My name is Sarah O'Donnell and I am the Coordinator for Religious Education here at S1. Paul. I would like to take this opportunity before school starts to tell you about the religious education programs we have available for the children and young people of our parish. Although the child's primary teacher and role model for faith formation is the parent, St. Paul offers several programs to help reinforce these teachings and practices. For our youngest children, ages 3 to 5 years, we are introducing the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) program (Levell) this year. This is a Montessori program based on biblical teachings and catholic practices. The children have the opportunity to not only learn about their faith, but to live this religious experience in the atrium. They will learn about such things as the church liturgical colors, all the items used in a mass such as the lectern and sacramentary, and even set up the altar. We currently have 54 children signed up for this program. We are also in the process of expanding this program to include grades 1-3 (Level II) in the fall of 2012, and grades 46 (Level III) in the fall of 2013. In the meantime, children in grades 1-6, will continue our current program which is the Blest Are We series by Silver Burdett. Classes for CGS and grades 1-6, meet on Sunday mornings from 9: 15 am to 10: 15 am. Our first class will be on Sunday, September 11. Our Youth Group, grades yth_12th, meet on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. During this time they enjoy a meal, social time with their peers, and bible study. The first Wednesday of the month we gather together for a youth mass where teens in the Youth Band provide the music and others serve as lectors and Eucharistic Ministers. Our teens also have an opportunity to be involved in fundraisers, service projects, and community social events throughout the year. Our first meeting will be Wednesday, September 14. If you have not already signed up your child for PRE, I strongly encourage you to do so as soon as possible so we can prepare enough materials. Early registration forms for returning students were sent out i,n July. For new families, there will be open registration in the back of the church after all masses next weekend, August 13-14. If you have any questions please contact me at the church office or email meatrel.edu@saintpaulcatholicchurch.com.
