OVERVIEW
The Rochester Area Foundation (www.rochesterarea.org) is a community foundation based in Rochester, Minnesota. The Rochester Area Foundation's genesis started with the vision of the late Harry J. Harwick, chairman of the Mayo Foundation from 1939 to 1958. He suggested that a study group be formed in 1942 to determine whether a community foundation would work in Rochester. In December 1944, the Rochester Community Foundation was born. On Dec. 5 of that year, the Mayo Properties Association, now the Mayo Foundation, transferred an unconditional gift of $3,500 to the newly formed Foundation. Since its founding, the Rochester Area Foundation has provided the opportunity for all people to contribute to the communitys common good and be part of something thats bigger than themselves. Over the past 67 years, thousands of community residents have invested in the Foundation. Because the Foundation only spends the income earned from these investments, the generosity of its earliest donors continue to benefit the community today. Currently, the Rochester Area Foundation has assets of approximately $40 million. The mission of the Rochester Area Foundation is to strengthen community philanthropy by promoting responsible and informed giving and to assist donors in meeting their charitable objectives. The Foundation is dedicated to using its resources to improve the quality of life, promote greater equality of opportunities and to develop effective methods to assist those in need in the greater Rochester area. Rochester Area Foundation meets National Standards for operational quality, donor service and accountability in the community foundation sector. The Foundation offers a variety of charitable funds and trusts to help individuals meet their financial and charitable goals. (please visit http://www.rochesterarea.org/donor-services/funds.html for fund details). Donors receive maximum tax advantages and have access to the Foundations knowledge of the community and nonprofit organizations. Rochester Area Foundation handles the administrative details and provides prompt service and grant support so donors can focus on the more rewarding aspects of giving. In addition to donor services, other major initiatives of the Foundation are described below: First Homes Properties was launched in 1999 as an initiative of the Rochester Area Foundation with the goal of assisting individuals and families in the purchase of homes. From the beginning, First Homes has been organized to provide and develop fast, flexible, responsive leadership to create a permanent, adequate supply of workforce housing in healthy, sustainable neighborhoods through collaborative efforts in the greater Rochester area. http://www.firsthomes.org/ First Steps is a collaborative public-private economic development program being spearheaded by the Rochester Area Foundation to assure that all Rochester students are ready for kindergarten. Since 2006 strategies have included: communicating the economic imperative for early investment, collaborating with community partners to improve the quality of all early care environments and developing reliable measures of quality with the First Steps School Readiness Study. http://www.firststeps.us/

The Community Ventures Fund was established by action of the Board of Trustees of the Rochester Area Foundation at its meeting on December 12, 2005. Investors purchase shares in the Community Ventures Fund, which looks something like a mutual fund, complete with prospectus, share certificates and annual meetings. All proceeds from the purchase of shares in the Fund will be designated as unrestricted assets of the Fund. The endowed Fund will pool contributors gifts and provide "dividends" for the Rochester area in perpetuity. With input from contributors, income will be distributed by Rochester Area Foundation to advance community projects. All shareholders are entitled to have their name affixed to grants made in the community from the Fund.

ROCHESTER, MINNESOTA: Meet the "Best Small City in America" Money Magazine said it best, "One thing to remember about Rochester is that it has the sophistication of a larger metro area, but not the congestion or the complications." Named "Best Small City" in America by the nationally recognized magazine, Rochester merges a cosmopolitan atmosphere with Midwestern hospitality. Since the 1980s, Rochester has frequently made Money magazine's list of the best places to live, ranging from the best overall to the best in the Midwest. Rochester is the state's third-largest city and is located just 90 minutes south of the Minneapolis/St. Paul Metropolitan Area. Nestled in a valley, Rochester's skyline has a foreground of farm fields with tall buildings thrusting into the sky. Despite its cosmopolitan appearance, one of the favorable features marking the city's status as a great place to live is short commute times, an average of 14 minutes and the shortest of the nation's 300 largest cities. Rochester, with a population of more than 100,000, isn't a tiny town. It encompasses nearly 40 square miles and 100 parks - that's nearly three city parks per square mile- and continues to grow. In fact, it is one of the state's fastest-growing municipalities. Minnesota has a reputation as a frozen northern state, but Rochester enjoys an average of 200 sunny days, an average summer high temperature of 84 degrees, and an average winter low of 3 degrees making it the tropical zone of Minnesota. If the weather does take a turn for the worse, the downtown core boasts what is probably the most extensive subwayskyway system for a city of Rochester's size in the nation. Averaging 1.5 million visitors a year, largely attracted to Mayo Clinic for medical care, the city offers an extensive service industry. It also is a regional magnet for shoppers, drawing people from northern Iowa and southwestern Wisconsin. In addition to Mayo Clinic, the city's employers include a variety of high-tech companies, from a major IBM plant on the city's northwestern edge to medium-sized and small-sized producers of computer hardware and software. Agri-business, including a cannery and three dairy processors, is big, all fed by farms in the Rochester area. Arts, culture and entertainment add to the quality of life in Rochester. Rochester supports a Symphony Orchestra and Chorale, Chamber Music Society, Civic Theater, Repertory Theater, Art Center and many other cultural resources. Opportunities to enjoy running, hiking, inline skating, biking or walking throughout Rochester are endless. Rochester also hosts a semi-professional football team, summer collegiate baseball league, as well as many other sports activities. Education is important in Rochester. A fine school system offers quality primary and secondary education for youngsters, as do a number of parochial and private schools. Higher education offerings range from vocational-technical classes to undergraduate and graduate college programs in a number of areas including education, health care, business, and engineering.
