USER'S INTERFACE
USER'S CONSOLE
The EM ServiceOn Optical Element Manager Software can run on an X-Terminal or on the Console of the computer (if it is equipped with high resolution monitor). The X-Terminal is a graphic terminal which is connected to the EM Network Server by means of an ethernet LAN (Refer to Description Installation for more details). The X-Terminal consists of the following parts: n Color monitor n Base Unit containing the digital electronics printed-circuit assembly and the Ethernet module n Keyboard n Mouse

THE EM DESKTOP
The HP-UX CDE/VUE forms the ServiceOn Optical Element Manager working area. The organization of the facilities offered by the desktop can be divided into two basic "objects": Windows and Icons. The HP Desktop is available when EM is run directly on the console of the HP Workstation. Following is shown an example of configuration of the HP tool bar, where are available some general purpose commands and the EM icon (on the left side of the tool bar). It is however possible to configure the CDE/VUE in a different way (Refer to the HP-UX Documentation). Each operation opens a window in the desktop displaying the data relative to the operation. The desktop itself can be considered as the basic window of the EM. More than one window can be opened on the desktop; the limit to the number of windows open at any one time depends on memory available in the X-Terminal (refer to Description Installation).

WINDOWS
In this software a window (see before) displays an operation (eg.: EM Main Menu). A pull-down menu is available in every window by clicking with the left-hand mouse button on the pointer on the upper left side of the window. The windows can be minimized to an icon, brought to the back and moved on the screen. The windows can overlap each other with a selected window brought to the front of the others. For a more detailed description of the commands and options available in the command part of the window refer to the Unix Documentation.

Check Buttons: A square box is a check button. It represents an option that can be set on or off. A darker color appears in the box when the option is on. Several check boxes that perform associated functions appear as a list. Unlike radio buttons, you can choose more than one check box. Radio Buttons: Options indicated by a series of rhombuses, one of which is darken, are radio buttons. Use these when you must choose one and only one option from a group of options; choosing one of the options automatically deselects the one that was previously selected. Option Buttons: A Option Button is a rectangle with a pointing button on its right. If you select this control, a pop-up similar to a menu appears. It displays a list of values available for the selection.

After you choose one option from the pop-up, the pop-up disappears so it does not get in your way, and the value you choose appears within the control. Push Buttons: In a dialog box, a rectangle with the text in it is a push button. Clicking on the push button you can initiate an action. There are push buttons which are included in most dialog boxes:
OK/Apply Cancel Exit/Close Repeat Help It initiates the action as specified. It lets you leave the dialog box without initiating it. It is similar to Cancel but only closes the dialog box. It repeats the last operation. It calls an help dialog box.

Scrollable Lists: A scrollable list is a boxed list with a scroll bar on its right (only when needed). A scroll bar is a vertical bar with an arrow at the top, an arrow at the bottom, and a scroll box somewhere in between to show where in the list the cursor is. When it is activated you can move the elements of the list and make your selection. If an element is selected it is highlighted. A scrollable list can contain only text (typically in the reports) in that case no selection are needed. Text Boxes: A square box empty or with text inside is a text box. you can type text into it, or you can have EM display text resulting from your choices. Spinners: A spinner is a control made up of an upward-and-downward pointing arrow, displayed next to a text that contains a number. You can increase the number by clicking the up arrow of the spinner or decrease the number by clicking the down arrow until the text displays the number you want.

A pull-down menu is at the top of the screen and contains a group of main options (menu bar). Each of the words written in the menu bar is called a menu pad. As you will see, when you select one of the menu pads, a pull-down menu appears, containing a group of choices called menu options. An arrow indicates that pull-down menu option have sub-options. To make a selection from a pull-down menu: Click with the left-hand mouse button the menu pad to make the menu appear, and then click (lefthand button) the option you want on the menu. If sub-options are available click (left-hand button) with mouse until the desired option is reached and then click again the mouse to initiate the action.

Messages
Messages are prompted in two ways: in a message box which appears on the screen, or in a line at the bottom of the current window.
Message box

The message box is divided into two parts. The upper part contains information about the current action (TEXT AREA), in the lower part is available the command button Close to close the message box.

LOGIN USING THE CONSOLE (HP VERSION)

* Type your account name in the login prompt. * After the User creation both as Unix and as EM User the user environment is automatically created. HP desktop is displayed (CDE). * Click on the EM launcher (available on the icon bar). EM Main Menu is displayed.

