Recently IEEE 802.15.4 has emerged as a type of transmission protocol for WSN (wireless sensor network) where minimization of energy consumption plays a key role. This paper addresses the MAC performance of the star-shaped IEEE 802.15.4 LR-WPAN non-beacon mode. Non-beacon mode adopts the unslotted CSMA/CA as a transmission mechanism. Many researches[3],[4],[5] of IEEE 802.15.4 MAC performance have dealt with slotted CSMA/CA by modeling the stochastic behavior of one device as a discrete time Markov chain. Unlike slotted CSMA/CA, the backoff slot unit time in unslotted CSMA/CA is not synchronized, so that the discrete time process can not be a tool for modeling unslotted CSMA/CA. Therefore, in this paper, we develop a new mathematical method using the theory of regenerative process[2] to analyze unslotted CSMA/CA. To our best knowledge, this is the rst study for non-beacon mode operating unslotted CSMA/CA. By modeling the stochastic behavior of a device as a regenerative process, we obtain the performance measures such as throughput, packet delay, packet loss probability and energy consumption of a device in non-beacon mode with unslotted CSMA/CA. The accuracy on the modeling of our system as regenerative process is validated by simulation for comparison. Analytical and simulation results can also used to determine the optimal number of devices while supporting the required QoS on the packet delay and the packet loss probability. Finally, we estimate the life time of battery analytically. REFERENCES 1. 2. 3. 4.
