Recognising and setting trends from the leader in innovation and technology for valve terminals
Successful automation today consists of three subject areas: pneumatics, electrical engineering and networking. Only those who master these areas and can easily combine them from a single source achieve the synergetic effects which go beyond todays standards, and set trends demanded by the tough industrial competition. As a leader in innovation and technology in the area of valve terminals, Festo also meets this challenge when it comes to fieldbuses, such as DeviceNet and Ethernet/IP. Find out for yourself on the following pages!

Networking concepts: fundamental for the world of fieldbus

Maximum productivity will be greatly influenced by industrial communication in the future. To control and analyse individual processes with high efficiency, it is mandatory that the communication levels, which are still often separated today, be networked. For example, with DeviceNet and Ethernet/IP. The control technology pyramid shows the different communication requirements on each individual level.

The general advantages The combination of DeviceNet and Ethernet/IP: overall, the most modern type of automation with specific advantages for each level. At the centre of networking: control platforms and technologies

Typical control platforms

Rockwell Automation Systems and services for drive, control and information technology, from components all the way to holistically integrated systems Typical products: Controllers: Allen Bradley ControlLogix and CompactLogix (modular PLCs) Software tools: RSNetWorx for DeviceNet (network configuration) and RSLogix5000 (PLC programming and configuration of Ethernet/IP)

Omron Systems for drive and control technology, as well as sensors and switching components. Typical products Controllers: CJ1 family Modular PLCs Software tools: Omron DeviceNet configurator (network configuration) and CX programmer (PLC programming)

The communication protocols:

DeviceNet DeviceNet communication is based on the broadcastoriented Controller Area Network (CAN), which was originally developed for the automotive sector in order to replace the expensive wiring used in vehicles with a secure and cost-effective network. The extensive demands on transmission reliability and interference immunity in vehicle construction and the functionality within large temperature ranges make CAN an ideal hardware base for data transmission in industrial automation. DeviceNet is characterised by its robustness and insensitivity to high temperatures and its high protection against interference.

Key features: Linear topology with branch lines Network length of several hundred meters Max. 64 field devices Max. 512 I/O for each device Network I/O data limited by DeviceNet scanner

Ethernet/IP EtherNet/IP (Ethernet Industrial Protocol) is an open industrial standard which is based on the public Ethernet, with standard communication modules, PC interface cards, cables, plugs, hubs and switches. EtherNet/IP was created due to high demand for standardised, Ethernet-based communication applications in the control area; it was also designed to facilitate interoperability of communication between different controller products.

Key features: Switched Ethernet topology Network length up to several kilometers Device identification based on IP addresses Number of slave connections limited by Ethernet/IP bypass modules. Usually 64 connections.

Remote diagnostics and remote maintenance of controls and devices from the office network Access via the network can be realised with CPX-FMT from various computers for more transparency without additional investments in the infrastructure Simple and cost-effective: project planning using the PLC Ethernet connection via the PC network Networking of applications and machines Ideal, thanks to data bandwidth and flexibility: Industrial Ethernet For decentralised control concepts: communication with a higher-order controller via DeviceNet or Ethernet/IP thanks to the remote control mode of the CPX fieldbus node

Storage of process and device information (documents, web sites) Extended device, machine and system information can be stored centrally on data servers within an Ethernet network. Status and diagnostic data can also be queried on the CPX terminal with Ethernet/IP via an installed web server. The CPX web monitor HTML software package is optimised for visualising the CPX terminal via a web browser. Fast and easy access from all computers

Use of Ethernet infrastructure components (wireless LAN) The existing infrastructure for industrial Ethernet makes integration in the automation environment or of special components for remote maintenance via the Internet (via VPN, for example) quick and inexpensive. CPX Ethernet/IP node on standard Ethernet technology is compatible with the infrastructure components.

Fundamentals of Ethernet/IP and DeviceNet

General DeviceNet works on the basis of the producer/consumer model, whereby the data source instead of the receiver is identified. Anyone requiring data from a specific source is capable of receiving data. If a device is configured to provide information in the event of a change of state, it sends a corresponding data packet to the network together with its device ID. In the network, anyone who requires this information can receive the data packet.

Change of cyclic state Data is only sent by the producer when the state of an object has changed. A heartbeat monitors the ready-totransmit and ready-to-receive states during transmission breaks. Communication Device data that is not time critical, e.g. data for a temperature sensor, is transmitted at less frequent but regular intervals. This keeps the bandwidth of the network free for timecritical devices. Explicit messaging Event-driven, non-recurring reading or writing of data from a specific station. Typically, device-specific diagnostic data can be processed with this.

The various communication methods support both single and multi-master structures. A controller can be a master for some of the slaves in the network while at the same time act as a slave for a higher-order master. Bit strobe communication Each of the max. 64 stations is simultaneously assigned one bit, which either acts as a request to send data or is used directly by the device as a base date.

Polled communication All devices with this communication setting are sent a data exchange request in a cyclic, predefined sequence.

28

Festo valve terminals configured with RSNetWorx from Rockwell Automation The supplied device-specific EDS files and icons simplify the process of device selection. The I/O size is read from the valve terminal and displayed as a device characteristic using the Device Parameter function. With the CDVI valve terminal, modular EDS files are also available.

The Omron DeviceNet variant is known as CompoBus D Festo valve terminals are assigned the I/O names of the Omro controllers using the CompoBus D configurator. This tool is also used to set the valve terminal data size and addressing.

ADR

Automatic Address Recovery. Automatically carries out the device configuration and parameterisation via the network after the connection has been established Defines the amount of data transmitted per second, determines the extent of the bus network Data is only transmitted after a change of state Common Industrial Protocol. The heart of DeviceNet and Ethernet/IP data transmission. Internal software architecture for communication interfaces. Built-in error memory of the CPX terminal, in which the 40 newest diagnostics messages in the fieldbus nodes are stored Handheld CPX terminal, access to all system data, such as parameters and diagnostics PC software for the CPX terminal, access to all system data, such as parameters and diagnostics via Ethernet or a CPX/USB adapter HTML software for visualising the system status and diagnostics from Industrial Ethernet CPX terminals Data is transmitted at certain intervals

ESD

Ethernet/IP bridge With Ethernet/IP, as opposed to DeviceNet, the term bridge is used instead of scanner since the PLC can directly access the field devices Explicit messaging Data access via fieldbus objects, which can be queried directly via the network from any position FDA Food and Drug Administration. The drug approval authority, part of the Department of Health in the United States Usually products which are free of copper and PTFE. Essential in the production of screens, for example.
