COURSE 1.01 (Paper 1): The Earth and its Environment Unit I : Study of Environmental Science- Scope and relevance of the study of the biosphere. Atmosphere: Definition, boundaries and characteristics of troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphere. Unit II : (i) Lithosphere : Basic concept (ii) Hydrosphere : Structure and physico-chemical properties of hydrosphere (water). Unit III : Soils: Origin and development of soil, soil profile, Physical, Chemical and Biological properties of soils. Soils of India, extent, distribution and characteristics of problem soils. Unit IV : Energy: Non-renewable (Conventional) sources of Energy - Fossil fuel, Hydro power, Nuclear power. COURSE 1.02 (Paper II): Biotic community, Dynamics Unit I : Population Ecology: Basic concept, population characteristics, population dynamics, population regulation, life tables. Ecology of Human population: Characteristics and growth form of human population, environment and aging. Unit II : Community Ecology: Basic concept, community structure, community organisation and characteristics, ecotone and concept of edge effect. Community Dynamics: Concept of ecology, succession, trends of succession and community retrogression, general process of succession, climax community. Unit III : Ecosystem: Concept and composition, production and decomposition, homeostasis. Concept of energy in ecosystem: Concept of productivity, food chains and food webs, trophic structure, ecological pyramids, energy budgets of plants and animals. Unit IV : Biogeochemical cycles: Hydrologic cycle, gaseous cycles and sedimentary cycles. Ecosystem modeling: Concept of model and its basic categories, model architecture, sensitivity analysis and parameter estimation. COURSE 1.03 (Paper III): Biotic Responses I Unit I : Concept of habitat, ecological niche and ecological equivalents; General Classification of habitats Fresh water habitat: Classification, lentic and lotic divisions, physico-chemical characteristics, Unit II Morphological and Physiological characteristics of flora Unit III Types, Morphological and Physiological characteristics of fauna found in fresh water habitat Estuarine habitat: Estuary and its physico-chemical characteristics, biotic communities of estuary and fisheries. Marine habitat: Division of sea, physico-chemical characteristics and flora and fauna of different Unit IV regions. COURSE 1.04 (Paper IV) ): Biotic Responses II Unit I : Terrestrial habitat: Characteristics of terrestrial habitat, biogeographical realms, biomes (Tundra and Antarctica, high altitude and alpine, forests, tropical savana, grasslands and desert). Unit II : Biotic responses to Environmental stress. Unit III : Biogeographical distribution of animals. Principals and concepts. Phytogeography: Descriptive phytogeography-vegetational zones, important forests types of Unit IV India, Interpretive phytogeography, principles and concepts of plant distribution.

COURSE 1.05: Practical I : Climatology: Measurements of various climatic factors: Light, temperature, humidity, wind speed. II : Lithosphere composition: Soil composition air, mineral, organic matter, soil profile-soil minerals. III : Physical characteristics- texture, structure, density, porosity. Physiochemical characteristics- soil reaction, acidity, alkalinity, sodicity, salinity, calcareousness, organic matter. Soil nutrient composition-total, available. Relationship between soil nutrient status and biomass production. Soil-micro-flora and fauna- isolation and identification of various microbes. IV : Environmental Stresses Environmental stresses and plant responses to stresses: Excess water, salinity and drought. Morphological and Anatomical adaptations of plants growing in such stress conditions. V : Practicals related to Environmental aspects of Physics. Zoology and Geology

Unit IV : Wildlife: Definition, ecological balance, importance of wildlife, cause of depletion and extinction of wildlife, wildlife management. COURSE 2.04: Biotic resources II Unit I : Fishery: Types, problems, managements-aquaculture Unit II : Biological diversity: Their types and importance, species richness and diversity. Hot spots of world and India Unit III : Natural and anthropogenic depletion/reduction of biodiversity Unit IV : Rare, endangered, vulnerable, threatened and near-extinct species, conservational efforts. COURSE 3.04 (Paper IV : Special problems of Environmental pollution and their management Unit I : Chemistry of modern environmental problems acid rain, Ozone layer depletion, Green house effects and climate changes. Genetic engineering and environmental management, Bioconversion of wastes into useful substances Unit II : Major, Natural, Accidental and Man made environmental disasters and their effects. Unit III : Microbes in the Environment: Microbes in the air, water, soil and food. Microbial toxins. Unit IV : Microbes in environmental monitoring: Biosensors, microbial control of pollution, microbes and human welfare. COURSE 3.05: Practical I : Air pollution: Monitoring air pollution effects on plants. COURSE 4.01 (Paper 1): Environmental toxicology I Unit I : Survey and classification of common hazardous chemicals in the environment. Unit II : Principals of transport of xenobiotics across biomembranes. Routes of exposures, biotic and environmental factors influencing absorption, biotransformation and excretion of xenobiotics. Factors effecting toxicity of xenobiotics Unit III : Principal of antidotal therapy Toxicity tests: Acute, subacute, subchronic and chronic toxicity tests. Skin and eye tests; behavioural, neurotoxic, reproductive, mutagenic and carcinogenic tests. Mutagenic and carcinogenic agents (Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and nitrosamines, organic solvents, alcohol, carbon tetra chloride. Anaesthetics (chloroform, ether, xylocaine). Tobacco chewing and smoking. Unit IV : Principals of biotransformation: Sites of biotransformation, biotransformation enzymes and biotransformation reactions for gaseous toxicants (CO2, CO, SO2 and nitrogen oxides), chemical contaminants (Dioxins and dibenzofurans). COURSE 4.02 (Paper 1I): Environmental toxicology II Unit I : Systemic toxicity I: Neurotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, and immunotoxicity Unit II : Systemic toxicity II: Cardiovascular toxicity, respiratory dysfunction and hypersensitivity Unit III : Toxicity of chemical pesticides: Their types, uses and harmful effects. Bio-pesticides: Their types, uses and advantage over chemical pesticides Unit IV : Heavy metal toxicity: Their sources and effects on life and environment, possible control measures COURSE 4.03 (Paper III): Environmental policy and management I Unit I : Environmental education: Objective and guiding principals of environmental education, environmental education programmes and public awareness Unit II : Environmental organization and agencies.