How to start the EM from a workstation not included in the installation

It is possible to run EM also from any workstation, not included in the EM installation. The EM launcher, icon in the VUE desktop, has been enhanced with the remote access facility that allows to run the management center on one of the EM hosts, selected from a list.Requirements: The EM remote account name must be equivalent to your local account name. That means that the workstation has to be known by the EM server by means of the /etc/hosts.equiv file and the username in the workstation has to be the same as the EM one. In order to allow contemporary accesses from the same workstation to more than one EM host at once, you have to create the /etc/MV36.equiv file in each workstation and fill it with the name of the hosts where EM has been installed. If the /etc/MV36.equiv file doesnt exist or it exists empty or it contains as unique entry the local hostname the EM is run locally. If the /etc/MV36.equiv file contains as unique entry an hostname different from the local one the EM is run remotely. If the /etc/MV36.equiv file contains more than one row, the EM hosts menu is displayed waiting for the user selection. Installation guide, in any workstation:

EM REMOTE LOGIN INTERFACE

The EM Remote Login Interface relies on standard UNIX services to access the EM interface or a meaningful part of it, such as the Fault RTM, and its NEs. When a remote login session is required from an User, the EM Remote Login Interface will execute a function on the EM itself. The following information will be sufficient to determine the appropriate action to be taken.

Emrlogin Interface Executable

The EM Remote Login Interface executable image, emrlogin, is expected to exist in:
$NCSPATH/emrlogin

on the EM or anywhere if the EM is not installed. A number of parameters must be accepted by emrlogin. They may occur in any order and may or may not exist in the command issued by NM. Default values are indicated when necessary. n -e element-type The type of device login requested. May be one of: ec - login session to the EM ne - login session to the network element n -u user-id A string of up to 8 alpha-numeric characters indicating the name of the EM user attempting to start the requested interface. n -i ne-id A numeric value representing the network element or multiplexing device to login to. Used for network element login sessions.

NOTICE

About the 24 hour performance measurement, take into account the following points: If the monitoring state (on the NE) has been started more than one day before the scheduling time, the first complete sample will be available starting from the midnight of the scheduling day. If the monitoring state (on the NE) has been started less than one day before the scheduling time, the first complete sample will be available starting from the midnight of the day after the scheduling one.

The START TIME is the exact time the EM queries the quality information from the NE. The START TIME can be chosen from all the fifteen minutes gaps of the day except for the one starting from 00:00, because of the unavailability of the NE performance registers that periodically occurs at 00:00. In order not to overload the network connection, a careful distribution of the performance job over the day is suggested. According to the monitoring state, the query time (START TIME) can be selected between midnight and the time the quality sample needs to be available on the EM database. * Press Apply. The planned session remains in the WAIT state till the start time and then it gets the EXE state . SERVICEON OPTICAL ELEMENT MANAGER - OPERATOR'S HANDBOOK QUALITY GRAPHIC REPORT

QUALITY GRAPHIC REPORT

This topic describes how to use a quality chart resulting after a request of port performance data. Next explanation has to be considered as an example since different types of charts can be obtained. Both a histogram and a new Plot Graph are available. The Plot Graph allows to analyse the temporal evolution of a particular performance parameter. The values of G826 parameters and the time the data have been collected are indicated on the vertical and horizontal axis, respectively. The quality thresholds are represented by means of black horizontal lines on the graphic bars.1

To display the value of a specific sample:

* Click on the graphic bar. The relevant value appears at the top of the window.

or
Click in correspondence of a time interval. The following message can be displayed in the field notes:
Compliance..... Indicates that a trouble occurred during the measurement (e.g. Compliance: communication interrupted). Missing Record Indicates that no data were collected for that time interval (the graphic bar is grey).

To move the chart (left/right and up/down):

Use the two scrollbars to move the chart.

To resize the chart:

Use the two lenses from the command area to increase or decrease the chart. In the command area there is also a section dedicated to the selection of desired graphic (Graph Type). With the button "bar" and "plot" is possible to select the desired representation. This area also contains a legenda for graphics, which distinguishes performance parameters by means of different colours. If active mode is bar graph this function does not permit to select different coloured areas; if active mode is Plot Graph it is possible to define which colours (and so which performance parameters) the user wants to visualise.
