marriage
will be available next week, emphasized the scal reasons for repealing DOMA and predicted that lifting the anti-gay law from the books would, on balance, likely increase federal revenue. According to Schumer, in 2004 the Congressional Budget Ofce found that DOMA repeal at the time would have increased revenues by less than $400 million a year from 2005 through 2010, and by $500 million to $700 million annually from 2011 through 2014. I think that there are three fundamental principles at stake here, Schumer continued. Repealing DOMA makes good scal sense, it respects states rights to make their own determinations about marriage, and it treats all married people the same. Its fair, it makes sense, and its time. The sole committee member to speak out against DOMA repeal during the hearing was Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), ranking Republican on the committee. Grassley, who represents a state where same-sex marriage is legal, said he opposes the Respect for Marriage Act because he believes marriage should be reserved for one man and one woman. The bill before us today is entitled the Respect for Marriage Act, Grassley said. George Orwell would have marveled at the time. A bill to restore marriage would restore marriage as it has been known one man, one woman. That is the view of marriage that I support. This bill would undermine, not restore marriage by repealing it. Grassley and Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) were the only Republican senators who made an appearance at the DOMA hearing. Grassley was the only GOP committee member who asked questions of the witnesses. Witnesses who married someone of the same-sex testied about how DOMA negatively affected their relationship or their ability to receive benets after the death of their spouse. The hearing took place on the heels of an announcement from White House Press Secretary Jay Carney on Tuesday that President Obama supports the Respect for Marriage Act. I can tell you that the president has long called for legislative repeal of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, which continues to have a real impact on the lives of real people families, friends and neighbors, Carney said. He is proud to support the Respect for Marriage Act introduced by Sen. Feinstein and Congressman Nadler, which would take DOMA off the books once and for all. This legislation would uphold the principle that the federal government should not deny gay and lesbian the same rights and legal protections as straight couples. President Obama has previously said he supports legislative repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, but has yet to come out in support of the Respect for Marriage Act, which is the specic measure pending before Congress that would repeal the law.
During the hearing, Grassley erroneously said that Obama until Tuesday was a supporter of DOMA. During the 2008 campaign, Obama made full repeal of DOMA one of his campaign promises.
House members also testied on both sides of the Respect for Marriage Act. Two Democratic members Reps. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), the sponsor of the bill, and John Lewis (D-Ga.) favored DOMA repeal, while Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), a lawmaker known for his anti-gay views, opposed it. Nadler maintained that not just samesex couples but children being raised by LGBT parents are among those who are affected by the discrimination of DOMA. No legitimate federal interest in the welfare of children is ever advanced by withholding protection for some children based on the desire to express mild disapproval of their parents, Nadler said. It dees common sense to claim that its necessary to harm or exclude the children of married same-sex couples in order to somehow protect the children of opposite-sex couples. Similarly, Lewis expressed disbelief that Congress has yet to act on something as fundamental as allowing Americans the right to marry the person they choose. I nd it hard to believe that in the year 2011, theres still the need to hold hearings and debate on whether or not to allow people to marry the one they love, Lewis said. Lewis said DOMA imposes similar discrimination that blacks endured in the South under segregation and recalled the discrimination he faced as a child growing up in Southern Alabama. As a child, I tasted the bitter fruits and racism and discrimination, and I did not like it, Lewis said. And in 1996, when Congress passed the Defense of Marriage Act, the taste of that old bitter fruit lled my mouth once again. King, countering those arguments, based his testimony against repeal of DOMA on the basis that marriage is intended for procreation and thus should be reserved for one man and one woman because the union can produce children. The other side argues that you cant choose who you love and that the union between two men and two women is equal to that of one man and one woman, King said. These are the same arguments that are used to promote marriage between fathers and daughters, mothers and sons or even polygamous relationships. Expert witnesses on both sides of DOMA testied before lawmakers. LGBT advocates maintained DOMA should be repealed to lift the burden of discrimination against same-sex couples, while supporters of DOMA said the antigay law is necessary to keep marriage as between one man and one woman. Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, was among the LGBT
