I. SCOPE OF DOCUMENT This document defines technical requirements and procedures for materials supplied to G.Canale & C. s.r.

l, and establish a basis in what concerns the final product.

II.

BASIC DEFINITIONS

Digital Documents (in short-documents) documents in electronic format containing the layout to be printed. Film Documents (in short-films) documents supplied on film, containing the layout to be printed. Dummy a laser (or inkjet) printed sample of the final product, supplied by the customer. Ozalid a laser (or inkjet) printed sample made from the customers documents, after the RIP interpreting; this ozalid is intended for conformity check against the dummy, and it must have the customers signed approval. WebApproval a method of approval from distance, intended to replace the ozalid approval in some cases. It is not as precise and complete as approving on the ozalid, but its faster and convenient. Contract proof a hard copy of the document to be printed, faithfully simulating the color appearance of the final product; it can be obtained by any general recognized proof technology, like analog Cromalin, digital Cromalin, etc. For considering such a hard copy as a contract proof, it has to be certified. Certified proof a proof with attached (label printed) results about the differences between the measured values from the proofs color scale and the target values defined by the ICC profile used, according to the printing process needed (web or sheet printing). Proof certification need to be made by the proof supplier and it have to contain the difference E mentioned above and the ISO standard which it complies with. The proof must also contain the color scale used for certifying (preferably FOGRA Media Wedge).

MATERIAL DELIVERY

1. Electronic files a. Digital documents may be delivered via internet on our ftp server. Login details are made available by the Customer Service Representative. We strongly recommend to use a ftp client application (like Cute ftp, Fetch, etc.), with connection set as passive or active, binary transfers. You may also connect via web browser (like Internet Explorer, Safari). In this case you should use an address like: ftp://user@ftp.canale-bucarest.ro b. Digital documents may also be delivered on following media: CD, DVD, Flash USB Memory, USB/Firewire external HDD

c. Each internet delivery must be noticed in writing by mail at your Customer Service Representative and in CC at our prepress department prepress@canale-bucarest.ro. This email serves as an official delivery - check-in document. After receiving this email we can start working on the received materials. Any further transfer of new/modified documents should also be noticed by email in order to be taken into consideration. d. Each delivery on hard media will be checked-in by writing down the date/time and name of the courier. e. Under no circumstances should the Printing House download files from other ftp sites, neither from emails. Do not ask for exceptions, as the outgoing ftp and internet connections are restricted from our firewalls. 2. Films a. Sould the films be sent to our address with ATTN: to your Customer representative, or to PREPRESS DEPT. b. The films should be packed in good conditions, to avoid exposing to sun, moist, dust and to avoid bending or twisting. The best method is to place them on a flat surface, in plastic bag and paper box. On the exterior should be attached firmly the note with the address and attn: field. c. The courier should assure he is delivering the package to the right person, by signature. In case of misunderstandings, we may ask the customer for this signature. 3. Dummy a. A printout, which has been folded and stapled or otherwise fastened, similar to the intended final result (incl. covers, inserts, etc.), is required for visual checking of digital originals and impositions; b. In the case of booklets and similar publications, the possibility of erroneous folding should be excluded. c. If the submission of a printout is impossible and the publication contains unnumbered pages, it is mandatory to submit a layout plan or dummy describing the content of pages in order to enable checking the sequence of pages. d. The pages in the dummy have to be put together in the same order as in the final product and safely secured in place. All pages of the dummy have to be numbered (the numbers can be written by hand). e. The printer reserves the right to mark the dummy to prevent mixing it up with other print job mock-ups. f. If the supplied data do not match with the dummy, we adhere to the files content. 4. Contract proofs a. Digital proofs must comply with ISO 12647-2 standard. b. Choose the reference profile with respect to the print material particularly these: ISOcoated(_V2) - sheet fed offset printing on gloss or matt coated paper ISOuncoated - offset printing on uncoated white paper ISOwebcoated - web offset printing on LWC paper SC_paper - web offset printing on SC paper In case the digital proof does not match, the print job will be done according to ISO 12647-2 standard, or following our own proofs.

