INTRODUCTION
CONVENTIONS USED IN THIS HANDBOOK
A star (*) followed by text indicates an action that must be performed by the Operator. For example: * Select option PRINT. Indicates that you have to select the option PRINT on the menu displayed. If a reference to other topic(s) of the operators Handbook is necessary while describing a topic; the following method has been used. See Also: <Topic> If the reference is to a topic described in other manual(s) or description(s); the following method has been used. Refer To: <Handbook/description> Within the attached NE Management description, the symbol [LC] indicates that the relevant option is available only for the Control Application and it can not be managed by the Network Management Centre.
Introduction describes the content of the Operators Handbook and the conventions used. Users Interface contains the basic information about the graphic environment (windows, controls, icons, etc.). Menu Structure gives the flow of the different menus beginning from the EM Main Menu.
Section 2 Starting the EM has two Chapters:
Login describes the Users login. EM Main Menu describes the option available in the Main Menu and how to call up the secondary menus (System Administration, EM Management).
Section 3 System Administration has two Chapters:
System Management in this Section is described the Backup/Recovery procedures of the EM database. User Configuration Handler (UCH) describes mainly how to manage Users for EM, assigning them the relative access rights.
Section 4 NE Management has two Chapters:
NE Management, describes the management of the regions, configuration & alarm reports, alarm monitoring, alarm acknowledgment, how to define Domains for partitioning the network, NE software downloading, displaying the performance data reports.

USER'S INTERFACE
USER'S CONSOLE
The EM ServiceOn Optical Element Manager Software can run on an X-Terminal or on the Console of the computer (if it is equipped with high resolution monitor). The X-Terminal is a graphic terminal which is connected to the EM Network Server by means of an ethernet LAN (Refer to Description Installation for more details). The X-Terminal consists of the following parts: n Color monitor n Base Unit containing the digital electronics printed-circuit assembly and the Ethernet module n Keyboard n Mouse
THE EM DESKTOP
The HP-UX CDE/VUE forms the ServiceOn Optical Element Manager working area. The organization of the facilities offered by the desktop can be divided into two basic "objects": Windows and Icons. The HP Desktop is available when EM is run directly on the console of the HP Workstation. Following is shown an example of configuration of the HP tool bar, where are available some general purpose commands and the EM icon (on the left side of the tool bar). It is however possible to configure the CDE/VUE in a different way (Refer to the HP-UX Documentation). Each operation opens a window in the desktop displaying the data relative to the operation. The desktop itself can be considered as the basic window of the EM. More than one window can be opened on the desktop; the limit to the number of windows open at any one time depends on memory available in the X-Terminal (refer to Description Installation).

WINDOWS
In this software a window (see before) displays an operation (eg.: EM Main Menu). A pull-down menu is available in every window by clicking with the left-hand mouse button on the pointer on the upper left side of the window. The windows can be minimized to an icon, brought to the back and moved on the screen. The windows can overlap each other with a selected window brought to the front of the others. For a more detailed description of the commands and options available in the command part of the window refer to the Unix Documentation.

Check Buttons: A square box is a check button. It represents an option that can be set on or off. A darker color appears in the box when the option is on. Several check boxes that perform associated functions appear as a list. Unlike radio buttons, you can choose more than one check box. Radio Buttons: Options indicated by a series of rhombuses, one of which is darken, are radio buttons. Use these when you must choose one and only one option from a group of options; choosing one of the options automatically deselects the one that was previously selected. Option Buttons: A Option Button is a rectangle with a pointing button on its right. If you select this control, a pop-up similar to a menu appears. It displays a list of values available for the selection.

After you choose one option from the pop-up, the pop-up disappears so it does not get in your way, and the value you choose appears within the control. Push Buttons: In a dialog box, a rectangle with the text in it is a push button. Clicking on the push button you can initiate an action. There are push buttons which are included in most dialog boxes:
OK/Apply Cancel Exit/Close Repeat Help It initiates the action as specified. It lets you leave the dialog box without initiating it. It is similar to Cancel but only closes the dialog box. It repeats the last operation. It calls an help dialog box.
Scrollable Lists: A scrollable list is a boxed list with a scroll bar on its right (only when needed). A scroll bar is a vertical bar with an arrow at the top, an arrow at the bottom, and a scroll box somewhere in between to show where in the list the cursor is. When it is activated you can move the elements of the list and make your selection. If an element is selected it is highlighted. A scrollable list can contain only text (typically in the reports) in that case no selection are needed. Text Boxes: A square box empty or with text inside is a text box. you can type text into it, or you can have EM display text resulting from your choices. Spinners: A spinner is a control made up of an upward-and-downward pointing arrow, displayed next to a text that contains a number. You can increase the number by clicking the up arrow of the spinner or decrease the number by clicking the down arrow until the text displays the number you want.

Menus
Pull-down Menus
A pull-down menu is at the top of the screen and contains a group of main options (menu bar). Each of the words written in the menu bar is called a menu pad. As you will see, when you select one of the menu pads, a pull-down menu appears, containing a group of choices called menu options. An arrow indicates that pull-down menu option have sub-options. To make a selection from a pull-down menu: Click with the left-hand mouse button the menu pad to make the menu appear, and then click (lefthand button) the option you want on the menu. If sub-options are available click (left-hand button) with mouse until the desired option is reached and then click again the mouse to initiate the action.
Messages
Messages are prompted in two ways: in a message box which appears on the screen, or in a line at the bottom of the current window.
Message box
The message box is divided into two parts. The upper part contains information about the current action (TEXT AREA), in the lower part is available the command button Close to close the message box.

NOTICE
About the 24 hour performance measurement, take into account the following points: If the monitoring state (on the NE) has been started more than one day before the scheduling time, the first complete sample will be available starting from the midnight of the scheduling day. If the monitoring state (on the NE) has been started less than one day before the scheduling time, the first complete sample will be available starting from the midnight of the day after the scheduling one.
The START TIME is the exact time the EM queries the quality information from the NE. The START TIME can be chosen from all the fifteen minutes gaps of the day except for the one starting from 00:00, because of the unavailability of the NE performance registers that periodically occurs at 00:00. In order not to overload the network connection, a careful distribution of the performance job over the day is suggested. According to the monitoring state, the query time (START TIME) can be selected between midnight and the time the quality sample needs to be available on the EM database. * Press Apply. The planned session remains in the WAIT state till the start time and then it gets the EXE state .
