1.4.1.

General functional description

Area of use

The system is portable and suitable for use in the field. It is used for the precise pinpointing of flashover faults in cables.

1.4.2.

Basic working method

The system, which consists of a T16/910 measurement receiver, a T16/940 sensor, including accessories, and T16/960 headphones is intended to perform "Acoustic pinpointing by the search pulse method". The system has facilities for two measuring procedures, coincidence measurement and relative distance measurement.

1.4.2.1.

Acoustic pinpointing by the search pulse method

A surge pulse generator is used at the start of the cable to feed voltage pulses into the defective wire, producing flashovers (arcing) at the fault point. The resulting flashover noise propagates through the ground and can be detected at the surface using a seismic sensor. The criterion for the fault location is the greatest loudness of the flashover noise or, in the case of distance measurement, the smallest propagation time difference (see section 1.4.2.3). In general, the interference signals which occur owing to environmental influences are large in comparison with the levels of flashover noise to be expected, which means that aids are used to recognize the noise. One simple option is a connectable high- pass filter to suppress lowfrequency interference quantities (e.g. traffic noise). The useful quantities and interference quantities are often in the same frequency range, however, so another aid is used. This is the coincidence measuring method. The system is equipped with all the aforementioned aids.
18 MAN_digiphone_eng_02.doc

1.4.2.2.

Coincidence measurement

In this measuring procedure the magnetic field generated by the search pulse is evaluated together with the flashover noise. The appearance of the magnetic signal is displayed optically, making it possible for the user to correlate it with the appearance of the flash-over noise on the headphones. The "simultaneity" (= coincidence) helps to separate the flashover noise from the interference noise.

1.4.2.3.

Distance measurement

A better criterion for the fault location is the minimum propagation time difference between the magnetic signal and the acoustic flash-over signal. This difference is caused by the different propagation velocities of the two signals in the ground. Measurement of the pro-pagation time difference is largely independent of the amplitude of the useful signal. Measurement can be a problem in surroundings with interference. The magnetic field propagates at approximately the speed of light, while the flashover noise propagates in the ground at approximately the speed of sound in air, depending on the nature of the ground, i.e. considerably slower. The propagation time difference is smallest directly above the fault point. The difference is a relative measurement of the distance from the measuring point to the fault point. That is why this method is called distance measurement. It offers additional reliability in comparison to the criterion of the maximum loudness in the headphones, as maximum loudness cannot be established, or can only be estab-lished in the wrong place, in the case of cables laid in pipes. The use of this measuring method can be a problem in surroundings with interference.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

MAN_digiphone_eng_02.doc

MAN_digiphone_eng_02.doc

21

2. 2.1.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION Functional Description

The functional description refers to the block diagrams in Fig. 2-1 and Fig. 2-2. The T16/910 measurement receiver processes two analog signals supplied by the T16/940 sensor. The acoustic signal is converted into an electric voltage by the seismic pick-up in the sensor. This is amplified and prefiltered in a two-stage charge amplifier. The "acoustic channel" of the T16/910 measurement receiver consists of a two-stage preamplifier with adjustable amplification. A high-pass filter can be connected to suppress interference if so wished. With a power output stage the signal can be monitored with the T16/960 headphones. The output signal of the preamplifier also goes to a trigger circuit, which generates a digital signal for the timing logic and the coincidence display if a threshold value for the acoustic signal level is exceeded. The magnetic signal is detected by means of a ferrite antenna in the sensor and amplified. The "magnetic channel" consists of a two-stage preamplifier with adjustable amplification. After a rectifier circuit the signal goes via a LEVEL adjustment circuit to the bar graph driver circuit, which drives the ten-place bar display on the LCD. The deflection of the bar display is a relative measurement of the amplitude of the magnetic signal. The output signal of the rectifier circuit also goes to a trigger circuit, which generates a digital signal for the timing logic and the coincidence display if a threshold value for the acoustic signal level is exceeded. When battery capacity is being measured, the battery voltage level appears on the bar display instead of the magnetic signal.
22 MAN_digiphone_eng_02.doc

The timing logic measures the time difference between the occurrence of the magnetic trigger signal and the appearance of the acoustic signal, and displays it on a three-place, seven- segment display in a measuring range of 0 to 99.9 ms.

OPERATION

MAN_digiphone_eng_02.doc

27

28

MAN_digiphone_eng_02.doc

3. 3.1.