advocates who testied during the hearing. He addressed the nancial burdens DOMA imposes on same-sex couples. DOMA means that the many protections the federal government provides for the health and nancial security of American families remain out of reach for same-sex couples and their children, Solmonese said. Same-sex spouses of federal employees and active members of the military are denied access to health insurance coverage and a host of other benets. Even when private sector companies voluntarily provide spousal health benets, they are taxed, making it nancially burdensome if not impossible for gay and lesbian couples to make use of these fair-minded policies. Evan Wolfson, president of Freedom to Marry, said DOMA carves out a gay exception in the way the U.S. government traditionally and currently treats married couples. DOMA divides those married at the state level into rst-class marriages for those the federal government prefers and second-class marriages for those the federal government doesnt like, Wolfson said. But in America, we dont have second-class citizens, and we shouldnt have second-class marriages either. Arguing in favor of DOMA, anti-gay advocates maintained the importance of keeping marriage between one man and one woman. Austin Nimrocks, senior legal counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund, said the purpose of family and relationships is to procreate and raise children. Accordingly, from the lexicographers who have dened marriage, to the eminent scholars in every relevant academic discipline who have explained marriage, to the legislatures and courts that have given legal recognition and effect to marriage, they all demonstrate that an animating purpose of marriage in every society is to increase the likelihood that procreative relationships benet society, Nimrocks said. Marriage between a man and a woman is a long standing, world-wide idea that is a building block of society. Edward Whelan, president of the Ethics & Public Policy Center, warned that DOMA repeal could require the federal government to recognize not only same-sex marriages but also polygamous relationships. If the male-female nature of traditional marriage can be dismissed as an artifact and its inherent link to procreation denied, then surely the distinction between a marriage of two persons and a marriage of three or more is all the more arbitrary and irrational, Whelan said. Its doubtful that any further sliding down the slippery slope would be necessary to get to polyamory: unlike the novelty of same-sex marriage, the polygamous version of polyamory has been widely practiced throughout history and is therefore arguably up the slope from same-sex marriage.

Campaign nance records show that Baldwin has already amassed more than $1 million for her House re-election race, which shes expected to use for a Senate race. Rep. Ron Kind (D-Wisc.), who reportedly is considering challenging Baldwin for the Senate nomination in a Democratic primary, has raised far less money than Baldwin, and reported $478,000 cash on hand last week. Nearly all observers say Baldwin would only back down from a Senate race if former Wisconsin Sen. Russ Feingold enters the race. Feingold, a champion of progressive causes for Wisconsin Democrats, lost his re-election bid last year to Republican Ron Johnson. He has hinted that hes not likely to run for the seat being vacated by Kohl. Wolfe said he expects nearly 200 qualied LGBT candidates will be running in the 2012 election on the federal, state and local levels, a development that will prompt the Victory Fund to activate its network of LGBT donors nationwide. Well continue to see more candidates running for higher levels of ofce, which, of course, means higher levels of investment, he said. Andy Tobias, treasurer of the Democratic National Committee, said the DNC and Obama for America, the presidents re-election campaign, will be doing all of their fundraising including fundraising within the LGBT community through a joint committee called Obama Victory Fund 2012. Tobias, whos gay, said all of the other races seeking support from the LGBT community are important and he hopes others capable of making contributions will try to support them all. But he said only the race for president will determine who gets to shape the Supreme Court going forward, which will be the nal word on our equality. Added Tobias, And only one race will determine whether the entire federal government sees us basically as allies deserving of support or citizens whove already gained too much equality that needs to be rolled back. We simply have to keep the White House. According to Tobias, the Obama Victory Fund effort is aimed at registering and turning out a huge number of progressive-leaning donors through 60 eld ofces and more such ofces to come. Thus he said this effort would help all of the other LGBT-related races by bringing supportive voters to the polls. So in my view, all of us should support the national effort in a very big way, even as we support other races, he said. Among those agreeing with Tobiass assessment is gay philanthropist Bruce Bastian of Utah, who has made large contributions to Democratic candidates and LGBT advocacy groups and causes for nearly a decade.
