MORTON TWP. Starting Saturday, residents of Morton Township will be able to drop off recyclables once a week to hopefully alleviate trafc from its previous once a month system. The township will now offer recycling every Saturday at the Morton Township Fire Station in Canadian Lakes. The move is in response to the overwhelming number of participants who would ood the station once a month, said township Supervisor Jim Quinlan. It became a logistic problem when everyone saved their recycling all month long for the one day. The quantity they had and the amount of stuff that was brought on that Saturday (became) a really safety issue, Quinlan said. We felt that the demand and the response was enough and we needed to look at some other alternative to eliminate the mass overow of cars and trafc. The township originally collected recyclables one Saturday a month to be delivered to the Big Rapids recycling center. The township has hired Allied Waste services to transport the recycling container to a Kent County recycling facility. The Kent County recycling facility uses a single-stream system, which allows residents to combine recyclables to be sorted later at the plant, said Gary Doudhett, operations manager at Allied Waste. Besides offering residents a weekly chance to recycle, Allied Waste also collects more materials than the previous program, Quinlan said. A complete list of acceptable items and how to prepare each item for recycling is available at the townships website at www.mortontownship.org. Items can be placed in clear plastic bags for easier sorting. All items should be relatively clean and heavy soil, residue and grease should be removed, Doudhett said. Employees will be on hand to help direct trafc and move cars through a single-le line in an orderly fashion. Although the program is designed for Morton Township residents, the township has reached out to other neighboring townships to participate in its program. Austin Township has participated for nearly a year. The township pays $150 a month to participate and it gives residents options where to recycle, said Austin Township Supervisor Kenneth Vredenburg. Some residents use it and others dont because they go to Big Rapids but there are few that use because they like the availability of it, Vredenburg said. If (Austin Township residents) use it more, then we might think about contributing more money. When the program was offered once a month, the container would become full and the program would often shut down early, Vredenburg said. He hopes offering it weekly will change that. Residents in Morton and Austin townships can recycle from 9 a.m. to noon every Saturday at the re station located at 8260 100th Ave. in Canadian Lakes. For more information, contact the township at (231) 972-7138.
to Grand Rapids just got easier thanks to a new shuttle service starting Aug. 29 at Ferris State University. Through a partnership with The Rapid, the shuttle bus will make four trips a day, from The Rapids Central Station in Grand Rapids to Ferris Big Rapids campus. Meijer in Cedar Springs will be the routes only other stop. The rst bus will leave Grand Rapids at 6:25 a.m. and the nal bus will return to Grand Rapids at 9:05 p.m. It will run Monday through Friday. The bus is intended to help students and faculty in Kent County easily make the commute to Ferris main campus. The service also is open to the public. The admissions staff identied a group of potential students in the Grand Rapids area that showed interest in attending (Ferris) but transportation was a limiting factor for them, said Mike Hughes, associate vice president for Physical Plant, in a February meeting discussing the bus service. Surveys were distributed to 4,600 potential students, current students, faculty and staff to gage interest. About 8 percent of the surveys were returned. Based on feedback from residents in Kent County, Ferris decided to go ahead with the shuttle, said Ed Shepard, director of auxiliary enterprises. The service is estimated to cost $100,000 annually, which will be paid by the university and rider fare. A shuttle bus card, good for one semester, will cost $700. Individual rides are $8 each way. We want to set a price point where you get people to utilize it, yet you want to cover expenses, Shepard said, adding it is difcult to predict ridership at this point. The success of the bus service will be evaluated after two years. There is no set number of riders needed to deem the service successful, Shepard said. Based on a student who drives to Grand Rapids three times each week, it would be cheaper to purchase a shuttle bus card, Shepard said. LouAnn Kirkpatrick, a student services representative in the Admissions Ofce, was pleased to hear the shuttle service would begin in the fall semester. Its a wonderful idea, especially for students to have housing (in Big Rapids) and still be able to take a program (in Grand Rapids), she said. Student Dustin Karpovich, who will graduate in December with a degree in resort management, was in favor of the bus, but thought the price of a shuttle card would deter some students. Money is an issue for commuting altogether. ($700) seems like a big bill all at once, he said. Frankly, people can probably carpool for cheaper. To calculate how much your commute costs and for more information about Ferris shuttle and its schedule, visit www.ferris. edu/htmls/current/shuttlebus.
A rings setting is as important as its diamond because the setting is what displays and secures the stone. Platinum provides an ideal setting as it is stronger than other precious metals, which means that you dont have to worry about losing the center stone with everyday wear. Also, platinum is a naturally white metal, allowing the diamond to sparkle even brighter. Did you know that a platinum engagement ring will last forever? Since platinum is so durable and loses little metal over time, the ring will undoubtedly become a family heirloom that can be passed down for generations to follow. And platinum engagement rings are surprisingly affordable. Contrary to popular belief, they are available in a wide range of price points, starting at around $1,000 at BlueNile.com. Know Her Style Before you go to the jewelry store, know your future ances style, personality and lifestyle since there is a ring to suit her perfectly. For example, a woman with a hands-on job, like nursing, might prefer a simple band with a secure setting, while a woman who has a less active job might want something more intricate. A woman with classic style will want a different band design than a trend-setting fashionista. A classic polished platinum band from Michael Barin will suit a girl with more traditional tastes, while a birth stone of colored diamonds on an embellished band like one from Suna Bros. will look bold and unique, says jewelry and style expert Michael OConnor. To gure out her ring size, press one of your girlfriends rings in a bar of soap until it leaves a mark. You can also put one of her rings on your own hand, mark where it falls on your nger and have the jeweler measure that area, suggests OConnor. How to Propose Some women want a public proposal in front of friends and family, while others want something private and special. In either case, your ance will remember the day for the rest of her life. Think about what your ance likes, and where and how you met. For more tips on proposing marriage or choosing an engagement ring, visit www.engagementguide.com or www. preciousplatinum.com.

