SEMESTER I

Electric Drive System Basic concepts, characteristics and operating modes of drive motors, four quadrant drive, classification of load and its characteristics, DC motor drive, induction motor drives. Digital Signal Processing Introduction to digital signal processing, discrete time signals and systems, convolution, correlation and autocorrelation, Discrete time Fourier transforms and its properties, z-transform and its properties, Frequency response of LTI system, digital filters, Programmable DSP processor, Architecture of TMS320C/F28X DSP processor and its programming, DSP used in power electronics applications. Power Electronic Devices and Circuits Construction and operation of power semiconductor switching devices, such as; SCR, GTO, Power BJT, Power MOSFET, IGBT and MCT. Commutation circuits of SCR, various trigger techniques, Phase controlled rectifier configurations, basic inverter circuits, choppers, resonant converter, SMPS using ICs. Numerical Methods and Optimization Techniques Errors, solution of polynomial equations, interpolation, numerical differentiation and integration, solution of simultaneous linear equations and ordinary differential equations, linear programming, network analysis, pert and CPM, short path problems, introduction to genetic optimization, set theory. Advanced Electrical Machines Permanent magnet materials and magnetic circuits, permanent magnet brushless dc motors, permanent magnet brushless ac motor, axial field permanent magnet motors, stepper motors, switched reluctance motors, New topologies of switched reluctance motors, bearingless switch reluctance motor, bearingless induction motor, doubly salient permanent magnet motor. Electrical Machines (Elective I) D. C. motors, induction machines, single phase induction machines, alternator, synchronous motor, polyphase transformers. Modern Control Theory (Elective - I) State variable analysis, time, domain solution of state equations, state-space representation, controllability and observability, nonlinear systems, phase-plane analysis-phase plane and phase trajectory, Liapunov stability analysis, Popovs method. Communication Skills for Engineers Meaning and importance of communication skills, Introduction to technical writing, Memorandum, minutes of meetings, correspondence techniques-inviting experts, inviting quotation, complaint letters and letters of regret and adjustment, Summarizing technical material, Writing research papers. SEMESTER II

Modelling and Analysis of Electrical Machines Unified machine theory, generalized torque equation, performance and speed control of d.c. machine, induction machine and synchronous machine using generalized theory, Transformation methods (stationary, rotor and synchronous frames) and corresponding equivalent circuits. Parks transformations, drives and control techniques, concept of space vector. CAD of electrical apparatus Review of design process of transformers, rotating machines, electromagnets etc. Basic design methodology and engineering consideration, flow charts for design and design optimization of transformers, rotating machines, electromagnets etc. Finite element method of design, FE techniques and their applications for designing transformers, rotating machines, electromagnets etc, CAD programming using C language and MATLAB. Control of Electric Drives DC Motor Drive , Induction Motor Drive, direct and indirect field oriented control of induction motor, direct torque control, closed loop drive using sensor and sensorless operation Switched Reluctance Motor Drive, Sensor and sensorless control of SRM, Vector control of the PMSM drive, Direct torque control of PMSM drive, Sensor and sensorless control of PMBLDC and PMSM drives.

Analysis of Power Electronic Controllers Single phase and three phase ac voltage controllers, Concept of three-phase to single-phase and single-phase to three-phase cycloconverters. configuration of three-phase VSI and CSI, concepts of pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques, 1 and 3 , UPS, on-line, off-line and their design, analysis and design of electronic ballast. Minor Project A student is required to carry out project work. The project shall be on design and fabrication work of power electronics application. At the end of the semester, student will be required to submit a report of work done and will defend his/her work carried out before examiners High Voltage DC Transmission (HVDC) (Elective II) General aspects and comparison with A.C. transmission, HVDC thyristors, converter and inverter operation. Control of HVDC link. Interaction between AC and DC system. Harmonic generation and their elimination. Protections for HVDC system. Modelling of HVDC link for AC DC power flow. AC-DC system power flow solution techniques. Power Quality (Elective II) Concepts of non-linear loads and electric power conditioning, flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS), principles of series and shunt compensation, SVC, TCSC, static condenser (STATCON), static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) and unified power flow controller (UPFC), Passive filters, active power filters for harmonic and reactive power compensation in two wire, three wire and four wire ac systems, harmonic standards, DSP control in active filters and power supplies. Mechatronics Systems (Elective II) Introduction to mechatronic systems and components, principles and tools to build mechatronic systems, design and selection of mechatronic elements, robotics: review of serial robotic manipulators, classification of parallel robots, and algorithm for inverse and forward kinematics/dynamic analyses of parallel robots. Multi-Level Inverters for High-Power Induction Motor Drives (ElectiveII) Basic concept of general n-level inverter, comparison of multi-level inverter with their two-level number part (two-level inverter), advantages and disadvantages, scope and applications of multi-level inverters for high power induction motor drives, types of multi-level inverters: Neutral Point Clamped (NPC),capacitor clamped (flying capacitor), cascaded multi-cell (cascaded H-bridge), hybrid H-bridge, cascaded inverters, dual-inverter fed open-end winding induction motor structure, asymmetric dc-link structure, voltage and current controlled PWM techniques used for multi-level inverters, comparative analysis of various PWM control techniques used for multi-level inverters, problems of common-mode voltage generation and dc-link capacitor voltage unbalance in multi-level inverters and various mitigation techniques for these problems in multi-level inverters. Direct conversion drives using SGCT and IGCT. SEMESTER III Major Project: Part I The Major Project Part-I is aimed at training the students to analyze independently any problem in the field of power electronics and electric drives. The project may be analytical or computational or experimental or combination of them based on the latest developments in area mentioned. It should consist of objectives of study, scope of work, critical literature review and preliminary work done pertaining to the project undertaken. SEMESTER IV Major Project: Part II Major Project Part-II is a continuation of the work done by the student during Semester III. The student is required to submit the project report (thesis) as a partial fulfillment of the M. Tech. degree. The project report is expected to show clarity of thought and expression, critical appreciation of the existing literature and analytical computation and experimental aptitude of the student, as applicable.
