Run for your Health Grade Level: 9-12

Run for Your Health is a Web Quest lesson that allows students to be actively engaged as researchers and producers of genuine technological material and communicative devices. The work is done in teams of four. They search the internet for evidence to support the idea that there is a relationship between physical activities, health and well being. They present this in a final team report. The team creates a fitness training program to get the candidates into shape and running by the end of one month. This activity helps students to learn about the importance of physical fitness and health. They also learn about running, the heart, nutrition, physical fitness, endurance, using calendar software, and training program to promote healthy living.

Activity No 1 - INTRODUCTION TO THE LESSON The teacher will introduce the topic of physical activities and running to find out the interest of students about the subject. The teacher will post all the information on a wikispace or a blog to be connected with students at any time they request for help. A webquest will be created based on this lesson plan in order students can find a guideline and a virtual schedule to perform activities at the appropriate time. LEARNING OBJECTIVES AND COMPETENCIES By the end of the lesson, students will: 1- Be able to design personal fitness programs for others 2- Explain the connection between good health and physical activities 3- Use technological resources such as Bubl us, 280 slides presentations, web quests, chartgo.com, surveymonkey.com and other web- based resources to find and manipulate information. 4 - Use MS Word and a calendar software to create written reports.

Activity No 3 STUDY AND RESEARCH OF THE PROBLEM The teacher and students are going to begin an investigation of why physical activities and running in particular are important to our health and general well being. After students learn about the value of running, students are going to convince their colleagues from other courses of the school to join the runner's club program. Students are responsible to launch a campaign by advertising and designing newsletters and flyers to students of their school persuading them to join the club. Activity No 4 ORGANIZATION AND STRUCTURE OF DATA Students will use MS word, and a calendar fitness training program to write their final written report. Students will also create a positive story presentation promoting running, power eating and benefits of good health using story bird.com or a 280 slides presentation. After that a survey will be administered for all students in school to determine the percentage of students who are interesting in joining the running program and other health and nutrition topics. Students will use survey monkey.com and chartgo.com as web based tools to administrate the survey and the results in graphs at the end of the project. Activity No 5 PRESENTATION Teacher will allow students to give an oral presentation of 30 minutes about importance of running and the benefits to have a good health. Presentation will have as a main purpose to persuade other students to join the running school program. Technology links. Students can create a powerful presentation using storybird.com, 280slides.com or a simple power point presentation.

Activity No 6 EVALUATION OF ASSESSMENT The teacher will have to evaluate students based on the competencies and objectives of the syllabus using a standard rubric. The teacher is responsible to let students knows about the metrics to evaluate in order to guarantee a better evaluation criteria where students can feel more confident of their performance.