c. Contract proofs should be made after the last corrections made on the files. d. Title, file name, date and time and ICC profile should be included on the contract proof. Also the control strip, together with the proof certification, have to be included. e. It is important to consider the effects of ageing and metamerism. Printouts should be given 1-2h to stabilize and should thereafter be protected from light during storage and transportation. f. Digital proofs should be observed in natural daylight or under lighting with uniform spectral distribution and white temperature of ca 5000K (for example Philips TLD 950 and Osram 12-950 tubes). g. Prints from previous editions, as well as any other kind of hard copy without certification are not contract proofs; these may serve as a reference for printing, but there is the possibility (and the risk) to obtain different colors on the respective page, as well as in the other pages from the same sheet, due to the fact that the press is forced to run without following the standard. h. If the customer is not providing contract proofs, the print is made following the ISO 12647-2 standard (according to the color, dot gain and paper type).

IV.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

1. Files a. Data file format: a.1- Post Script level 2 , 3 (.eps, .ps, .prn) both composite and separated. a.2- PDF version 1.3 and higher is the recommended format. Composit, CMYK+spot (only if needed), all fonts included, PS level 2, Binary, without compressions in the original document (e.g. LZW). Also the bicubic downsample to 300 dpi may be used and automatic jpeg compression with maximum quality. The jpeg compression quality is in the customer's responsibility. Another recommended format is PDF/X-3 which is special designed for printing. a.3- TIFF files, CMYK, 8-Bit (clean tiffs, without any of these: alpha channels, clipping paths, masks, layers or multiple page tiffs). a.4- EPS in CMYK color space, fonts converted to curves, spot colors converted to CMYK if not needed. a.5- It is possible to use Adobe PS Printer Driver, and Acrobat Distiller as PPD file to create a correct PS file from graphic applications. Both can be downloaded from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads. Use Acrobat Distiller to transform a PS file to a PDF (Portable Document Format) file. The setting for Distiller can be found on your ftp account from our servers. Also you can use the export as pdf or print to Adobe pdf from within the application. On your ftp account from our servers youll find the settings for creating pdf documents from the most used applications at the moment, as well as other useful info. a.6- We do not process other kind of documents, except the ones listed above.

b. Data file characteristics b.1 File issues The file name should refer to the name of the job and page number/numbers, like mymagazine_003-008.pdf, without romanian diacritics and special characters. Also the pdf should not have more or less pages that indicate its name (for the above ex. should be exactly 6 pages in the pdf). Please be aware that all processing is automatic, any document that does not conform will produce wrong results, or even it cannot be processed. In any case it will need to be resubmitted in a correct form. We recommend to hand the pages over separately (each in its own file). Due to different requirements of various operating systems and FTP, the file names may contain only numbers, characters from a to z, underline character (_), minus sign (-), dot (.) When sending new or corrected files, use the same names as the originals with a distinct indication (ex: 001_new.ps, 002_bun.pdf etc.) Maximum nr. of characters recommended for compatibility is 27 and the maximum file size is up to 1,9 G (Windows system limit) b.2 Multiple pages pdfs Depending on the nature and workflow of each particular job, a PDF could contain one or several pages. These pages needs to be consecutive. We cannot process pdfs with pages that are not consecutive (ex. a single pdf with pages 5,7,8,10). Such a pdf should be made as two (or more) pdfs, each one with consecutive, independent pages (not spreads). Or there may be a single pdf for each page (recommended). Pdfs are automatically interpreted by the rip, the only control for the page sequence is at the end, with the ozalid (or Webapproval), so please be aware that any mistake means extra-time. b.3 Covers The best way to prepare covers is to make them the same way as the content pages of the publication, i.e., each cover on its own page and separate spine this makes it easier for the printing house to assemble the covers taking into account the thickness of the product. An alternative method would be to prepare the cover design as a whole, i.e., back cover + spine + front cover side by side on one page, and inside front cover + back spine (usually left white for the glue to adhere to paper) + inside back cover on another page. If the front covers are sent already mounted, then also the inside covers should be sent mounted and will have to have the following horizontal dimensions: magazine's trim size + spine size + 10 mm symmetric space, from which 5 mm is the bleed and 5 mm for crop marks. However the precise thickness of the spine should be agreed in this case, because it is virtually impossible to change it in the printing house; it varies with the paper thickness, total pages, inserts, finishing, and its supplied to you by your Customer representative. The names of the cover files should follow the general practice, i.e., front cover is no 1, inside front cover is 2, inside back cover is 3 and back cover is 4 (naturally, they could all be included in one file in the order: 1,2,3,4). The design of the spine, if the covers are not sent mounted, should be in a separate file due to different format. b.4 - Changing the black plate Publications printed in several languages often limit changing elements to black color so after the printrun for one language only the black plate is changed on the printing press. This enables significant savings with regard to plates, printing press time, etc. For such jobs, originals must include one file with all color elements (design, images, etc,) and additional files with black text for each language. You should use layers in order to implement this in a design and layout application and export the texts files separate from the images' file; or you can use in the same file the text as Pantone color (fifth color). The recommended way is to send a CMYK file with the images and 2 B/W (black and white) files for the black text:

first text file for the first language and the second text file for the second language. Under no circumstance should you send a unique file with both elements inside: images as CMYK and text as black, because this text will not be possible to separate from the images black. If the file comes in this way for a language, the file for the second language must come in the same way (CMYK + black text) and the CMYK elements (images) should have the exactly same position as in the file for the first language; of course, at the press will be sent just the black for the second language. Pay attention to not have white text over the images or over colored graphics, or colored text for one of the languages, as this means changing also the CMY plates. c. Colors and images c.1 Color spaces To print direct colors, use the correct color (working) spaces CMYK, Grayscale, Black&White or Pantone. Other spaces like RGB, Lab or ICC Based cannot be used, they have to be transformed to a correct color space. For documents with other color spaces than CMYK we ask the customer to convert and submit them again. c.2 Spot colors Spot color usage must be agreed before with the printing company. Label spot colors properly (e.g. PANTONE 287C) and hand them over along with the base CMYK separations in the same data file. Pay attention on black overprint over the spot colors. The Black text trap should be set to knockout the spot color, otherwise the pantone will cover the black (as the black is the first color to print and the spot is the last to print on the press). Also the black text should have a thin, also black outline overprint, to ensure the correct trap. For documents with spot colors not agreed before, they are automatically converted to CMYK. Usually the brand colors have been defined with PANTONE color codes, which refer to the formulas of the respective color ink mixtures. It is important to remember that one and the same ink mixture could produce significantly varying results when printed on different papers. It should also be kept in mind that many PANTONE spot colors cannot be implemented in a four-color process and the equivalents found on the computer or color guide may not produce the desired result. c.3 - Black and overprint During RIP process, the document's Black objects trap settings are preserved. If black overprint is not desired, non-overprinting black should be used (see below), special written agreement is required for cases when custom overprint has been used for design purposes, or if you want special overprint policy to be used by the printing company. We may use custom black overprint policy if requested by customer, like this: all black overprint, or all black knockout. For this we should be informed via email at your contact person and in CC at prepress@canale-bucarest.ro. In order to avoid visible effects of misregistration in the case of black text, lines or smaller objects on a colored background, overprint should be specified to all such black (100% K) objects. All such small objects and text MUST be Black only. In the case of black objects for which overprint is not recommended (ex: large surfaces with an image or color underneath), black without overprint should be used: regular black with knockout trap set from within the client's application: 100%K rich black: 100K-50C or 100K-50C-40M black without overprint: 100K-1C-1M-1Y rich black without overprint: 100K-50C-40M-1Y