Rep. TAMMY BALDWIN is expected to formally announce her candidacy for the Senate later this summer in a race that could cost as much as $20 million.

I am not well versed on all of the races or ballot measures, Bastian told the Blade this week. That said, I believe the most important goal for the LGBT community in 2012 should be to re-elect President Obama. Why? Just look at the alternatives! The Human Rights Campaign has already endorsed Obamas re-election bid and is expected to continue its past practice of contributing campaign funds to LGBT-supportive candidates through its political action committee. The HRC PAC contributed just over $800,000 to candidates in 2010 and just under $1.1 million to candidates in 2008, according to HRCs vice president for communications, Fred Sainz. The 2012 election year provides our community with a number of opportunities, including the successful reelection of our president, and a number of vulnerabilities, Sainz said. Unfortunately, the one ingredient that all of them share is the need for nancial resources to be successful, he said. We will continue to monitor the landscape, work closely with our partners on these various contents and will make smart and realistic investments at the appropriate time. Evan Wolfson, executive director of the marriage equality advocacy group Freedom to Marry, said the appropriate
time to address the expected marriagerelated ballot measures is now. He is calling on LGBT contributors to help raise money for the defeat of a ballot measure in Minnesota, where marriage equality opponents are asking voters to approve a state constitutional amendment dening marriage as a union only between and man and a woman. In Oregon and Maine, LGBT rights groups are taking steps to place on the ballot initiatives calling for overturning existing same-sex marriage bans. The proposed ballot measure would also put in place laws to give same-sex couples the legal right to marry. Ballot measures seeking to ban samesex marriage are also a possibility in Maryland and North Carolina in 2012. A ballot measure in Maryland is only expected to take place if the state legislature votes to legalize same-sex marriage, a development that LGBT advocacy groups and supportive lawmakers say is a possibility. Its unfortunately too early to be sure if were going to have enough money but its not too early to be doing the work, said Wolfson, in discussing the effort for winning marriage equality rights in Maine and Oregon and defeat marriage bans in the other states.
So we really need to step up and invest in the early persuasion and organizing that are the key to winning, Wolfson said. I strongly encourage funders, large and small, to make the best use of the money and time the most crucial element beginning now so we can move hearts and minds in advance of the end game. Thats how we win. The two co-founders of eQualityGiving. org, an LGBT political donors group, said they plan to follow the same process for advising and guiding LGBT donors in 2012 as they have in past election years. Juan and Ken Ahonen-Jover, a Miamibased couple, said their organization sets specic criteria related to the level of support a candidate must express on LGBT issues before the group places that candidate on its list as a possible recipient for contributions from LGBT donors. We want them to support all of the criteria, said Juan Ahonen-Jover. We base our recommendations on their positions on our issues, he said. He said the group doesnt keep track of how much money its members give to candidates but he believes donors afliated with the group contribute a sizable amount of money to congressional and state legislative candidates throughout the country.

