Project RED: Revolutionizing Education

Driving Learning Improvements and Cost Savings with Technology

The Project RED research study identied and examined the technology implementation strategies required to reliably produce signicant academic improvement, researched the potentially positive nancial impact of technology in schools, and developed guidelines for educational institutions. The study tested two hypotheses: Properly implemented education technology can substantially improve student achievement. Properly implemented education technology can be revenue-positive at the state level. Project RED breaks new groundboth in the scope of the study and in the number of variables examined. Unprecedented Scope Project RED surveyed almost 1,000 schools across a broad cross-section of US institutions. Eleven education success measures were examined, along with 136 independent variables in 22 categories. Results were correlated to dierent student computer ratios (1:1, 2:1, etc.) and comprehensive demographic data was correlated to survey results. The survey was augmented by interviews and additional information provided by school and district administrators. Eleven Education Success Measures Test scores are only one way to measure the eectiveness of education technology. Project RED used test scores as well as ten others such as disciplinary action reduction, drop-out rate reduction and paperwork reduction to represent and measure academic success and nancial impact.

136 Independent Variables Independent variables included types of devices, school usage patterns, funding sources, technology plan quality, sustainability, and principals leadership role. Key Findings Project RED identied many hitherto unknown factors that contribute to the following key ndings. The report provides detailed analyses of the ndings and recommendations for schools technology planning moving forward. 1. 1:1 works when properly implemented. 2. Schools are facing a technology implementation crisis. 3. Technology is an investment not an expense 4. Leadership and vision are essential components. 5. Technology-infused intervention classes lead the way. 6. Collaboration and social media are important. 7. Frequency of technology use is a key factor. Summary Project RED is the rst survey to identify and prioritize the variables that make some technology implementations perform dramatically better than others and demonstrate how and why a 1:1 student computer ratio is more eective than a 2:1 or higher ratio.