c.4 Colors and overprint Another common problem with overprint is accidental addition of overprint to white or colored objects, resulting in the disappearance of text or change of color. In order to avoid this problem it is recommended to remove overprint from all non-black objects during preflight. If trapping or overprint of non-black objects has been used in the project or if there are other special requirements with regard to the application of overprint, you should inform our prepress department about them in each particular case and agree on special workflow. c.5 Color separation and profiles Color separation can be defined as the transformation of the RGB color system used by a scanner, digital camera or other input device into a color system suitable for the printing equipment, usually CMYK for four-color printing. Color separation is often mistakenly understood as the creation of printing films or plates: in reality, the transformation of the image from RGB to CMYK, i.e., color separation, takes place during image processing in Adobe Photoshop or printout from the layout or graphics application. The software creating the color separation takes into account the known parameters of the printing process (Photoshop settings or ICC profile) and attempts to achieve a result that would be as similar to the original as possible on particular output device. Consequently, it would be good to remember that color separation made for one system may not produce the same result when printed on another system, for example printing a separation made for coated paper on newsprint may cause significant technical problems. Primary parameters for European sheetfed and heatset web offset printing are listed in ISO standard 12647-2:2004, parameters for coldset printing in ISO 12647-3:2004. Based on these, several organizations have produced test prints and ICC profiles that correspond to a typical European printhouse. Latest set of profiles for sheet-fed and heatset printing can be downloaded from European Color Initiative web www.eci.org (ISOcoated, ISOuncoated, ISOwebcoated), for newspaper printing from Ifra web www.ifra.com (ISOnewspaper26v4). Suitable profiles for sheet-fed printing on coated (Euroscale Coated v2) and uncoated paper (Euroscale Uncoated v2) are also included with all Adobe products. While using these typical profiles it must be understood, that following standards is not mandatory for printers and even following standards can result in visible differences in color. If you feel unsure, please ask before sending a new publication for the technical details about the color settings - profiles, dot gain, total ink as these depends on the paper and machine used for printing. This are recommended colour setting: Euroscale Coated v2 (ISO coated v2 is newer)- FOGRA 39 - sheet coated paper Euroscale Uncoated (ISO uncoated is newer)- FOGRA 29 - sheet uncoated paper ISO Webcoated - FOGRA 28 - web LWC paper ISO SC - FOGRA 40 - web SC paper c.6 Monitor adjustments Most of the color and image problems in publications arise from poor imageprocessing and/or Photoshop color separation parameters, which have not been adjusted for the printing process: no attention has been given to actual dot gain, paper type and Euroscale colors; the images only use a part of the color range of the print or have been processed with a significant color shift. Before starting you should also check your monitor calibration and ensure that correct ICC-profiles have been selected in Photoshop. It is important to maintain your monitors calibrated according to the printing process.

Soft-proofing on monitor takes more than just selecting ICC-profile in software according to printing process: you must pay attention to lighting, neutral gray interior, monitor hood and regular calibration. Monitor brightness and white point should be adjusted according to actual printing paper (cca 5000K with correct lighting) while Simulate Ink Black should be turned on in Adobe Photoshop and Indesign (View->Proof Setup menu). c.7 Images quality Image resolution in dpi should be in the range of 1,5 to 2 times the required printing raster in lpi, but 350 dpi maximum. The resolution depends also on the paper used; if you feel unsure, you may ask for these information. Total ink should be like this: - max. 300% for coated paper and 260% for uncoated paper on web printing - max. 320% for coated paper and 280% for uncoated paper on sheet printing c.8 Printing accuracy CTP technology reproduces printing rasters from 2% to 98% inclusive. You should keep in mind that a 3% color may not be visible at printing as 2-3% is the tolerance for the entire printing workflow (plate imaging and press printing). d. Layout d.1 The electronic document files should contain single pages only, not spreads. The only exception are the booklets and mounted covers. d.2 Bleed size is 5mm, symmetric (on all edges) d.3 Crop marks for trim size are needed, with an offset of 5mm d.4 - Pdf page size should be equal with the publication's page size plus extra 10 mm on each side. From these 10 mm, 5 mm will be the bleed and 5 mm are for the crop marks (the crops have to have 5 mm offset, to not enter in the bleed size); ex: for A4 trim size, the pdf page size will be 230x317 mm. d.5 - Pages have to be centered horizontally and vertically in the pdf document, as the imposition software centers the entire pdf document into the trim size, leaving the extra space outside (the 10 mm from each side, mentioned above). d.6 All objects touching the trim format of the publication should continue 3-5mm over the edge in order to prevent white areas from appearing due to shifting during folding, binding, trimming, etc. It is important to consider the need for bleed already when preparing design elements and cropping images, because otherwise something important could be cut. The requirement of bleed also applies for advertising touching the edge of the page. d.7 - Important elements on the page which you dont want to be cut, especially text, should not be located closer than 3-5mm to the edge. Even the smallest errors made in postprocessing are clearly visible, when lines parallel to edges are used. Exceptions are newspapers and other publications, which are not trimmed after printing and for which the margin should be at least 10mm from the paper edge. d.8 Rich black In order to obtain a consistent black on large areas, rich black should be used which is made from 2 or 3 colors, like this: 100K-50C or 100K-50C-40M d.9 - White text on black background The designs often use rich black with other process colors added to black, because 100% K black may appear too light when printed on a large area. When a white text is printed on such background (or on a dark picture or colored background), even the slightest

