Cosmo has been on a gondola in Venice, a funicular train in Lake Como and rode the high-speed train from Rome to Milan, Diane Silver of Atlanta, Georgia, shared about her eight-year-old Havanese. A funicular train is a cable railway of sorts, moving in a tram-like fashion. By land or by sea, Fidos traveling frequently, as more modes of transportation open to canine, savvy travelers. Providing year-round ferry services, Casco Bay Lines allows dogs on their boats traveling from Portland, Maine, to islands such as Peaks Island and Little Diamond. With no weight restrictions, dogs of all sizes are permitted to board for a $4.10 fee. Director of Sales and Marketing for Casco Bay Lines, Caitlin M. Gildart, reported many islanders commute back and forth to Portland with their dogs while others take the ferry and head for the islands to walk, run or swim. Some dogs take to the skies and not by plane but rather, by hot air balloon. Bill Costen, president and CEO of Sky Endeavors, LLC, has had several dogs take balloon rides with their families over the years. A well-behaved dog who is with his owner makes a good candidate to go up, Costen said. From skyways to highways, Operation Roger is a nonprofit organization transporting needy pets across the country in the cabs of their trucks. As drivers perform their regular trucking duties, the dogs are taken to new homes or shelters for adoption. Show circuit and for-profit breeder dogs are not transported unless retired and altered. These unsung heroes give non-traditional transport a whole new meaning. Whatever means of transport is used for taking Fido from point A to point B, and all the pit stops in between, dogs are cherished family members and an integral part of our travels.