To hear the presidents progressive critics describe Obamas rst term, youd think it was George W. Bush all over again. From former Army Lt. Dan Choi to the folks at Equality Matters to a horde of disgruntled liberal bloggers, Obama cant catch a break. Hes anti-equality because he wont publicly endorse marriage. He didnt repeal Dont Ask, Dont Tell fast enough. His Justice Department cant be trusted. Rather than praise Obama and others responsible for scheduling this weeks rst-ever Senate hearings on repealing the Defense of Marriage Act, Choi slammed the process, complaining that the scheduled witnesses for the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing are exclusively white and privileged. Richard Socarides, president of Equality Matters, said Obama should stop trying to have it both ways by remaining in opposition to same-sex marriage while saying his position could evolve as he demonstrates support for married samesex couples in other ways. When he says his position is evolving, hes not for same-sex marriage or against it, Socarides said. If the president wants to be on the right side of history, he needs to start leading on this issue now, or hes going to be left in the dust by other progressive leaders who are already on board. Socarides, of course, served as principal adviser on gay issues to President Bill Clinton from 1993-1999, when Clinton signed both Dont Ask, Dont Tell and the Defense of Marriage Act. Clinton didnt just sign DOMA, he bragged about it in 1996 campaign ads broadcast on Christian radio stations. And while Bill Clinton belatedly and reluctantly announced support for same-sex marriage, his wife, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, still describes marriage as between a man and a woman. Her opinion is factually wrong, given that same-sex marriage is the law in a handful of states, D.C. and a growing list of foreign countries. The idea that Clinton acolytes, includ-

ing former adviser Paul Begala, are joining the chorus of Obama critics is laughable. Sure, Obama ought to endorse marriage equality and he will sometime in the next two years. But he long ago left the Clintons in the dust when it comes to advocating for LGBT equality. Maybe its because I was in D.C. covering the entire George W. Bush era and remember all too well the dearth of positive gay news during that time save for a couple of momentous court rulings but the Obama criticism rings hollow. His list of pro-LGBT accomplishments is long and unrivaled for an American president. Is the culture of victimhood so entrenched in the LGBT community that we can no longer recognize a true ally when he invites us into the White House? Obama has told us repeatedly that we should continue to push and criticize and many of us have and will. But the mindless harping evolve already! will have one lasting result: to depress LGBT voter turnout and donor enthusiasm in 2012. The Human Rights Campaign was assailed for its early endorsement of Obamas re-election, an absurd criticism given the sorry lot of homophobes running for the Republican nomination. After three years of progress and polls shifting in favor of LGBT equality, Michele Bachmann and her allegedly heterosexual husband Marcus have brought the discredited practice of ex-gay therapy back to the headlines. One of the top GOP contenders thinks homosexuality is a choice and that we can be cured. Kudos to Truth Wins Out for going undercover to expose what we all suspected was happening at the Bachmanns counseling center: the discredited practice of reparative therapy. It would be entertaining if not for the incalculable damage ex-gay therapy causes to young people confused about
their sexual orientation. The revelation begs the question: Is Michele Bachmanns husband also a client? Has Marcus Bachmann undergone therapy to change from gay to straight? The Bachmanns have lied about the clinics work for years and denied accusations of trying to cure gay people. The video from TWO proves it. In it, a counselor tells the TWO investigator that its possible to be totally free of same-sex attraction. This would all amount to yet another GOP sideshow if not for new polls showing Michele Bachmann taking the lead over Mitt Romney in Iowa. The state of the Republican Party should be cause for great alarm, not just among LGBT people, but sensible Americans of all stripes. The Tea Party faction of the GOP is willing to force the United States into default, unleashing untold nancial disaster, all in the name of destroying President Obama and reclaiming the White House. The job of president wont be worth spit if the country defaults on its debts and were sent into another Great Depression, something the last Republican president nearly wrought. Mainstream Republicans, including those at Log Cabin, must denounce Bachmann and the media should continue to hound her at every stop until she directly answers questions about the dangerous practices underway at her familys counseling center. In addition, if federal money went to support this clinics work, the government must investigate and demand a refund. There is too much momentum in the LGBT movement now to risk a RomneyBachmann ticket prevailing next year. Obamas critics are right to demand more, but there comes a time in politics to sober up and deal with the reality of whats attainable and which battles require more time to win.