registration problem may render the text unreadable. In the case of serif, italic or thin fonts the accepted minimum size is 10pt, and in the case of non-serif fonts it is 8pt. When using rich black, it should be composed of 100K50C or 100K50C40M both options ensure almost maximum darkness (density) achievable in the printing process. d.10 Minimum type size for one color font is 5pt. Minimum type size for more than 1 color fonts, or in negative, is 8pt for sans serif fonts, 10 pt for serif fonts. For this minimum size is also highly recommended to use a bold style font. d.11- Minimum line thickness in one color is 0,2 pt. Lines made in negative, or in more than one color should have at least 0,75mm. d.12- Black texts smaller than 24pt. must be overprinted. Over 24pt. it may be made from rich black, for more consistency; see above. d.13 Perfect bind publications In the case of perfect binding, the gutter of the publication will contain 6-8 mm blind area, which should be taken into account during design (inside margins) and especially when creating images and design elements, which should run from one page to another. The minimum distance for text and graphics from the spine is about 8mm. This should be considered also for covers. The easiest solution would be to make sure that the transition area contains only such objects on which cutting a few millimeters would not disturb the image: for example, grass or forest would not be a problem, while human face or slanted lines, or big titles would be. An alternative, which is often used, would be to create for the image an overlap in the required amount, i.e., about 5 mm of the image on the left page will be repeated on the right page. In the case of booklets, the design should take into account and the printing house should be consulted on creep (or shifting of pages): innermost pages are a few mm narrower. When there are no images, which run from one page to another, the printing house will be able to compensate for this by shifting the pages in the center towards the inside; an alternative would be a design, which takes into account the disappearance of a few mm from the outer edge of the page. d.14 In-line gluing In this case the elements near the spine should have a minimum of 6mm from the edge (spine), because aprox. 2-3mm will be glued. d.15 - Die cutting, varnishing etc The drawings required for die cutting, varnishing, embossing and other post-processing operations should be realized in vector format (Adobe Illustrator, Illustrator EPS, PDF) on top of the design using a SPOT (Pantone) color with a respective name (e.g., Varnish, Emboss); all objects should have overprint. The thickness of the line should be cca 0.4 mm; the cutting knife should be indicated by a continuous line and the scoring by a dotted line. The boundingbox of the product should be indicated by trim marks.

E. PAGE GEOMETRY

The distance of the printing marks (offset) from the trim size format should not be less than 3 mm. Safety zone - it is necessary to maintain the distance of objects, especially that of the text (unless it is graphic design), from the trim size format of 3 mm. Identical bleed of 3-5 mm is to be set at all document sides.