OPERATION Safety measures

ATTENTION: Pinpointing requires a pulse generator. The pulse generator produces high voltages and its operation requires that certain safety regulations be complied with. For further information read the manual for the pulse generator. When the search pulse method is used on lighting installations, the masts must be protected during measuring owing to the high voltages (shock protection mats, etc.).

The following safety measures must be complied with to avoid personal injury or material damage as a direct result of operation of the system by itself or in combination with other equipment: Check the immediate area surrounding where the system is being used for any unprotected live equipment/plant with which you or the system might unintentionally come into contact. In particular, this applies to high-voltage components ( 25 VAC / 60 VDC) and components with an unknown voltage.
WARNING: Never perform measurements on exposed cables!

Protect such components by fitting insulating covers. If this is not possible for technical reasons, switch such components off or have this done for you for the duration of your work at this site by prior agreement with/with the prior approval of the supervisor responsible. Make sure that this has been done properly (e.g. by making control measurements using a multimeter which you have made sure is working properly: perform control measurement on a known voltage, etc.).

MAN_digiphone_eng_02.doc

29

Make sure that the proper functioning of other equipment/plant is not impaired during measuring with the system. If other equipment/plant has to be modified for operation of the system, make sure that such measures are reversed once the work has been completed. The special requirements of such equipment/plant must be complied with, and only perform work in this connection by prior agreement with/with the prior approval of the supervisor responsible. This is particularly important in the case of interference with existing safety devices.
WARNING: Harmful sound levels may occur on the headphones during monitoring of flashover noise owing to additional airborne sound and the amplification being set too high.

Bar display

The deflection of the bar display is a relative measurement of the magnetic signal amplitude. It provides simplified line tracing (see section 1.4.2.2.). During battery testing it indicates the capacity of the batteries.

3.4.2.2.

Coincidence displays

The coincidence display (7) appears when the magnetic channel is triggered. The coincidence display (14) appears when the magnetic channel is triggered together with the acoustic channel within 1 s.

3.4.2.3.

OVFL display

The OVFL display (6) appears on the LCD when the magnetic signal is triggered followed by an acoustic signal of > 99.9 ms and < 1 s, in which case the 3-place display will not show a measured value. The OVFL display (6) also appears after the system is switched on until the magnetic channel is triggered for the first time.

3.4.2.4.

Distance measurement (time measurement)

A three-place, seven-segment display on the LCD indicates the propagation time difference between the magnetic and acoustic signals in a time window of 0 to 99.9 ms. The displayed value is retained until the magnetic channel is triggered again. The OVFL display (6) also appears after the system is switched on until the magnetic channel is triggered for the first time.

Pinpointing faults with the system

Switching on and operating the system

The numbers after the controls refer to Fig. 3-2.

Plug the T16/940 sensor into the input socket (3) on the T16/910 measurement receiver Plug the T16/960 headphones into the input socket (10) on the T16/910 measurement receiver Switch the system receiver on using the On/Off button (1) on the T16/910 measurement receiver The ON display (15) will appear on the LCD.

3.5.2.

Measuring

Pinpointing is always preceded by pre-location and a line or cable search. For the purposes of the system, high-voltage pulses are supplied at the start of a cable using a pulse generator. These pulses generate flashovers at the fault point. Pre-location is used to determine the section of cable with a fault and to check the occurrence of flashovers. To operate and connect the pulse generator, please refer to the manuals for the unit in question.

3.5.2.1.

Line tracing

The system can be used to perform line tracing of a limited scope in comparison to specialist line tracing equipment.
Place the T16/940 sensor on the ground with the printed arrow pointing along the suspected cable route. Using the Magn. potentiometer (8), set the signal amplification for the magnetic channel in such a way to start with that the coincidence display (7) appears and at least one bar (5) of the field strength display appears at the same time. Seek the maximum deflection by turning the senor slowly around its vertical axis. The arrow will then be pointing parallel to the cable route. Move the sensor at right angles to the route, keeping the arrow pointing parallel to it. The cable route is at the point where the maximum deflection of the bar display occurs. Move the sensor along the route while waving it at right angles to it. The cable route can be followed easily and marked using the maximum deflection of the bar display. The Magn. potentiometer (8) may have to be readjusted.

3.5.2.2.

Precise pinpointing

Place the T16/940 sensor on the ground in such a way that the arrow points along the cable route. Select the appropriate contact attachments from the accessories to ensure optimal sensor contact with the ground, depending on the ground conditions. Use the correct attachments for moving the sensor, as dictated by the wind conditions. See section 3.3.2 in this connection.