Some political pundits are talking about the Democrats taking back the House in 2012 but possibly losing the Senate. There is one Democratic candidate in a small swing state, population 2.7 million, with a real chance to win a Senate seat currently held by a Republican who is retiring. Shelley Berkley, the seven-term congresswoman representing the people of the 1st District of Nevada is that candidate. Berkley was rst elected in 1998 and has what most would concede is a safe seat. She represents the southern portion of Nevada including Las Vegas, which is where most of the states population resides. Her opponent in the race for the seat being vacated by Sen. John Ensign, a Republican, is Dean Heller, an ultraconservative member of Congress in his third term in the House. This race will be closely watched and will be expensive. In 2010 Majority Leader Harry Reid spent nearly $28 million defending his seat against Tea Party opponent Sharron Angle. Berkley estimates that her race will cost $18 million. Thats a lot of money to raise. But if we remember that this seat could be the difference in the Democrats holding the Senate you

She will work to reform our entitlement programs such as Medicare but will continue to oppose the Republican plan of issuing a voucher instead of guaranteeing all seniors health care. She knows that is the wrong way to do it. Berkley understands that limiting healthcare can have serious repercussions. An example would be having to tell a child who needs a prosthetic leg due to an accident or illness that they can only have one even when we know they will outgrow it or telling an adult on Medicaid that we will no longer pay for a needed prosthetic to enable you to go back to work and support your family. Berkley knows that balancing the fed-
eral budget on the backs of the poor and middle class in her state as Republicans want to do is wrong. She believes that we need to cut federal spending but at the same time we must insist that the rich and corporations pay their fair share. Shelley Berkley deserves the support of all Nevadans and fair-minded persons across the nation. She will be a senator who ghts to see that our nation guarantees civil and human rights for all people. Berkley understands that when we all assume our fair share of responsibility and when people running for ofce do so to bring us together rather than divide us, we will have better lives and our children will have a brighter future.

Re: Choi slams DOMA hearing witnesses as exclusively white and privileged (news, July 18) I think its important to remember that this is a governing body that does things such as considering it credible to hold hearings on transgender rights without including even a single actual transgender witness. Its hardly surprising and in fact is just yet more evidence that the D.C. bubble these people operate in, from Obama on down, is just as impenetrable and as out of touch with whats really going on in this country as ever. They dont understand us or our issues, nor do they have any real desire to. This is nothing more than political posturing by Democrats to win the favor and solidify the support of wealthy (read: white) gays and lesbians with an election approach-
ing. As is just about always the case with these people, theyre focusing on where the money is: With the wealthy, and that means with those who are white. Even Barney Frank has said openly (in this very paper, I believe) that DOMA is going nowhere in Congress until ENDA is dealt with, and that means its going to be on the shelf for a long time to come, if current indications are any guide. When youre dealing with people who cant even bring themselves to hold hearings with witnesses who actually represent the people and issues theyre discussing, much less actually take on those issues legislatively as they promise us so profusely that they will when they need our support at election time, this is what were going to get. Get used to it. Rebecca Juro Dan, maybe you should read the full witness list and written statement list.
There you will nd me, with my three adopted children, who are of various backgrounds, and none of us are privileged. We are on the list, as is Ron, because we lost my spouse and my childrens other mom last year to pulmonary brosis. She was a Navy vet. How about supporting those who have stood up and gone public and made an impact in our local communities rather than staging big splashy demonstrations? Ron lives in very conservative Indio, and I live in Riverside, and both couples fought Prop 8 on the home front while facing illness and then death. This is a time to stand together, not to pick a ght. If DOMA goes down, then we all win our civil rights. Go support Ron he is aged and grieving and stressed. Be a community. Jill Johnson-Young If Choi became a supporter of HRC, he would have received HRC President
Joe Solmoneses e-mail asking people to share their story so he can tell Congress. Solmonese understands its not all about him, something Choi needs to learn. Until then, stop being a tool or just go away. HRCSupporter I second what Jill Johnson-Young and HRC Supporter have already said here. This is a time to be standing together and not be trying to cause trouble and division within our community. Dan Choi: you need to have the chip on your shoulder removed before the weight of it destroys you. I feel sorry that you feel the need to criticize even those whose actions would make this country a better place for you to live and be accepted. Janice Dan Choi is becoming the gay rights version of Cindy Shaheen. Take a break buddy, we got this, really. Bludhurst

Protecting their assets should be important to them. When asked about his skin care practices, Scott stated that he simply washes with soap and takes showers. What about SPF? Nope. Scott says matter-of-factly, I usually get burned once real bad and then, thats it. This is clearly the laissez-faire approach to skincare. Buchness seems to realize the value of a great tan and offered an unorthodox recipe for achieving that extra-browned look. I usually use Diet Coke and baby oil together, baste in the sun, get some color, he said. Diet Coke and baby oil? That approach conjures
images of Kramer from Seinfeld rubbing butter on his body and baking in the sun. Like many other things in life that seemingly make us feel good but certainly can have negative side effects, your daily sun exposure is best enjoyed in moderation. To minimize damage to your skin, experts recommend avoiding exposure during the peak hours of noon to 2 p.m.; applying sunscreen every two hours and after swimming or excessive sweating; and wearing hats and sitting in the shade. Its also important to remember that sunscreen prevents burns, but it does not prevent cancer. Sometimes after fluctuations in weight the tissues of the abdominal wall lose their elasticity and natural turgor, becoming lax and flaccid. The person may have localized accumulation of fat in the abdomen that they cannot get rid of despite exercise. Striae (stretch marks) may cover the skin of the lower abdomen and occasionally go as far as the mid-abdominal area. The purpose of abdominoplasty is to eliminate many of these deformities and to give the abdomen a tighter, firmer, and more pleasing contour.

