EARNING POINTS BY SAVING WATER

"Banco Cyan" is a Brazilian initiative resulting from a partnership between the beverage brand American Beverage and the Brazilian state-owned water utility Sabesp. Modelled on a bank account, it awards points to people if they manage their water consumption more efficiently. The more people can stay below their average consumption levels, which is monitored by "Banco Cyan", the more eco-credits they can earn. The points accumulated can be redeemed for discounts at numerous participating partners. This helps consumers not just save on water, but also in their private expenditures.

MANAGING LOANS AND DEBTS ONLINE

The American company Cerebris has created a website called "I.O.U. Mate" which helps users to organise their loans and debts. After signing up, people can use their smartphone or computer to enter the starting and return dates for the things they loan out. It's also possible to set up a kind of standing order. The debts then appear automatically every month in a list. The system also enables the users to write comments on the various entries. This service is linked to Facebook and Twitter, so that communication with non-members is also possible.

SPERM BIKE HITS THE STREETS OF COPENHAGEN

The European Sperm Bank in Copenhagen has found an environmentally-friendly and attention-grabbing way of transporting samples from sperm donors to the city's fertility clinics by using a socalled "Sperm Bike" designed by the Danish company 10 Tons. This bike has a strong frame for carrying a cooling container in the shape of a sperm. On the one hand, the bike guarantees ecological transport of the sperm and, on the other hand, its unusual design ensures that it will not go unnoticed in the city, thereby generating a great advertising effect for the sperm bank.

USING BARCODES TO IDENTIFY ZEBRAS

Scientists at Princeton University and Chicago University have developed a system called "StripeSpotter" that identifies Zebras using their stripes. "StripeSpotter" takes a rectangular photograph of a zebra's fur and translates the stripes into black and white dots to give each Zebra its own identity code. The pattern of a zebra's fur is stored in a database and compared with others, in order to correctly order the photos of each animal. The system is to be used to control the populations of different types of Zebras and other patterned animals.

DISCOVER THE WORLD OF STREET ART WITH THE SMARTPHONE

The American director Jon Reiss recently teamed up with the Monarch Convergence Group to develop a mobile app called "Bomb it", which enables users all around the world to discover street art. The application is for the iPhone and Android smartphones and contains a thirty-minute documentary about graffiti, directed by Jon Reiss. The app takes the photos uploaded by users and stores them in a database, geo-tagging the images and storing them in a public archive of street art and graffiti from around the world. WITHDRAWING CASH USING ONLY YOUR PHONE

First National Bank from South Africa has collaborated with "FNB's Cellphone Banking" to establish a mobile service for making withdrawals from cash machines without a bank card, using nothing but the mobile phone. A mobile application enables customers to locate a machine and also sends them a temporary PIN which authorises them to access their account without their bank card. For security reasons, the PIN must be used within 30 minutes of receipt and it can be used only once.

TIME-ZONE ELECTRO MUCIC WITH KRAFTWERK'S IPHONE APP

The American audio artist Norman Fairbanks has teamed up with the German pop group Kraftwerk, the pioneers of electronic music, to develop a new application for the iPhone and iPad called Kling Klang Machine No 1, which uses GPS to play time-zone-specific compositions. PAYING IN A SINGLE SWIPE

The Spanish bank La Caixa has partnered with Visa on the Balearic islands to test a payment system called "Visa payWave", which enables users to pay simply by holding their credit card over a device. Payment at contact-free POS terminals in shops and restaurants is thereby made much faster and easier. This is particularly practical for small payments up to 20 euros; a PIN number is required for larger amounts. People who sell low-cost goods or food also benefit from this payment system. What's more, the card can be used to buy tickets on public transport in Palma de Mallorca.

BANK TRANSFERS BY PHOTO

The Danish bank Danske Bank has included a feature in its new app that makes it easier for people to pay their bills. Users no longer need to type in all the payment details by hand, as this app allows them to take a photo of the relevant parts of the bill showing account numbers and other information. The app recognises this data and then processes the transaction. Besides this feature, the app also offers the more conventional bank services, such as providing account statements and information on exchange rates.

GIANT QR CODE MADE OF PAINT CANS

The French bank AXA has created a giant QR code in Belgium, consisting of thousands of paint cans, and installed it on a huge billboard. The link connected to the QR code and accessible by the smartphone informs passers-by about the building project behind the billboard. This campaign highlights just how freely and creatively QR codes can be designed and implemented. It is also a great way to make dull information, such as the funding of a new building, seem exciting and fresh.

APPLICATION RECOGNISES VALUE OF MONEY

"Money Reader" is an application developed by the American company LookTel which can help the visually impaired to identify bank notes correctly, quickly and easily. The user just has to hold part of the note in front of the camera on a smartphone and then immediately hears a voice stating the note's value. Even when the note is in the person's hand and only briefly seen by the camera, the object recognition system is still capable of identifying it correctly.

BACKGROUND NOISE KEEPS DISCUSSIONS PRIVATE

The Japanese audio company Yamaha has developed a new device called the "VSP-1 Noise Generator", which helps to keep conversations in public places private. When discussing private matters at hospitals, pharmacies or banks, for example, people generally don't want others to overhear what they are saying. This little 3.2 Watt box from Yamaha offers eight different sounds, such as a babbling river, a forest or urban clutter, to help users to mask what they are talking about.

SENDING FRIENDS DRINKS COUPONS TO THEIR PHONES

With a mobile app called "frinxx" from the Dortmund-based start-up sixunity, users can send their friends drinks coupons directly over their mobile phones. The user goes online to select a drink for his friend or friends, and then pays for it via PayPal, credit card or bank transfer. He then receives a coupon which he can send to his friend as a code in a text message, e-mail or via Facebook using the "frinxx" system. At the same time, the gift coupons are announced on Twitter and Facebook. This advertising effect gives bars a compelling reason to join in this online service.

USING GESTURES TO CONTROL SHOP WINDOW

The creative agency VIVID Interactive recently developed an interactive shopping display screen for a shopping centre in Moscow, which uses Microsoft's Kinect technology. Shoppers can use gestures to navigate their way through all the information in the display and zoom in on individual images using their hands. This interactive shop window is ideal for use in advertising: for example, a Moscow bank used the display to offer a chronological presentation of its history by enabling people to zoom in on the various stages of the company's development.