3-5 mm

3 mm

COVER SPREADS If you have a perfect bound magazine, for covers which have spread advs. on cover 2 passing to page 3 or on last page passing to cover 3 (or even for the internal spreads), you have to take into account that about 4 mm at the spine will be lost as these 4 mm are glued and the image will not be visible. For dealing with this kind of finishing, the image from the left page should be shifted 4 mm toward left and the image from the right page 4 mm toward right. All the other elements (text columns, page numbers, etc) have to remain into position, as these should keep the same place in all the pages. ARRANGEMENT OF PAGES FOR SADDLE STITCHING BINDING (greater number of pages) In case of greater number of pages for Saddle it is necessary to expect gradual decreasing in the width of the pages caused by an increase (growth) in the spine thickness (see the Figure on the right). This decrease depends on the type of paper used (g/m2) and number of pages, and should already be taken into account for printed products with more than cca 64 pages. The extent of the compensation for the page decreasing should always be consulted with the technology workers. This compensation can also be set in the workflow but no objects (pictures, texts) continuing from even pages to odd pages can be used, otherwise these would be partially lost during automatic insertion of the pages into the binding joint. ARRANGEMENT OF PAGES FOR PERFECT BOUND BINDING If with V2 binding a continuation page from the cover to the block of the same printed product is used, it is necessary to expect decreasing of the second side of the cover and first page of the block by 4 mm from the spine. In this place the block is glued to the spine of the cover. The situation is similar with the last page of the block and the third page of the cover. Should a motif continue from the second page of the cover to the first page of the block or from the last page of the block to the third page of the cover, it is necessary to arrange the continuation page according to the example layout shown on the following page.

e. Conformity and contact e.1 - We need a test file before sending all the material, to check the parameters. Please ask your contact person about the details. Should you have any questions or do not feel sure about the creation of PS, PDF or postage of documents to be printed, do not hesitate to contact us. Pay attention in the way the documents are made, because any extra work may be charged and also this means extra time and delays in the agreed delivery time. e.2 Before sending the material to the printing house is highly recommended to visually check the files carefully for possible errors (colors, graphic elements position, bleed size, trim size, page number, correspondence between file name and pages contained, page sequence inside the pdf). Also check carefully with a preflight software like Acrobat Professional 6,7,8 for RGB elements, unwanted spot colors, text color (including black text) and overprints. Please make these checking carefully, because any of these problems spotted at printing house will come in to ask you to re-submit the affected files with the problems solved. If some problems are not spotted, they may appear on the printed material. e.3 The delivery date of digital materials should be considered the date when final materials arrives, not requiring any more corrections. e.4 Delaying in supplying the digital materials from the agreed timing, may cause the delivery delay of the final product, for which the printing company shall not be responsible. e.5 Digital materials as well as any hard copy (CD, DVD, dummy, color proofs, etc.) are kept at printing house a maximum of 2-3 months for the periodic and occasionally publications. For books, may be considered a maximum of 2 years for keeping the electronic documents. After these periods of time all the materials will be discarded. If you know you will need back the material, please make sure to ask for it to be sent back to you together with the printed publication, before the timings from above expires. e.6 - The printing house has the right to refuse from accepting materials whichdo not comply with the technical specifications. The printing house reserves the right to make necessary modifications in received files for the purposes of ensuring the print quality. The customer shall pay for the expenses incurred due to modification of the submitted materials which do not comply with the technical specification, or due to the time lost with materials which does not comply with the technical specifications. Any delay in execution due to the non-compliance of the materials shall be in the customer's responsibility. e.7 The only way to keep in contact is through your Customer Representative. If you feel unsure or have any questions concerning your publication, do not hesitate to contact him. We do not encourage keeping contact directly with other departments, especially with the Prepress Department by any means, including direct phone calls, fax, sms or chat sessions. The only recommended communication is in writing, by emails, and are accepted in urgent situations regarding technical problems, when your customer representative is not available. These emails must have in CC your Customer representative. Also is not permitted the access inside the company without your Customer Representative, nor the access to the workstations or other technical equipment.