Using the Magn. potentiometer (8), adjust the signal amplification for the magnetic pulse until the trigger display (7) appears and the measuring signal is visible on the bar display.

Using the Sound potentiometer (12), adjust the signal amplification for the acoustic channel until noises are clearly audible on the headphones.

WARNING:

Harmful sound levels may occur on the headphones during monitoring of flashover noise owing to additional airborne sound and the amplification being set too high.

Place the T16/940 sensor on the cable route at intervals of approx. 0.5 m to 1 m and monitor ground noises. The flashover noise can be heard in the vicinity of the fault. The coincidence display (7) serves as an indication of the time of the event. Mark the point with the maximum loudness (= suspected fault point).

Using the Sound potentiometer (12), adjust the signal amplification for the acoustic signal until the flashover noises can be heard well and the trigger display (14) appears.

N.B.:

The T16/910 measurement receiver is equipped with a high-pass filter. The high-pass filter can be used to suppress interference signals. The filter is activated with the Filter key (11).

If the coincidence display (7) appears and the acoustic channel is triggered within 99.9 ms of the appearance of the magnetic signal appearing, the time difference value will be indicated on the threeplace, seven-segment display.

If the coincidence display (7) appears and the time difference to the acoustic signal is > 99.9 ms and < 1 s, the OVFL display (6) will appear on the LCD. If no acoustic signal appears within 1 s of the magnetic signal, measurement will be restarted.

As you approach the fault point, the time difference between the magnetic and acoustic signals will become smaller and the value shown on the display will decrease. You should always wait for several propagation time measurements at a measuring point. If the same value appears several times, you can be sure that it is "correct". The smallest value shown on the LCD indicates the fault point.

If the loudest point and the point of the smallest time difference agree, you can be sure that you have found the fault point. Location of the point by distance measurement is to be preferred to measurement by loudness (see 1.4.2.3.) if propagation time measurement fails to indicate a "constant" value over several measurements owing to interference quantities.

3.6.

Malfunctions

In the event of the system malfunctioning, it must be checked by authorized after-sales service unless the fault(s) can be rectified on the basis of the instructions contained in Chapter 5.

3.7.1.

Shutdown
Short-term shutdown

Switch off the T16/910 measurement receiver by pressing the On/Off button (1) again. The ON display (15) will disappear. In the case of shutdown for up to a month, no special measures have to be taken. Only the environmental conditions for storage as stipulated in the specifications have to be complied with.
N.B.: Immediately after it has been switched off, the system can only be switched back on again after a built-in time delay!

3.7.2.

Long-term shutdown

If shutdown in excess of a month is expected, the batteries must be removed from the T16/910 measurement receiver and stored separately.

Storage and transport

Storage

The system should be stored in dry surroundings which offer adequate protection against mechanical damage and dirt.
ATTENTION: The environmental conditions stipulated in the specifications are threshold values, and damage may occur if they are exceeded.

Before using the system again after storage, check the outside for damage and dirt. Pay particular attention to the sockets for the sensor and headphone leads and the battery compartment. A performance check should normally be performed before using the system again after storage. To do this, follow the steps described in Section 3.3., Initial use, then perform a measurement on a suitable object.

3.8.2.

Transport

Only use the case provided for transport. Please comply with the environmental conditions stipulated in the specifications.
ATTENTION: Never use the connecting cable as a "carrying handle".

4.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

The system does not contain any components which require care and maintenance on a regular basis if they are to work properly. Please remove external dirt with a soft, dry cloth or with a soft cloth slightly moistened with mild household cleaner. Please do not use any solvents such as alcohol or naphtha, as they may attack the surface of the housing. The sensor and accessories are subject to particularly harsh operating conditions. Thorough cleaning after each use in the field is therefore to be recommended. As a matter of principle, the foot (Fig. 3-2 [3] and ground plate (Fig. 3-2 [4]) should always be cleaned thoroughly and smeared with a thin coating of non-corrosive silicone grease after use in the field.
ATTENTION: Do not allow moisture to penetrate the sockets for the headphones and sensor of the T16/910 measurement receiver and the battery compartment under any circumstances. The sensor is a sensitive piece of equipment. High mechanical loads such as those which would occur if the sensor were dropped on a hard surface are therefore to be avoided.