majority of oral vitamin supplements are more benecial than topical preparation, topical vitamin C and E are among the few that are very effective topical agents for the skin. Vitamin E can be an effective emollient and skin protectant. In addition to its anti-oxidative effects, vitamin C or L-ascorbic acid stimulates collagen production and inhibits the breakdown of collagen; has chemical properties to lighten the skin; displays photo-protective properties and is anti-inammatory in nature. When taken in combination, vitamins C and E provide double the antioxidative properties and therefore, are twice as effective. Retinol, a topical source of vitamin A, is an extremely benecial vitamin for problem or acne-prone skin and treating the signs of aging. Carrots, among other vegetables, are a high source of vitamin A. Clinical studies have shown that retinol is benecial for treatment of ne lines, discoloration and rough skin texture. Niacinomide (niacin-vitamin B3) is plentiful in meat, sh and wheat and is benecial for dry skin and wound healing. It is also photoprotective and prevents photoaging. It is also used in dermatology for the treatment of acne and has properties that reduce oil production. Ferrulic acid is an iron derivative with signicant photoprotection properties. It is used in anti-aging serums. Zinc has natural antiseptic properties and is used in the treatment of bacterial and antiinammatory skin conditions. Vitamin D is used to fortify milk and is found in large quantities in sh oil. Fish oil is an essential free fatty acid that improves circulation in the body and to the skin, hair, and nails. Did you know that the most prescribed anti-aging preparations are retinols (vitamin A) and vitamin C. Tired of people asking are you mad or angry about something? Do they perceive tension in your face? One of the most common involuntary facial expressions is frowning. Frowning can make us appear unapproachable because people may think that you are angry or mad about something. Persistent frowning can lead to permanent etched lines in the skin between the eyebrows. The most popular solution is to relax the muscles that cause us to frown. This is achieved by ve tiny needle injections to the muscle between the eyebrows with botulinum toxin type A (Botox/ Dysport). Within days, the muscle relaxes thus preventing the muscle from fully contracting or frowning. To delay the signs of aging, most will be successful in prevention versus reversing the changes once they occur. For people in their 30s, cosmeceutical skin care products and a diet rich in antioxidants are the entry point to addressing aging skin and body.

Once youre over 35 to 40 you want an anti-aging cream, Dr. Tina Alster, MD, professor at Georgetown University and director of the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery, Washington. She suggests products containing ascorbic acid, which is vitamin C. I love ascorbic acid. It has a lot of antioxidant properties. It reduces wrinkles and promotes collagen synthesis, she says. For Jonith Breadon, MD, Aesthetic Dermatology and Laser Surgery, Chicago, skin discoloration and wrinkles are the biggest patient complaints. She recommends a product containing hydroquinone to eliminate discoloration and one with hyaluronic acid to plump up skin. She also advises better skin care as the best line of defense. The rst thing I tell patients is to get a good sunscreen, Breadon says.