While the image should relate to the overall topic, it doesnt have to do so literally. This gives you the artistic freedom to have fun with your image search. It also will help you remain open to inspiration as you search. As to effective image searches, sifting through millions of images on the Internet via a simple search engine query is highly ineffective. The chances of nding something the right size, shape, resolution and quality are low. Copyright and privacy issues also arise -- particularly if the photos will be used commercially. Fortunately, there are places to get inexpensive imagery that can be legitimately used for a whole host of purposes. Stock pictures can be purchased from places like www.photos.com for as little as a dollar or two.
For blog posts, budget-sensitive projects and nonprots, Photos.com offers easy searching from numerous categories in several subject areas. You can buy a single image, packs of images at various resolution sizes or even annual subscriptions. For images to be used for an extended time, as in a website, or a marketing brochure, more highly art-directed imagery can be found at www.iStockphoto.com. Both sites have powerful search engines that make short work of nding the perfect image.
Image Is Everything
(NewsUSA) - Today people are bombarded with more information than they can process. Simultaneously, websites, blogs and social media have the public trained to consume information in bullet points, sound bytes and tweets containing 140 characters or less. No matter how you are trying to get your message across, whether through social media, a website or blog, an ad or even a presentation, the best way to pique someones interest is through compelling imagery. Photos must be engaging enough to get someone to focus on what youve got to say. When choosing an image, it pays to be selective. Great images have the power to inform, inspire, confuse, shock, delight, empower, enrage and enlighten. Start by thinking about things like:
The benets of bullying prevention programs include freeing teachers to teach, instead of spending their time disciplining students. These programs also cut down on chaos in the classroom and foster a positive learning environment.
Michelle Molina, president and CEO of PeaceBuilders says that Children need to be given the skills so they can solve these problems and adults need to be the guides on the sides. According to the nonprot organization Child Trends, PeaceBuilders has been found to work in increasing conict resolution skills and reducing aggression and bullying. PeaceBuilders is a program designed to foster a positive environment not only in schools, but at home and in the community. The program is already in place in thousands of schools across the United

States, where it is successfully used to prevent and decrease bullying and other disruptive behavior.
PeaceBuilders is designed to combat bullying early through a combination of school-based programs, parent training and community outreach. Parents are a critical part of the program, ensuring that practices are duplicated at home. The PeaceBuilders program can be tailored to ages and developmental levels from preschool through high school.
EyeCare America, a public service program of the Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, is raising awareness about AMD and its potential window to health through your eyes. Imagine seeing black holes in your eld of vision instead of your family, your garden or your favorite book. More than 10 million Americans suffer from AMD. AMD occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow under the eyes macula, where the sharpest, central vision occurs. Its the leading cause of vision loss for those 65 and older. While not curable, AMDs advancement can be delayed and treated, leading to many more years of healthy vision for those who detect it early through an eye exam. This same blood vessel damage can also indicate risk for heart attack or stroke -- as much as 8 to 10 times greater. An Australian study noted that among those whose health was followed for a number of years, subjects with AMD had more than double the incidence of heart attack or stroke. Eye exams let patients know of increased risk for other serious health problems. EyeCare America provides eye exams at no out-of-pocket cost to people 65 and older and offers online medication assistance information. Eye exams are provided by a corps of nearly 7,000 volunteer ophthalmologists across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Those interested in the program can visit www.eyecareamerica.org to see if they are eligible. The organizations online referral
center also enables friends and family members to nd out instantly whether their loved ones are eligible to be matched with a volunteer ophthalmologist. EyeCare America is designed for people who are U.S. senior citizens or legal residents who havent seen an ophthalmologist in three or more years. Additional information can be found at www.eyecareamerica.org.
worthy organizations receive the funding they deserve. Since last year, Americans have chosen to award more than 20 million dollars to community-supportive ideas that receive the greatest number of votes through this landmark fundraising effort.
The program works by rst identifying risk factors for bullying, including violent or aggressive behavior, drug use and tobacco use. PeaceBuilders provides tools to foster civil behavior and to discourage disruptive behavior. Then a roadmap is created that includes regularly praising children and teens for good behavior at school and at home, while discouraging bad behavior. Involving parents in the behavior improvement before adolescence helps communities create a way of life that encourages people to be nicer to each other. visit www.
Take Central Elementary Gardens for example, started by teacher Christy Cuthbert, who used the $25,000 Pepsi Refresh Project grant to create an outdoor learning center and garden for her school. Students not only get their hands dirty in the garden, but also learn skills to promote and manage a community farmers market. Theres also the Brigits Bounty started by a Colorado resident, Brandi-Lynn Greig. She used her $25,000 grant to provide fencing, seeds, trees, and educational programming for a community garden, which provides fresh vegetables to over 200 families in need each month.
Other ways to get involved are to join an already established community garden or farm in your area. From planting to managing sales, there are several ways you can contribute.
(NewsUSA) - Some say the eyes are windows to the soul. But did you know that the eye disease age-related macular degeneration (AMD) can also indicate increased risk of heart attack or stroke?
Every action helps to create major impact on communities, whether you choose to vote for your favorite idea or put your own idea into action. Even as the summer days start to shorten and we head back to school, Pepsi will continue to challenge Americans with the next question, asking, How would you make learning fun? No matter the season, ideas can always inspire change in communities and the Pepsi Refresh Project encourages just that.