Its the show many gays love and love to hate. But many, of course, end up watching anyway. TVs gayest, guiltiest pleasure even its creators embrace the guilty pleasure label is back. A List: New Yorks second season debuts Monday at 10 p.m. on Logo. The entire season one cast returns for 11 new episodes, this time with a gal pal in tow. The Blade spoke with the cast and crew to get the lowdown on the new season, nd out what its like shooting the controversial series and ponder the shows appeal. The reality show, from the same people (True Entertainment) who brought Real Housewives of Atlanta to the air, debuted last October and follows the lives of ve gay (and one bi; six total) men in New York who claim theyre at the top of the Manhattan social totem pole through their lives, loves and career ventures. Reality show vet Reichen Lehmkuhl (he won the fourth season of Amazing Race and formerly dated Lance Bass) unofcially heads the cast. A central theme of the rst season was his tempestuous relationship with Brazilian model Rodiney Santiago, with troublemaker Austin Armacost never
missing an opportunity to keep their social pot stirred. It was a hit and helped, along with RuPauls Drag Race, put Logo, which debuted in 2005, on the pop culture map. The channel, owned by Viacoms MTV Networks, wont release ratings for the show but says its the second-highest rated show in the gay channels history (after Drag Race). A Dallas-based spinoff is planned for a fall debut. The shows reception has been wildly mixed. Some reviewers and fans say its great to see a gay-centric reality show instead of a mainstream show with token gay characters. Others have been
appalled at what they say is a supercial and stereotype-laden cringe fest. Still others agree with that assessment but admit its well constructed and addictive. Executive producer Dominic Pupa, whos gay, says the show is absolutely a guilty pleasure and says the critical drubbing doesnt mean its not successful at what its creators are aiming for. People roll their eyes all the time, but it captures peoples attention because its three things people with means and access who live in New York. That trifecta of factors means its fascinating to watch.

Theres something fun about people who are of means and do have access and discovering their lives can be just as exciting, dramatic and disappointing as yours. Plus its an ensemble show and people love ensembles because they can pick their favorite and tune in to see how theyre faring. Even the ones people hate I hate to say character because its reality, but in the sense of being a dramatic narrative, they do sort of become characters you still love to watch the ones you hate. Reichen, during a gym break (its legsand-shoulders day; he goes seven days a week), says he learned early on to let go of the naysayers. It was also hard, he says, watching the rst season and seeing how much was left out that would have added context to some of the less-attering scenes. I used to read the blogs but then half way through, I stopped. I got rid of my Google alert and I have become a much happier person, he says. I kind of live in my own world. There were so many comments about my relationship with Rodiney, they said I didnt care about him, I just brought him here and dropped him, but the truth is I made sure he had everything he needed and every opportunity he wanted and you know got him on his feet so he could pursue the stuff he wanted to do. It was such a slap in the face to watch this kind of play out in a very one-sided way Rodiney knew it too. He was like, Oh my god, he tried his best and Reichens not like that with me at all. Letting go of the negative energy has centered Reichen in other ways, he says. It helped him shrug off the full frontal nude photos that surfaced recently of him. He admitted the photos shot from the neck down are of him. If that had happened ve years ago, I think I would have shut myself into a mental institution, he says. But now my skin is so thick, I knew as soon as they surfaced, there would be every possible reaction. People would make fun of me, they would hate me, some people would like them you just get to a point where you can deal with it whether its good or bad. It totally sucks that they surfaced without my permission it was supposed to be a private thing, not something I broadcast for the whole world but I wasnt gonna pull an Anthony Wiener and lie about it. I was like, Yeah, its me, go ahead and start shooting your arrows and lets get it over with. I did mention that a lot of gay men do this kind of thing. I dont feel I did anything immoral or illegal. It just so happens that because it was me, people cared. Rodiney agrees the show complicated their dating life and admits he was nave about what he was getting into when he signed on. Last year was not easy for me, he

says. It was very intense. Its like I do the show and I forget I have the cameras there but its who I am and theyre shooting me. There were a lot of difcult people who liked to create drama in my life. Im the kind of person who just wants to live my life and not worry about somebody elses life. The couple broke up in November, shortly after the rst season started airing. Rodiney admits the show was a factor. Might they still be together without A-List? Id say it was half and half, he says. The show helped us to break up. We started to date and moved to New York together just six months into the relationship. It was very stressful for us. I cant handle that. Reichen says he and Rodiney are now friends in the best way possible and says the second season has been much easier to shoot since hes not in a relationship. Its been more focused on my business ventures, he says. When it comes to the drama, Ive been off the pedestal in the best way possible. New this season is 25-year-old Nyasha Zimucha, a straight entrepreneur and mega-achiever who runs her own business, hair-and-wig shop Embrace Your Hair. She was previously a judge on Little Miss Perfect. Shes a native of South Africa and came to the United States in 2001. Shes been in New York three years and knew A-List-er Mike Ruiz before joining the cast. She says her presence adds an
interesting punch to the new season. I think youre going to be very entertained at how some of these relationships develop, both positive and negative, she says. Its an interesting mix. Here you have this straight black girl with these six white, very handsome, very accomplished gay men. I think its historic because theres really been nothing like it on television. Youre going to see not just the ghts but the fun too, and I think that will be fun for the audience. The second season is still taping even as its rst episodes are set to air. Three are fully edited and in the can. Pupa says he doesnt know how long theyll shoot until he feels they have enough footage to bring the storylines to a sensible conclusion. So how organic or contrived are the scenarios and does editing, obviously a necessity, sometimes distort the narrative? Like on any show, we like there to be a beginning, a middle and an end, Pupa says. You want to see the cast members start somewhere and end somewhere else. For each one its different. Last season we were still shooting until 10 days before the last episode, which is really unusual for this type of show but its a lot more real than people think. They think its all very planned out but its really not. We ended last season with an argument between Austin and Reichen. That happened less than two weeks before it aired. None of the participants were contractually obligated to return for the second season. And the producers dont
tell them they have to meet with certain people or attend certain events. They take suggestions, though, and say they want to do their part to make the show as compelling as possible. Its a nice relationship with cast and production, Reichen says. We all understand the result is trying to create something that people will want to watch. Camera crews follow cast members six days per week for about 10 hours each day when the show is shooting. Pupa says the cast does its best to schedule things more likely to be interesting when the show is shooting and save the boring stuff like meeting with lawyers for their business ventures off-camera. Reichen, for instance, says he traveled much of the six months between the two seasons, though he did see all the cast members at least once during that time, most often at charity events, which he says draw little media attention. He guesses he was only in New York for about 60 days of that six months. Hes been busy prepping a new book and getting ready to launch a fragrance line. Often the best moments happen when the full cast is together. Thats when we have the greatest dynamic, Pupa says. Everybody loves Ryan. If hes throwing a party, you know the whole cast will be there. If Austin throws a party, we dont know who will walk through the door. And what about Austin is he really the troublemaker he seemed to be from season one? Reichen says theres some stuff between them that goes down in season two. Youll just have to watch, he says. Rodiney has a tougher assessment. I dont trust him and we cannot be friends, he says. Hes the kind of person I want him far away from my life. Hes evil and he does crazy stuff and I dont want him part of my life. Pupa says Austin is realitys answer to characters like Alexis and J.R. The golden rule of docu soap TV is that just because someone is hated doesnt mean theyre not watchable, he says. Its a Joan Collins thing for sure. Sometimes you dont want to admit to liking Austin, but you love watching him. Nyasha says the title is a bit of a misnomer and says the show ultimately works because its real and people from all walks of life can relate. What its really about is interesting, dynamic people living in New York, she says. Some have great careers and some aint doing nothing, but it unfolds as great TV because its honest. Even a young straight woman can relate to this or that. Some might think, I dont relate, what the hell am I doing watching this crap? but any level of negative is part of the drama of any relationship and theres not one person who doesnt have some level of drama. If there is, give me their number. Its just heightened because its on TV.
